William Rufus Boyd, Jr., banker and chairman of the War Council of the Petroleum Industry during World War II, qv the son of Judge William R. and Lizzie (Self) Boyd, was born in Fairfield, Freestone County, Texas, on January 7, 1885. He attended Fairfield public schools and after high school was employed as a printer at the Fairfield Recorder . He then attended Metropolitan Business College in Dallas and later studied law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He received his law license at age nineteen. Boyd was subsequently appointed secretary to Congressman Scott Field, qv who represented Freestone and Limestone counties. He served for two years in Washington before moving in 1906 back to Freestone County, where he became the first mayor of Teague at the age of twenty-one. He soon moved to Eddy, McLennan County, where he organized the Farmers and Merchants State Bank and was its president for two years. He was the Texas representative of the National Citizens League for the Promotion of a Sound Banking System and later served as a member of the Dallas investment firm of Philip, Boyd, and Company. At the outbreak of World War I qv he served in Chicago as the regional manager of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. After the war he was the national campaign manager for the League to Enforce Peace, an organization led by former President William Howard Taft, which sought support for United States membership in the League of Nations.

ARMADILLO By William Boyd At a time when the competition is admittedly pretty weak, William Boyd has established a reputation as one of the bright lights of English comic fiction. Armadillo , which refers here to a "little armed man" and not an edentate mammal, deals with the adventures of Lorimer Black (formerly Milomre Blocj), a loss adjuster for a London insurance company. The plot involves, in no particular order, a hanged man, a dream analysis clinic, an insurance scam, Lorimer's pursuit of a married woman (Flavia Malinverno), and a comedy of manners starring an upper-class twit named Torquil Helvoir-Jayne. Along the way we are treated to selections from Lorimer's Book of Transfiguration , a journal filled with quotations from Gerard de Nerval and digressions on the philosophy of insurance. The silly names and overly complex plot indicate that Boyd belongs to the group of writers, sometimes called postmodern, who take a tongue-in-cheek attitude toward the novel. The writing itself has its ups and downs. Boyd's sense of place is surprisingly poor (his London is scarcely more than a city map), but his dialogue has the fast-paced wit typical of the best of his contemporary hipsters. A novel as light as this can be read in an afternoon, and most of the time it will be enjoyed. Unfortunately, this is as far as it goes.

Hopalong Cassidy and William Boyd When actor William Boyds career escalated, Hopalong Cassidy rode to the rescue, creating a new movie cowboy. An interviewer once asked the late actor Peter Sellers to tell him a little about himself. Sellers, who specialized playing a bevy bizarre characters, was unable to answer the question satisfactorily. He was so enmeshed in his acting that the real-life Peter Sellers could only relate to the characters he was playing. William Boyd found himself in a similar situation except, in his case, only one character was involved a fictitious, black hatted, white maned cowboy that absorbed nearly the entire personality of the man who portrayed him on the screen. Boyd could not have been happier. At one time there were two William Boyds in the movies. The first was a successful star of the silent screen and was well on his way to making a name for himself in talkies. The second was only semi-successful as an actor. One night the police raided the home of the second William Boyd and discovered a den of iniquity gambling, illegal liquor and pornographic films. bodyOffer(19363) The Hearst newspaper chain printed a story about the raid, but got the two Boyds mixed up. The picture of William Boyd, the silent movie star, was placed on the story instead of the real culprit. Although hasty retractions were printed, the first William Boyds career was virtually destroyed. He then began a long slide toward obscurity until rescued by the dashing foreman of the Bar-20 Ranch four years later.

WILLIAM CLARENCE BOYD, JR. Crip Boyd was born of pioneer stock in Winnsboro to W.C. and Elizabeth Lyles Boyd. He married Frances Ancrum Boykin and was survived by her and their children, Ann Boyd Dunlap and W.C. Boyd, III. He was a graduate of Furman University and the University of South Carolina Law School. He was engaged in general practice in Columbia for over 45 years working with R. Beverley Sloan and Benet, Shand and McGowan. In 1915, with John E. Bruton and John H. Lumpkin, he formed the firm which became Boyd, Knowlton, Tate and Finlay. He served as President of the Richland County Bar, as a member of the South Carolina and American Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society and the United States Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He served as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve in World War II, as President of the Columbia Cotillion Club and was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. He served his clients ably, soundly and diligently. As "beloved, esteemed and respected by the lawyers of this State as any man in the history of the Bar," he epitomized the high standards and traditions of the profession he loved.
