Granta Books
The Collected Stories of T. Coraghessan Boyle
T. Coraghessan Boyle is regarded as one of America's greatest living short-story writers. This volume brings all his stories together for the first time. Without a Hero
These stories crackle with the flamboyant energy and wit of what the Los Angeles Times called a 'ferocious, delicious imagination, often darkly satirical and always infatuated with language'. Budding Prospects
One day the opportunity to make half a million dollars, tax-free, presented itself. And Felix had to do only one thing: nurture 390 acres of cannabis in the lonely hills of northern California. Water Music
Water Music is the rambunctious account of two men's wild adventures through the gutters of London and the Scottish Highlands to their unlikely meeting in darkest Africa, as they search for the source of the Niger, a river no European has ever laid eyes upon.

T. Coraghessan Boyle: Budding Prospects
"I've always been a quitter. I quit the Boy Scouts, the glee club, the marching band. Gave up my paper route, turned my back on the church, the basketball team. I dropped out of college, sidestepped the army with a 4-F on the grounds of mental instability, went back to school, made a go of it, entered a Ph.D. program in nineteenth-century British literature, sat in the front row, took notes assiduously, bought a pair of horn-rims, and quit on the eve of my comprehensive exams. I got married, separated, divorced. Quit smoking, quit jogging, quit eating red meat. I quit jobs: digging graves, pumping gas, selling insurance, showing pornographic films in an art theater in Boston."

Without a Hero
by T. Coraghessan Boyle

Am I the only one who feels that T. Coraghessan Boyle deserves caning? Boyle has made my short list of authors who deserve some punishment since I flipped through his story collection Greasy Lake (1985), which characteristically teeters between hilariously brilliant and pungently annoying. With his opium-addict book jacket photos and his cooler-than-thou narrative attitude, Boyle is the embodiment of the undisciplined genius. He's the child prodigy you remember from junior high school that spent hours scribbling bawdy poems about the history teacher instead of channeling his energies into something more productive. Boyle's last two novels, East Is East and the truly inspired The Road to Wellville , with their sardonic treatments of crossed cultures and self-assured con men, promised some greater aim for Boyle's talents. The author clearly has a skewed view of America, a piercing view targeted at the self-appointed guardians of humanity who all too often turn out to be hucksters for a line of the emperor's new clothes. Not to mention that Boyle possesses a truly impressive vocabulary and a genuinely original prose style. The story collection Without a Hero , however, once again demonstrates Boyle's uncanny ability to squander his God-given resources. Like most of his earlier story collections, it's a grab bag of both keen insights into the American ethos and botched attempts at politically incorrect satire.

Any doctor that prescribed five enemas a day, sexual abstinence, and high doses of radium exposure for an ulcer would be kicked out of town before sunset. Unless, of course, that doctor was Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and that town was Battle Creek, Michigan in the year 1907. There Kellogg, the self-proclaimed health messiah and inventor of corn flakes and peanut butter, reigned supreme. For over twenty years, Kellogg's sanitarium devoted to "scientific living" attracted the best and brightest of Americans out to find the magic cure for disease and death. Celebrities like Thomas Edison, Upton Sinclair, and Henry Ford all tried their hand at Kellogg's prescription, which included all of the above as well as strict vegetarianism, electric shocks, laugh therapy, and more. This preposterous medical regime and the man that inspired it serve as the subject for T. Coraghessan Boyle's latest novel, The Road to Wellville . Under Boyle's razor-sharp pen, Kellogg is reduced to a shallow, self-serving hypocrite who is more out to promote his dubious brand of morality than heal the sick.
