/ The traumatic lusciousness of history, as seen by Dionne Brand
story by Rinaldo Walcott / Xtra! Apr 22 1999
On the evening of Apr 8, there is a long line-up outside the George Ignatief Theatre at the University of Toronto for a reading by Dionne Brand from her just released second novel.
The buzz outside the theatre briskly pours inside, where the excitement is almost uncontainable. Some people have to be turned away. The reading, hosted by Toronto Women's Bookstore and Random House, is sold out. Stefanie Samuels' introduction is a praise-song to Brand, calling her a "powerfully gentle storyteller."
Brand arrives at the podium, telling the audience she thought "no one would show for the reading." The laughter from the audience is filled with love. Brand then eloquently and poetically reads from At The Full And Change Of The Moon for about an hour and a half. The evening ends at 52 Inc where folks eat, drink and dance well into the night.
Land To Light On, her Governor General's and Ontario Trillium award-winning poetry collection, has reportedly gone into its fourth printing, making Brand a best-selling poet - an unheard of category in these times.

For Land to Light On: “As behind most of our human celebrations, there are tragedies being played out behind the curtain of joy, for Brand is well aware of the world’s longings and despairs, how we are all the offspring of slaves, and/or – what is so much harder to bear – the offspring of slave owners.”
“Brand’s distinguished voice and articulate vision situate her galaxies beyond most contemporary practitioners of poetry.”
    Globe and Mail
“Brand’s poetry is confrontational confessionalism. She uses her life experiences to talk about oppression of many sorts in the Caribbean and Canada. She attempts to find links between different kinds of oppression – and that is the strength of her work. It is multilayered. There may be a nihilist tendency – but it is justified.”
    George Elliott Clarke
“You don’t read Dionne Brand, you hear her.”

Brand, Dionne. At the Full and Change of the Moon. Oct. 1999. 304p. Grove; dist. by Publishers Group West, $24 (0-8021-1649-3). GraceAnne A. DeCandido Conde, Maryse. Windward Heights. Tr. by Richard Philcox. Aug. 1999. 352p. Soho; dist. by Farrar, $24 (1-56947-161-4). Set in the Caribbean amidst the societal and political turbulence at the turn of the nineteenth century, this fascinating story is a retelling, with some substantial reworking of plot and characters, of Emily Bronte's classic, Wuthering Heights . It is the steamy, sometimes sordid, recounting of the passionate love between Razye, the dark-skinned, dark-tempered foundling, and Cathy, the beautiful and high-spirited mulatto. As in Bronte's classic, the story unfolds through the narratives of various characters, allowing a many-faceted view of circumstances, characters, and events, and highlighting the intensity of the complex interrelated issues involving family, politics, race, religion, and class. Conde's portrayal of characters is universally somewhat unflattering. Razyeis mean, perverse, and obsessed. Cathy, spurning her passion for Razye, marries into Creole society and dies very young during the birth of her daughter. Her death only heightens Razye's obsession, however, and the drama is played out in future generations. Conde's rich prose, translated from French, does justice to the complexity of the story and makes this book difficult to put down.

Toronto Star Poetry is here, just here. Something wrestling with how we live, something dangerous, something honest.
Bread Out Of Stone Born in Trinidad , holding degrees from U of T, OISE and currently completing a PhD in women's history, Dionne's clear, evocative and impassioned language brings new dimension to discussions of race, gender, sexuality, politics and class. She has authored five collections of poetry, a book of children's poetry ( Earth Magic), and a collection of short fiction ( Sans Souci and Other Stories). No Language Is Neutral was nominated for the Governor General's Award for poetry and, in our humble opinion, should be on every bookshelf. Just before her Scream reading Coach House Press released the collection of essays, Bread Out Of Stone, for which Adrienne Rich has called her a cultural critic of uncompromising courage Grammar Of Dissent , an anthology of work by Dionne, Claire Harris (who was also reading at the Scream in 1995) and Nourbese Philip (who read in 1994) was published by Goose Lane. Dionne co-authored Rivers Have Sources, Trees Have Roots - Speaking of Racism

    Dionne Brand
was born in Guayguayare, Trinidad and moved to Toronto in 1970, where she went on to build a reputation as one of Canada’s finest writers. Winner of the Governor General’s Award for Poetry and the Trillium Award in 1997 for Land to Light On, Brand is also known as an essayist, short story writer and filmmaker. Her latest book A Map to the Door of No Return, is a thought-provoking map of her own art in which she sketches the shifting borders of home and nation, the connection to place in Canada and the world beyond. paulo da costa spoke with Dionne at WordFest in October.
Dionne Brand - I wanted to write a piece of work that meandered around that image taken from the historical moment when blacks were taken from Africa to the so-called New World. I wanted to contemplate that moment, as it seemed to me that it existed still, hovered over the lives of blacks of the Diaspora. I suppose, taking my own position as, if not generalizable, but certainly having some bearing on others in the same situation, others from the same history; I wanted to think about how it still worked as a metaphor for how we were taken, in the lives that we lived in the contemporary, how we were uprooted. I wanted to go beyond the historical fact of the door, or slavery, etc., because that we know and agree to.
