This essay contains material that may be offensive and should be viewed in its historical context. William Cowper Brann "THE BUCK NEGRO" from The Works of Brann the Iconoclast (New York: Brann Publishers, 1898), vol. 2 I once severely shocked the pseudo-philanthropists by suggesting that if the South is ever to rid herself of the negro rape-fiend she must take a day off and kill every member of the accursed race that declines to leave the country. I am not wedded to my plan; but, like the Populists, I do insist that those who object to it are in duty bound to offer something better. We have tried the restraining influence of religion and the elevating forces of education upon the negro without avail. We have employed moral suasion and legal penalties; have incarcerated the offenders for life at hard labor, and hanged them by the neck in accordance with statutory law. We have hunted the black rape-fiend to death with hounds, bored him with buckshot; fricasseed him over slow fires and flayed him alive; but the despoilment of white women by these brutal imps of darkness and the devil is still of daily occurrence. The baleful shadow of the black man hangs over every Southern home like the sword of Damocles, like the blight of death - an avatar of infamy, a decree of damnation. There is not to-day in all this land of Christ an aged mother who is safe one single hour unless guarded by watchful sons, a wife who may rest secure beyond the reach

  • Purpose
Pluralism and Unity explores the problem of American identity and the nature of political and cultural pluralism in the early 20th century. Originally conceived as a contribution to the U.S. exhibit at Expo '98 in Lisbon, Portugal, Pluralism and Unity has grown into a continuing investigation of the multiple dimensions of modernity and pluralism. The authors have sought to present a series of choices in the debate about pluralism rather than any single thesis. We hope that we have provided a body of evidence broad enough to introduce our visitors to the rich debate on pluralism at the beginning of the 20th century in the United States, and deep enough to provide a sense for the enormous intellectual and creative energies that have been dedicated to this issue across the spectrum of American society. The right Brann
For those of you who are ignorant of William Cowper Brann's place in the universe, be advised he was editor/publisher of a muckraking but extremely amusing newspaper in Waco, Texas, toward the end of the 19th century. Named The Iconoclast, Brann's newspaper reflected his editorial opinion, something he possessed on practically every subject; and he loved to express his opinions. When Brann was gunned down by an irate reader on April Fool's Day 1898, a date whose irony he would have appreciated, he had been publishing The Iconoclast for 40 months and had built up a circulation of a quarter of a million copies a month. A 12-volume set of his newspaper files was published in 1912 but has been out-of-print and mostly unavailable for decades. A former newspaperman, Jerry Flemmons synthesized the most memorable Brannisms in alphabetical order, by subject, from America to The Universe, with stops for Baptists and Texas Politics. Readers who relish wit, irony, and a well-turned phrase can expect a treat in meeting Brann, one of those journalists determined to speak their minds if it killed them; and in Brann's case it did.

In putting into permanent form the complete works of
William Cowper Brann, twenty-one years after his death,
the sole purpose of the present publishers is to preserve in
its entirety the genius of a writer whose work, though
produced under the stress of journalism, is destined to
    endure as literature.
Upon the issues discussed by Brann, the publishers take no
sides; they do not stand as sponsors for, nor do they desire to appear in the light of either approving or disapproving his opinions or methods. They were friends and neighbors of many years' standing of the men and institutions mentioned in Brann's writings, but were in no way involved in the bitter controversies and deplorable events which led to Brann's untimely and dramatic death. The plan and arrangement of this twelve-volume set of Brann is simple. The first volume is composed of articles of various length gathered from miscellaneous sources, and
