"Another Example of the Author's Versatility"
Have you ever known what it was like to be lonely, to be alone, no friends, no one to love you? Lauren Fowler does. She has known that feeling her whole life. She has been picked on, laughed at and ridiculed all of her life. That is until Syntian Cree shows up. Somehow ever since he showed up at the bookstore she works at things have been happening.  Not all these things have been good. People that have been mean or cruel to Lauren in one way or another have been turning up either dead or in the hospital. Some crazed man has been attacking the women from the bookstore that Lauren works at, and no one has a clue to the man is. On the other hand people are starting to pay attention to Lauren. Her life seems to be changing for the better.  Lauren has no idea that Syntian is responsible for that change. She has no idea he is what is called a Nightwind. A demon from hell brought to earth through witchcraft. Generations past an ancestor of Lauren's summoned the Nightwind and made him sign a pact to protect her and hers. So through the years anytime one of the women in Lauren's family summoned him he came and did what he was commanded.

However, there are many who would not see Gillian and Kaelan wed, and one of those is Kaelan’s brother Duncan, who is hostile to Kaelan for no reason that is explained in the text. Claiming Gillian is too young for Kaelan, he sells his own brother to the highest bidder in a marriage auction and chases Gillian away with the news that her lover only meant to bed her. Actually, the story begins several years after Gillian and Kaelan’s initial romance.

Twilight Times Books, June 1999
ISBN 0966820932 ( BloodWind cdrom); 1586979965 ( Bloodwind paperback ) From the beginning, this book grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go. The premise is a well-structured variant on "Mars needs women," involving an interstellar empire of common ancestry with Earth that has been decimated by bacteriological warfare rendering all their females infertile. They evolve a society based upon the kidnapping and enslavement of Earth females. Needless to say, the kidnapped women want to overthrow their oppressors and return home. But all that is background. The soul of this story is Kamerone Cree, raised since infancy to kill at his Empire's command. Due to a convoluted series of internested plots (I can't explain more without giving away vital plot twists), he is forced to undergo behavioral modification therapy a polite way of saying psychological torture and subliminal brainwashing to make him fall in love with the heroine, Dr. Bridget Dunne. Except he is incapable of the emotion. So they try to build it out of the emotions he is capable of lust, anger, jealousy, etc.

Use caution in beginning this tale, however, for its memory will haunt one's dreams with its extraordinary powerful telling. Fans of Boyett-Compo's work who have previously fallen under the mesmerizing spell of the Cree and McGregor men will delight in this further telling of their history.…Once again fans of the master of the fantastic and fantasy will find their appetites fully satisfied by the extraordinarily fantastic novel Prince Of The Wind . Boyett-Compo's fantastic world breathes a freshness and originality because she dares the impossible, thrusting her hero into a world of abuse and rape, and creating an insane protagonist capable of incredible evil. The haunting richness and vividness of the tale, however, may walk in the reader's own dreams, so use caution when reading ones self to sleep. For if sleep does come, it will be rife with danger and deviltry."—Cindy Penn

Thank you so much Ms. Compo, for taking the time out of your busy schedule, to do an interview with me.
Debbie . How long have you been a writer?
Charlotte . I have been writing since was about twelve years old. My first 'novel' was written in a composition book. It was called Western Flame and the hero was based on Michael Landon..with whom I was deeply in love after watching him as Little Joe Cartwright. I wrote my second 'novel' when I was sixteen. It was called The Great Giovanni and was written for my new love, Robert Vaughn whose tortured character of Lee in The Magnificent Seven thrilled me no end!
Debbie . How did you get started?
Charlotte
Debbie
. How do you go about doing research for your books?
Charlotte . Most of my work has been built on my own imagination. The worlds I have created, the characters I've given birth to, and the casting of strange magic has come primarily from that imagination. I have incorporated certain myths and legends into my work, but primarily, what you read has sprang from my own creative processes. I read everything I could get my hands on pretaining to the occult and the paranormal when I was growing up. A lot of what I read stuck with me and I used that knowledge as a springboard.
Debbie . Is it very extensive?

CHARLOTTE BOYETT-COMPO - "THE KEEPER OF THE WIND" (COMMONWEALTH PUBLICATIONS) "The Keeper of the Wind" sounds good. The subtitle - "Love is often closer than you think" - may cause a frown or two. After the first few chapters the frowns will have deepened, caused by the two-dimensional characters, the sheer exaggeration of their emotions and Boyett-Compo's typical use of language. There is a lot of glowering, dropping of eyelashes, physical descriptions of beauty, quipping voices, touching of flesh and clashing of rumps. Within the span of one sentence, characters manage to traverse the gamut from absolute hardcore fury to the utmost tenderness. The book is the tale of Conar McGregor, Prince Regent of Serenia, and the love of his life, one Liza. She refuses to reveal her identity nor her place of birth. Their love blossoms and flourishes, with spicy language here and there. Alas, Conar is betrothed to a supposedly nasty-looking princess of a neighbouring country. The minute you read about Liza's adamance about not revealing her place of birth nor more than just her calling name, the remainder of the book already begins to picture itself. There was a certain element of satisfaction when, after almost 500 pages, the picture I had formed was proved to be quite right. Despite the heavy romantic quality of the story and the rather over-the-top narration, I did enjoy the book. Perhaps my motivation was wrong, but I flew through the pages in order to see if I'd properly predicted the outcome. Also, it is quite easy to identify with the main characters. Despite their flatness, the characters are extremely human. Boyett-Compo is a master at picturing inter-human relationships. Although there are sufficient aspects of this novel that can be criticised, fact is that I did think it was a riveting read.

Danny: Charlee, could you introduce yourself to German readers? Who you are, your likes and dislikes, where you come from etc.
Charlotte:
Danny: Why and how did your career as an author start? Is your writing career of influence on your private life?
Charlotte: My writing career began doing movie, book and play reviews for one of zillionaire Warren Buffet's newspapers in Omaha, Nebraska. My first novel was published in mass market paperback in 1996 so my parents were able to see it before they died in 1997. I will always be grateful they were able to see my dream realized. My father was as excited by my first royalty check as I was! I had a book…In the Wind's Eye…being pubbed as a serial on a Southern website until it was purchased by DLSIJ Press. My first two ebooks…NightWind and BloodWind…were published by Dark Star Publications in 1998. Since then, I've had 16 other novels published by Amber Quill Press, Hard Shell Word Factory, Twilight Times Books and one soon to be released from Ellora's Cave.
Most people in my church aren't even aware that I am a published writer. Those who do know either ignore that little bit of information or pretend it isn't true. The folks in Iowa are a bit strange in that they don't like anyone to 'make' it where they haven't. Notoriety is looked down upon by the

Write Byte The Pinnochio Syndrome (March 21, 1998)
Author Charlotte Boyett-Compo recently sent me this piece on the importance of being a good liar. Keep tongue firmly in cheek while reading, and I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Warning: If you have never told a fib; fudged on your taxes; told a little white lie to get out of trouble; lied about your age; colored your hair; or forged your significant other's signature to a piece of paper (read check), go no further. You are perfect and have no business consorting with the rest of us mortals. As a child, I sat at the knee of my Cherokee-Irish grandfather and listened with wide-eyed wonder to the glorious stories he could spin. Some made me laugh, but most made me shiver all the way to my curled-up toes and that, after all, had been his intent. He whispered engrossing tales of dark, eerie graveyards and ghostly forms floating above the moss-draped granite tombs; of talking cats who issued dire warnings to human as they carried old Negro women to their rest at the local haunted church; of dead men sitting bolt upright on their cooling boards during the wake. (I shudder even now thinking of that last image because he swore he actually saw that happen! But then again, he said he saw a twenty foot tall goat eating scuppernog in the cemetery late one evening.) Now, there are those with logical minds who could explain away every tale my PaPa ever told me:

Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence First torn apart by her parents, then by a destiny they cannot control, Bronwyn McGregor and Sean Cullin face virtually insurmountable odds to find a life together. As young as eleven years, Sean would have done anything, accepted any punishment, to protect Bronnie. Her parents hoped she and Sean would loose interest in one another; instead, their love only increased over time. She’s the daughter of a doctor and well-respected family; he’s the son of an alcoholic butcher known to beat his wife and son. Then she turns sixteen, and he turns eighteen, and her father serves the ultimatum that they must not see one another. Despite his desire to be with Bronnie, destiny takes Sean overseas where he enters a dangerous world. Soon he learns he is a Reaper. His bond with Bronnie is eternal because, like wolves, Reapers only bond once. As Sean struggles with the loss of the love of his life, Bronnie likewise mourns. Unknowingly, her grief calls a Nightwind. Bronnie is the last of the McGregor women bound to the Nightwind by grief and history. Now only fate and perseverance can determine who will win Bronwyn McGregor. As painful and destructive events unfold, destiny threatens to keep the Reaper and Bronnie apart forever. Unlike many of her novels, Charlotte Boyett-Compo sets BLACKWIND firmly in the present, although it does have an unusual plot twist firmly linking it to many years in the past. Fans of NIGHTWIND will recognize the mythological and familial ties to BLACKWIND, and enjoy learning more of the Nightwinds. Fans of BLOODWIND and DARKWIND will likewise recognize reapers, and enjoy the historical explanation of what brought Reapers to earth. Indeed, the blending of the two series

Interviewer: Lida Quillen Does your creativity express itself in ways other than writing? Well, I tried being a cereal killer, but it got too messy. I tried gardening, but the only things I grew with profusion were weeds… dandelions being my specialty. I lent my hand to painting but after I couldn't get the window up, I decided that craft wasn't for me. After I sewed the sleeve of my blouse to the skirt I was making, I realized being a seamstress was out of the question. And I got so wrapped up in the macramé I fell down the stairs so that didn't work for me, either. I can't be trusted not to run with scissors so scherenschnitte is a no-no for me. Likewise I'm not allowed to have sharp objects so knitting is out. I am thinking of taking up cake design, but that will have to wait until we remodel the kitchen and that won't be until we get the check from the insurance company and we won't get that until the fire marshal signs off on the "Cherries Jubliee" disaster. It may be awhile. Do you feel you were creative, even as a child?

Charlotte Boyett-Compo is a multi-published speculative fiction author of over 32 novels, 13 of which are currently available at bookstores worldwide and online. Her first nine books are the WindLegend Saga, published by Hard Shell Word Factory in print and e-book formats. She was recently profiled in Writer's Digest's Publishing Success Magazine and just won Inscription Magazine's 2000 Engraver Award as Favorite E-Author of the Year. Her novels have won several awards. She is also a senior editor at Sharpwriter.com and does several monthly columns for websites such as All About Murder, Romance Foretold, and Writer's Exchange. Why do you write?
You started with subsidy publishing. Why, and how did it work out for you?
How did you get into e-books?
Penny Hussey of Romance Foretold held a chat for me back in 1998. At the end of the chat, after everyone but she had left the room, we talked about my book and the others that I had written; the problem I had had with Commonwealth and subsequently Sovereign... another publisher with whom others and I shared legal action; Penny's belief in what I write and my determination to succeed. She told me about a new venture she and Gina Haldane were forming in which electronically-bound books would be put up for sale. I told her to keep me in mind and she asked me to submit a couple of my novels for consideration.
