Bradley, Marion Zimmer (1930- ), writer Born on June 3, 1930, in Albany, New York, Marion Zimmer studied at the New York State College for Teachers from 1946 to 1948 and graduated from Hardin-Simmons College in 1964. In 1949 she married Robert A. Bradley, from whom she later was divorced. She retained his name professionally. Bradley was a prolific writer, producing numerous historical, fantasy, and gothic novels and short stories under her own name and several pseudonyms. She is, however, best known for her many science fiction novels and stories. She published her first important work, a story entitled "Centaurus Changeling," in 1954. Her first novel, The Door Through Space, appeared in 1961. Two more novels, The Sword of Aldones and The Planet Savers, were published in 1962. Both take place on Darkover, a planet that is home to a lost Terran (Earth) colony. It became the setting for a series of more than 20 science fiction novels by Bradley; in addition, other writers set their own work on Darkover. Bradley achieved best-seller status with The Mists of Avalon (1982), a retelling of the Arthurian legends with an emphasis on the female characters. Similarly

T he book "The mists of Avalon" was written by Marion Zimmer Bradley in 1982 and printed by A.Knopf (New York). The german translation by Manfred Ohl und Hans Sartorius came out in 1983 by S.Fischer Verlag (Frankfurt) It tells us about the life of the legendary king Artus as seen by his half- sister Morgaine (also known as Morgan le Fay) and gives a wonderfull insight into the feeling and religious beliefs of those days. Marion Zimmer Bradley biography Goddess to the pagans, queen of the science fiction world, the force behind the Society for Creative Anachronism, Marion Zimmer Bradley's first dream was to become an opera singer and to support her musical training by writing. Beginning in her teens, she wrote anything she could sell and made her first money cranking out sci-fi stories and "true confessions" for pulp magazines. At the time of her death on September, 25, 1999, at age 69, she was still actively involved in research, writing, editing and publishing The MZB Fantasy Magazine. She sang for her own pleasure. bodyOffer(6135) In 1958, the first novel of her Darkover series, The Planet Savers, brought her widespread fame. In 1983, her most famous work, The Mists of Avalon, hit the best seller list and stayed there for four months. Each of those novels generated sequels. There were eventually twenty one Darkover novels, set on a planet colonized by earth at the end of the 21st century, and Mists was followed by The Forest House (1994) and The Lady of Avalon (1997). Prolific from her earliest years, she wrote early in the mornings when her children were in grade school. During her own childhood, her mother wrote down the stories she told before Marion could write. She drafted The Forest House in high school, and by the age of seventeen, was publishing a magazine for science fiction fans, a portent of her later MZB Fantasy Magazine.
