Steven R. Boyett HOME BIOGRAPHY BIBLIOGRAPHY NEWS SIGNINGS FAQs Steven R. Boyett was born in Atlanta, Georgia, grew up all over Florida, and attended the University of Tampa on a writing scholarship before quitting to write his first novel, Ariel , when he was nineteen. His second published novel, the incomplete The Architect of Sleep , was begun while working for the History and English Departments at the University of Florida in Gainesville. His standing bet with the English professors was that he would buy lunch if he ever misspelled a word. That lunch is getting awfully cold. On the other hand, he cannot do basic arithmetic. Boyett has practiced martial arts since 1974, primarily Tae Kwon Do and Aikido, and will continue to practice until he gets it right. He has been a professional paper marbler , and for several years co-owned and operated a booth at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Northern and Southern California. It was more fun than any human being should be allowed to have. In 1984 Boyett moved from Florida to Los Angeles, California. In 1997 he was hired by Pixar/Disney to write the second draft of

To my chagrin, I've since lost the manuscript, but it went something like this: The sky over Riverdale was pink and the clouds were impossibly fluffy and white. The comforting weight of my textbooks tugged at my arms. I had a 7:00 PM date with Ronnie and a joy buzzer in my pocket to pay Reggie back for yesterday's bucket over the door at Pop's. Everything was as it should be, all the elements of my life were in place. But something was wrong, something nagged, something

For years, used copies have been making the rounds, commanding a premium price at auctions, and making a tidy profit for used book dealers. Now, you can not only get your own fresh, updated version, you can get it as in the latest technology for ebooks. Given the theme of the novel, the metamorphosis seems particularly ironic. For two years, Pete Garey wandered through the strange new world that is Earth after the Change, a moment when technology ceased to work and things like planes, trains, and automobiles became useless junk. He was alone until the day he was found by a unicorn who would become his familiar. Ariel is just one of the many mythical, magical creatures to appear after the Change, but the only one with the stunning ability (or, perhaps, the only one with the desire...) to talk. The bond between Pete and Ariel will be like no other he has experienced.

Essay by D. D. "Doc" Shade — June 04, 2002 A Boy And His Unicorn Are Hard Parted Take one part Earth Abides , add a dash of Alas, Babylon and throw in a good measure of David Brin's The Postman and then add an equal part of C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia and you have the world of Steven R Boyett's Ariel (or a reasonable facsimile thereof). Perhaps we should also add just a pinch of Harlan Ellison's A Boy And His Dog to capture some of the charm between Pete and Ariel, a boy and his Unicorn. What to do call such a world? I call it a post-apocalyptic contemporary fantasy. I'm not sure this would be an appropriate sub-genre because Clute and Grant call the book a straight fantasy. Well, here's how they actually explain it, Ariel is a fantasy set unusually in a version of our world which experienced a 'crosshatch' incursion from faerie before the tale began, generating a Balkanized landscape similar to that more often found in a post-holocaustic science fiction." Clute and Grant further explain that many fantasy novels take place in more than one world and the two worlds remain separate from each other throughout the duration of the novel(s). I immediately thought of

TREKS NOT TAKEN
by Steven R. Boyett
Sneaker Press/Midnight Graffiti, ISBN 1-882813-05-7, 1996, US$12.95
A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
"Call me irresponsible. Some years agothe stardate is unimportant nowthe irresistible motivation of several outstanding warrants and the certainty of my impecunious nature, caused me to enlist about a Federation starship, for just as some men hold the briny Sea in their hearts, I have empty Space in my head." That's just one sample from this book of twenty selections, showing how some famous authors might have written STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, had Hollywood waved the money in front of them. My only real complaint with this is that Boyett concentrated more on modern authors than on the authors of the so-called Western Canon. I would have liked to see Shakespeare's "Merry Ensigns of Windsor," or Jane Austen's "Mansfield Trek" or Charles Dickens's "Data Copperfield" or even George Eliot's "Romulan." (And I would have thought that "The Brothers Data" by Dostoyevsky was an obvious entry.) But we do have Melville, Joyce, Hemingway, and Conrad. We also have Rice, Clancy, Vonnegut, and Dr. Seuss. I read only the stories for those authors with whom I had some familiarity (which was about three-quarters of them). And for these Boyett captured the style remarkably well, considering the wide range they cover. For anyone who enjoys reading a wide variety of authors and styles, I highly recommend this book. If you can't find it in your local bookstore, it can be ordered from Mark Ziesing (P. O. Box 76, Shingletown CA 96088
