Or search the encyclopaedia: Brecht, Bertolt (Eugen Berthold Friedrich) German dramatist and poet. He was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century theatre. A committed Marxist, he sought to develop an epic theatre which aimed to destroy the suspension of disbelief as Die Dreigroschenoper/The Threepenny Opera (1928), set to music by Kurt Weill. Later plays include Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder/Mother Courage and her Children Der kaukasische Kreidekreis/The Caucasian Chalk Circle , a concise expression of his theatrical philosophy. His other works include Leben des Galilei/The Life of Galileo Der gute Mensch von Setzuan/The Good Woman of Setzuan (1943), and Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg der Arturo Ui/The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui

Literary Translations ...Translated from the German by E. J. Campfield Wolfgang Borchert One of the briefest and. most tragic writing careers of the 20th century was that of Wolfgang Borchert. Born in Hamburg in 1921, Borchert was drafted into the German infantry in 1941 and assigned to the Russian front where he was critically wounded. His statements against the Third Reich earned him a death sentence suspended so he could be sent back to the Russian front. Failing health left him ill fit for such rigors however, and upon receiving a medical discharge, he was promptly retried for his anti-Hitler statements and sent to prison. Set free at war's end by American troops in southern Germany, the only way he could get home to Hamburg was to walk a distance of nearly 400 miles. Physically broken, Borchert lived barely two years after the war, yet it was during this brief time that he turned out virtually all of his writings. His most successful work was a drama, The Outsider ), performed originally as a radio play and aired for the first time in Hamburg the evening following his death. He was 26.

Brecht, Bertolt The Unseemly Old Lady
Genre Short Story (5 pp.) Keywords Aging Death and Dying Family Relationships Freedom ... Society Summary Much to the disapproval of her children, a newly-widowed seventy-two year old woman decides to continue living independently and spends her time in disreputable behavior like going to the cinema alone, visiting insalubrious parts of town, eating at inns, and going to the races. She befriends a middle-aged cobbler (who is also, scandalously, a Social Democrat) and a young "feeble-minded" kitchen maid, and she stops visiting her husband's grave. One of her sons assumes she must be sick and wants to call the doctor. Without consulting her children, she mortgages her large house and apparently gives the money to her cobbler. The narrator (her grandchild) observes that she has lived two lives: the first as dutiful daughter, wife, and mother, and the second "as Mrs. B, an unattached person without responsibilities." She dies suddenly, without illness, and the grandchild describes a photograph taken of her corpse after death: she has the face of one who "had savoured to the full the long years of servitude and the short years of freedom and consumed the bread of life to the last crumb."

Membership is offered and a Yearbook is published. The annotated links page is particularly well-researched.

Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, Germany , on 19th February, 1898. He studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Munich before becoming a medical orderly in a German military hospital during the First World War . This experience reinforced his hatred of war and influenced his support for the failed Socialist revolution in 1919.
After the war Brecht returned to university but eventually became more interested in literature than medicine. His first play to be produced was Bael (1922). This was followed by
