Biography From the years of 1887 to 1915 lived one of the most memorable war poets of the 20th century. Rupert Brooke was raised in an upper class family, and he was educated at Rugby School where his father was the housemaster and later at King's College in Cambridge. He was remembered as the bright student/athlete who was quickly accepted amongst the most prominent literary circles including Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf, and Edward Thomas. Brooke soon gained a literary reputation despite his youth and naivete. Brooke was required to fight in World War I, but he did not fight much. In April of 1915, he contracted some kind of blood poisoning from neglecting a wound and died shortly after. Because of Brooke's short life and his already admired works, he quickly acquired the reputation as "A young Apollo, golden-haired," and W.B. Yeats believed he was "the most handsome man in England." Some believe that Brooke's influence upon the poetic styles of war poetry was overrated, but most note that he should be admired for his efforts and sentimental interpretations. Brooke's literary role was commented on by Jon Stallworthy in the following passage: The thoughts to which he gave expression in the very few incomparable war sonnets which he has left behind will be shared by many thousands of young men moving resolutely and blithely forward into this, the hardest, cruelest, and the least-rewarded of all the wars that men have fought. They are a whole history and revelation of Rupert Brooke himself. Joyous, fearless, versatile, deeply instructed, with classic symmetry of mind and body, he was all that one would with England's noblest sons to be in days when no sacrifice but the most previous is acceptable, and the most precious is that which is most freely proffered.

    Notes on Life and Works
Rupert Brooke was born August 3, 1887, at Rugby, Warwickshire, and educated there and at King's College, Cambridge, which he left with a degree in 1909. His first book of verse, Poems , came out in 1911. After studying briefly in Munich in 1912, he returned to live in England at the Old Vicarage in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire. The next year he travelled abroad in Canada, the United States, and the south seas, particularly Taihiti, where he loved a native woman named Taata Mata. At the start of War World I, Brooke joined the Hood Battalion of the British Naval Division and served in the attack on Antwerp. Over the winter he trained at Blandford Camp in Dorsetshire. His five famous war sonnets appeared in

    Rupert Brooke
Rupert Brooke came to symbolise a generation – golden, gifted and doomed. Though he saw very little active service, he became celebrated for the poem that gave perfect expression to the patriotic mood of the first months of war – The Soldier. On April 4, 1915, the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral read the sonnet from the pulpit as part of his Easter Sunday sermon. The sermon was published in The Times the next day, and so the poem became an important document, distilling patriotic sentiment and public support for war. Brooke was born in 1887 and left Cambridge University in September 1914 to join the Antwerp Expedition as an officer.  He participated in the evacuation of Antwerp, Belgium in October 1914. He sailed with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in February 1915 to take part in Churchill's Dardenelles campaign. Meanwhile, back in England, to bolster the nation and inspire the youth, Dean Inge of St. Paul's read Brooke's sonnet The Soldier from the pulpit on Easter Sunday. However, already weakened by sunstroke, Brooke contracted blood poisoning from a mosquito bite on his lip, and two days before the landings at Gallipoli, on April 23rd, Rupert Brooke died. He was buried on the Island of Skyros, and Churchill himself wrote his obituary in The Times.

Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was born into a well-to-do, academic family; his father was a housemaster at Rugby School, where Rupert was educated before going on to King's College, Cambridge. He was a good student and athlete, and - in part because of his strikingly handsome looks - a popular young man who eventually numbered among his friends E. M. Forster, Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf, and Edward Thomas. Even as a student he was familiar in literary circles and came to know many important political, literary and social figures before the war. Brooke actually saw little combat during the war; he contracted blood-poisoning from a small neglected injury and died in April 1915, in the Aegean. Brooke's reputation, aside from the myth of the fallen "golden warrior" that his friends set about creating almost immediately after his death, rests on the five war sonnets of 1914. Some of his earlier poetry - "Fish," Helen and Menelaus," and "Heaven" - however, shows us a much different side of Brooke's talent and temperament. Some critics doubt that he would have written the sonnets later in the war had he lived. They show an enthusiasm that most soldiers and poets eventually lost; another poet
