About the Author
Agnes Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), which are generally considered more conservative novels than her sisters. The close-knit Bronte family have inspired many studies, in which Charlotte, the oldest child, is characterized as the most ambitious writer, and Emily the greatest genius. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser's Magazine , and The Edinburgh Review . Inspired by a box of 12 wooden soldiers, the children wove tales and legends associated with remote Africa. With these tales the children broke the monotonous daily routines, like they later poured their joys and disappointment in their novels. Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Charlotte and Branwell recorded their stories in minute notebooks. In 1839 Anne worked for a short period as a governess to the Inghams at Blake Hall and later in same position to the Robinsons at Thorpe Green Hall from 1841 to 1845. Her brother Branwell joined her there as a tutor in 1843. He fell unfortunately in love for Mrs Robinson and Anne had to leave the work. Poems by Currer Ellis and Acton Bell . Her first novel

When Branwell was dismissed in disgrace about two years later, Anne resigned her post, feeling that was the only proper thing to do . Though she was apparently glad to leave the post, she was depressed over the uncertainty of her future. The publication of the sisters' Poems in May 1846 was quite a bright spot for her, even though they didn't sell very well. Still, this publication encouraged all of them to write novels for publication, Anne's contribution being Agnes Grey . This novel, like Emily's

"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints."
~ Psalm 116:15 ~
here's little joy in life for me,
And little terror in the grave;
I've lived the parting hour to see
Of one I would have died to save.
Calmly to watch the failing breath, Wishing each sigh might be the last; Longing to see the shade of death O'er those beloved features cast; The cloud, the stillness that must part The darling of my life from me; And then to thank God from my heart, To thank Him well and fervently; Although I knew that we had lost The hope and glory of our life; And now, benighted, tempest-tossed, Must bear alone the weary strife. Feel free to republish this or use it however you want.

?The one story in English literature in which style, characters and subject are in perfect keeping.? ?George Moore
The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
Novel by Anne Bronte, published in 1847. The strongly autobiographical narrative concerns the travails of Agnes Grey, a rector's daughter, in her service as governess, first to the unruly Bloomfield children and then with the callous Murrays. Agnes's sole consolations in this dreary life are the natural environment and her blossoming relationship with Weston, the local curate, whom she eventually marries.
Ingram Being a governess is the only "respectable" career open to an unmarried, educated woman in Victorian England. But when Agnes Grey takes a position as a family's home tutor, she cannot anticipate the hardships, humiliation, and loneliness that awaits her. Drawing on her own experiences, Bronte depicts the harsh conditions that governesses were forced to endure in the 19th century. 2 cassettes.
