Anne Bronte
Background
Member of the Leeds Toreador group, she has forgiven her brother Branwell for her Embrace. She enjoys the social whirl of Toreador life which she feels makes up for her isolation and tedious life as a mortal. For a Leeds Toreador, Anne is rather modern in her dress and speech. Anne has little contact with Emily. She doesn't understand her sister's passion for the Moors or her anachronistic dress. She avoids Emily, partly because they have little in common any more and partly because Anne doesn't want to damage her standing in Marie's eyes by associating too much with a friend of Anne Cartwright's. The only place they regularly meet is the Bradford Mechanic's Institute Library, which is regarded as neutral ground. However, Anne still reads her sister's books and also writes herself. Anne's books are mostly biographies of kine, for the research of which she find her Presence and Auspex very handy. After Marie, Anne is probably the most socially ambitious Toreador in the fief. She is very concious of status and position, even for a Toreador. She is usually one step ahead in the prestation game and can always be relied upon for an accurate assesment of who is on the way up or down. In Elysium she is often referred to (affectionately and not so affectionately) as 'the Harpy'. Anne would dearly love to become the Toreador Primogen of the fief. However, the only way for this to happen is if Marie leaves the fief, dies or becomes the Prince. Anne feels that the last option is by far the most likely and would be willing to help Marie in any way she could. At the moment, Anne is working on her own position. She hopes that soon she come to be regarded as an Elder in the fief. She is rather jealous of Anne Cartwright who achieved her own rather early recognition as an Elder by 'founding' the Bradford Toreador faction. Anne Bronte feels that this is not really playing the game.

Brother to Charlotte Emily and Anne
Born Thornton, 26th June 1817.
Died Haworth, 24th September 1848.
Childhood Maria and Elizabeth died from tuberculosis. The four surviving children, with only five years separating them, became a close and exclusive band. Education and Personality Branwell may have attended Haworth Grammar School for a short period when he was young. If he did, it was the only education he received outside his own home. He received his primary education, along with his sisters, from Aunt Branwell; visiting masters taught drawing and music, and his father tutored him in the classics, and introduced him to very wide reading. Branwell was a willing scholar with a precocious intellect. His translations of Horace's Odes were to receive critical acclaim; he played the organ in his father's church, and he aspired to being a professional portrait painter. Physically small with flaming red hair, Branwell was impulsive and quick-witted, and he had a penchant for showing off in company. Career In 1838 Branwell set himself up as a professional portrait painter in a rented studio in Bradford. He made many friends among the artistic community of the Bradford pubs, but he failed to make a living. In 1840 he took a position as tutor to a family at Broughton-In-Furness in Westmorland, but he was sacked within a year. From October 1841 to April 1842 he worked on the Leeds Manchester Railway, first as Clerk at Sowerby Bridge, and then as Clerk-In-Charge at Luddenden, from where, having missed a discrepancy in the accounts, he was sacked. At the beginning of 1843, his sister

She returned returns to Roe Head School in 1835 as a governess: for a time her sister Emily attended the same school as a pupil, but became homesick and returned to Haworth. Ann took her place from 1836 to 1837. In 1838, Charlotte left Roe Head School. In 1839 she accepted a position as governess in the Sidgewick family, but left after three months and returned to Haworth. In 1841 she became governess in the White family, but left, once again, after nine months. Upon her return to Haworth the three sisters, led by Charlotte, decided to open their own school after the necessary preparations had been completed. In 1842 Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to complete their studies. After a trip home to Haworth, Charlotte returned alone to Brussels, where she remained until 1844. Upon her return home the sisters embarked upon their project for founding a school, which proved to be an abject failure: their advertisements did not elicit a single response from the public. The following year Charlotte discovered Emily's poems, and decided to publish a selection of the poems of all three sisters: 1846 brought the publication of their Poems, written under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Biography - Branwell Bronte
Branwell Bronte was born on June 26th 1817 at Thornton, Bradford in Yorkshire, fourth child of the six Bronte children. His mother died in 1821.
Branwell Bronte received no formal education, partly due to financial restrictions as his father was struggling to keep the family together after his wife's death. Branwell does not appear to have suffered as he was a very capable scholar with an enthusiastic desire to learn. He indulged in the Gondal stories and enjoyed writing with Charlotte.
In February 1836 at the age of 19 Branwell was proposed a freemason, and later became secretary of the Lodge. Meetings were held at the Black Bull until 1833 where they were held at Lodge St.
From June 1838 to May 1839 Branwell was working as a portrait painter in Bradford. In January 1840 he took up position as tutor for the Postlethwaite family at Broughton-In-Furness, in June 1840 he is dismissed. In April 1841 he was employed as Clerk in Charge of Luddenden Foot station near Hebden Bridge. While there he was known to frequent the Lord Nelson Tavern. In March 1842 he is dismissed from his post as there was found to be a deficit in the station accounts, attributed to Branwell Bronte's incompetence rather than theft. January 1843 Anne has managed to secure post of tutor for Branwell with the Robinson family at Thorp Green. In July 1845 he is dismissed from his post as tutor, It was discovered that he had an affair with Mrs Robinson.

Picture two shows the main street with the Black Bull public house on the right, a regular drinking haunt of Branwell, their brother. The Bronte family are not buried in the churchyard but in a vault beneath the church itself. Anne Bronte, the youngest of the three sisters, died in Scarborough and is buried in St. Mary's churchyard, overlooking the sea. All died of tuberculosis at a young age. Charlotte (1816-1855) was 38, Emily (1818-1848) died aged 30, and Anne was only 29 when she died in 1849. Patrick outlived all his family and died in 1861 at the age of 84. There were three other children in the family apart from the famous authors - Maria 1814-1825, Elizabeth 1815-1825 and his only son, Branwell 1817-1848.

Lori Bell
, Dancing Needle Designs, April 1996 Maria Branwell completed her sampler April 15, 1791. She was 8 years old. Her sampler was a simple one, comprised of an alphabet, biblical text and a simple geometric border. It is worked with dark green silk and pink and ginger brown wool on canvas. Maria's sampler is the first of a unique family collection. The collection is not unique for the style or technical expertise displayed by the embroiderers. It's interest lies in the fact that three of Maria's daughters grew up to become noted Victorian authors; the Bronte sisters. Maria's sisters, Ann, Margaret, and Elizabeth Branwell each completed a similar sampler worked in the same dark green silk. Ann Branwell, later Ann Kingston, signed but did not date her sampler. Margaret Branwell signed and dated her work March 23, 1799. Sister Elizabeth finished her signed sampler on 11 October. The date has been lost due to a torn corner. On December 29, 1812, Maria Branwell married Reverend Patrick Bronte. In 1820 the family moved to Haworth, West Yorkshire, England, where Maria died a year later. In 1822 Maria's youngest sister, Elizabeth began caring for the six Bronte children. That same year the eldest Bronte children, Maria, age 8, Elizabeth, age 7, and Charlotte, age 6, each completed a sampler similar to that described earlier, except that they were worked entirely in ginger brown wool.

Three writers who influenced the direction of the English novel also happened to be sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were all born in Thornton, England in the early 1800s. Their father Patrick was born in Ireland, educated in England, and became an Anglican clergyman. He and his wife had six children. The two oldest daughters, Maria and Elizabeth died before reaching adulthood. Of the remaining children, Charlotte was the eldest, born April 21, 1816; followed by brother Patrick Branwell, born June 26, 1817; then Emily, born July 30, 1818; and Anne, born January 17, 1820.
Shortly after Anne's birth, their father accepted a position in Haworth, located within the Yorkshire moors. Mrs. Bronte died soon after reaching Haworth, and the children were cared for by an aunt named Elizabeth Branwell. In 1824, Charlotte and Emily were sent to Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire, but they returned within a year. The treatment at Cowan Bridge was considered harsh, and Charlotte later modeled Lowood School (Jane Eyre) after it.
For the next several years, the Bronte children were taught at home. They invented games and told imaginary stories to each other. Charlotte attended Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head for one year in 1831, then returned home and taught her sisters. Charlotte returned to Roe Head as a teacher in 1835, but after suffering from depression and ill health, she resigned from her position. It was at Roe Head that Charlotte met her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Her many letters to Nussey have served as the best documentation of her life.

The Bronte Sisters Jane Eyre Jane Eyre - Study Guide Shirley The Tenant of Wildfell Hall ... Wuthering Heights - Study Guide Introduction Charlotte (1816-55)
Emily Jane (1818-48)
Anne (1820-49) The lives of the Brontë sisters has been the subject of public interest and speculation since the sad early deaths of Emily and Anne shortly after their brother Branwell This was only heightened by third literary sister Charlotte's comments in the years that followed and the spate of biographies analysing them that appear to this day. The progress of their legend reflects the change in attitude towards literary biography in the years that have followed: from cautious, slightly reverential and respectful discussion through scandalised revelations, towards feminist revisionism and new interpretations even nearly one and a half centuries after their deaths. Through this process, the respect given to the different sisters and their works has altered dramatically, and notably Emily and her single novel, Wuthering Heights are given the most adulation now, where once Charlotte was seen as the most talented of the sisters. Their works were published initially under the names Ellis (Emily), Currer (Charlotte) and Acton (Anne) Bell, due to the fact that it was considered unseemly at the time for women to write and publish books. The interest in their real identities and the possibility that they were in fact all one and the same woman was initially used as a publicity tool to their great chagrin.
