Brecht, Bertolt
General Bio Epic Theatre Influence ... Works b. Feb. 10, 1898, Augsburg
d. Aug. 14, 1956, East Berlin original name EUGEN BERTHOLD FRIEDRICH BRECHT, German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer whose epic theatre departed from the conventions of theatrical illusion and developed the drama as a social and ideological forum for leftist causes. Brecht was, first, a superior poet, with a command of many styles and moods. As a playwright he was an intensive worker, a restless piecer-together of ideas not always his own ( The Threepenny Opera is based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, and Edward II on Marlowe), a sardonic humorist, and a man of rare musical and visual awareness; but he was often bad at creating living characters or at giving his plays tension and shape. As a producer he liked lightness, clarity, and firmly knotted narrative sequence; a perfectionist, he forced the German theatre, against its nature, to underplay. As a theoretician he made principles out of his preferencesand even out of his faults.

Brecht, Bertolt Pronunciation Key Brecht, Bertolt , German dramatist and poet, b. Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht. His brilliant wit, his outspoken Marxism, and his revolutionary experiments in the theater have made Brecht a vital and controversial force in modern drama. His early plays, such as Baal (1919) and Drums in the Night (1922), are examples of nihilistic expressionism and caused riots at their openings, bringing Brecht instant notoriety. In Mann ist Mann Die Dreigroschenoper [the threepenny opera] (1928), with music by Kurt Weill, is based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera ; it reveals Brecht's continued hostility toward the capitalist social structure as well as his bittersweet compassion for humanity. Under National Socialism Brecht went into exile (1933), settling in Denmark and later in the United States. Works written in his most mature phase include Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder [Mother Courage and her children] (1941) and Der gute Mensch von Sezuan (tr.

    Biography of Bertolt Brecht
    About the Author

Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898 in the medieval city of Augsburg, part of the Bavarian section of the German Empire. Married in 1897, his father was a Catholic and his mother a Protestant. Brecht was their first child and he was baptized as Eugen Bertolt Friedrich Brecht. His father, Bertolt Friedrich Brecht, worked as Chief Clerk in a paper factory and clearly fit the definition of "bourgeois." His mother, Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie Brezing, was ill with breast cancer most of his young life. He had one brother, Walter, who was born in 1900. Throughout his life Brecht was supported by his family, especially his father with whom he disagreed strongly concerning the bourgeois lifestyle. His father continued to provide financial support and a home for much of his life. Only one correspondence between them survives: a letter where Brecht begs his father to raise his illegitimate children. Brecht was a sickly child, with a congenital heart condition and a facial tic. As a result he was sent to a sanitarium to relax. At age six he attended a Protestant elementary school (Volksschule) and at age ten a private school: The Royal Bavarian Realgymnasium (Königlich-Bayerisches Realgymnasium). Like most students, he was educated in Latin and the humanities, and later exposed to thinkers such as Nietzsche. He suffered a heart attack at the age of twelve, but soon recovered and continued his education.

Brecht, Bertolt (1898-1956) Born in 1896, Bertolt (Eugen Berthold) Brecht became Germany's most celebrated and influential dramatist of the twentieth century. His depictions of homosexual desire are found only in a few of his earliest writings. In these works, homosexuality is often cloaked in ambiguity and almost always is tied to issues of power struggle, manipulation, and sadomasochism. Sponsor Message.
One example is Leben Eduards des Zweiten von England , the adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II that Brecht undertook in 1923 in collaboration with Lion Feuchtwanger. Performed and published in 1924, the play's dramatic action concerns Edward's overthrow, a plot prompted by what is perceived as a socially disruptive sexual relationship, the monarch's physical and emotional infatuation with Gaveston, in Brecht's version an attractive butcher's son on whom the King lavishes his affections, sexual favors, and wealth. Edward refuses to relinquish his favorite even at the risk of the throne being forcibly wrested from him by his enemies. Edward loses Gaveston, the throne, and eventually, his life but gains in the process spiritual transcendence and the status of tragic hero. Young Brecht was an avid reader and became enthralled with the works of Arthur Rimbaud. He was also intrigued by Rimbaud's tempestuous relationship with Paul Verlaine. The plays

Of course, there are a few minor details that separate us, such as fame and the urgency that propelled him into this kind of life. But let's just say ... I can relate. For the German playwright of The Threepenny Opera the aphorism 'it's a small world' never rang truer. Brecht's socio-critical and highly satirical writings made him a favorite enemy of the National Socialists in pre-war Germany. In 1933 he was forced out of the country by the Nazi government. A detour via Paris led him to Denmark. Little did he know that this was only the beginning of his odyssey. Like the pestilence, the Nazis roared their ugly heads wherever Brecht decided to go. His travels took him to the Soviet Union and even Mali, but there seemed no end to the Nazi expansion. Last, but not least, Brecht arrived in the US in 1941. With the help of his good friend and fellow exile writer Lion Feuchtwanger, he settled in Los Angeles.

From 1913-1928 he had established himself as a lyric poet and versatile writer of plays. Brecht won the Kleist drama prize in 1922 for his first two expressionist plays Trommeln in der Nacht (Drums in the Night) (1918), and Baal The Threepenny Opera (1928) is one of his best known works. Other famous plays: Mother Courage and her Children The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1945) Brecht's hatred of the Nazis is demonstrated in a series of short episodic plays and poems, Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches (1945) and The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui (1957). He was a Marxist, and saw his plays as a social experiment: he wanted the audience to have critical detachment, not emotional involvement, with the action.
