The scrapbook format lends a publication a whimsical flavor and its creator the opportunity to experiment with material other than words to legitimize impressions or to dress up information. Executed well, the technique is referred to as collage. From the appearance of this book, one could characterize Nutting as an exceptional collage artist. It’s utterly enjoyable to page through this book, delighting at the interplay between Nutting’s impressionistic photographs and the various written messages—the letters, captions, first-person narrative, passages from Bowles’ journals. The experience can be likened to viewing an old scrapbook that reeks with the scent of a flower or two pressed between its pages. On the contrary, Nutting’s intriguing collages display an obsession with a country (Morocco), a book ( The Sheltering Sky ), and a man (Paul Bowles) that fueled a great friendship and a long-lasting adventure. She met him in 1986 and they were friends (although at times Nutting seems to imagine they were lovers, and on more than one occasion records her jealousy of Jane Bowles) until his death in 1999. The portrait of Bowles she offers is that of a sensual, vital, and mysterious man, interesting to the very end. —

Paul Bowles reads this classic suite of Moroccan kif stories that he recorded in Tangier, Morocco, in the Fall of 1978. Previously released as a 2 LP recording in 1981, and long sold out, these stories are now being made available again as a 2 CD audiobook. Bowles' accompanying essay for this recording ( which is printed in the included booklet and from which we have excerpted the fragment above)
"The new CD release, Paul Bowles Reads A Hundred Camels in the Courtyard . . . the results are almost as pristine as if you were sitting in Paul's lounge in the Immeuble Itessa, a fire crackling in the hearth, a long sebsi of Mrabet's Special Blend going around the room.
Paul Bowles may be gone to an oasis far beyond the rolling dunes, but "A Friend of the World," "The Wind at Beni Midar," "He of the Assembly" and "The Story of Lahcen and Idir" live on in Cadmus' wonderful CDs, complete with a fiery painting of the Djmaa el Fna by Bowles' friend, the late Brion Gysin.
Our master's voice, sibilant and whistling with age carried the inspirational authority of an old sage relating essential lore around the dying embers of a campfire in the Sahara. Something about hearing his tales rather than reading them carried the qualities of the high itself. The CDs are another way into the brilliance and clarity of Bowles' Moroccan visions. . . . Take my word for it, they are worth the journey."

About Paul Bowles Paul Bowles, who died in 1999 at the age of 88 in Tangier, Moroccowhere he lived for over fifty yearswas the quintessential iconoclast.
He left the United States for good in the 1940s after building an illustrious career as a composer, rejected the heroic identity requisite to expatriate American writers and buried himself in the culture of North Africa. A writer's writer, his associations span the elite cultural circles of this century. At twenty, he was an intimate of Gertrude Stein and Aaron Copeland; at thirty the peer of Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal; at forty, literary godfather to Beat writers William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. His unorthodox marriage to writer Jane Bowles-both were gay and had significant relationships with others throughout their marriage-is legendary. Together they formed the magnet which drew an extraordinary group of writers and artists to the exotic freedoms of Morocco before independence. In this definitive film biography, the notoriously laconic and reclusive Bowles finally speaks out on the subjects he has remained silent about over the years. Lying in bed at his home in Tangier and smoking kif with an elegant black cigarette holder, he reflects on his life, his work, Jane, love and his friends with unprecedented candour. At 87 years old, his tone is almost omniscient, as though he is surveying both life and death from some lofty interim vantage point. The film is built around this self-revealing monologue, with various voices breaking in to comment, dispute and clarify. Chief among these is William Burroughs, who acts as a sort of commentator on Bowles' version of his life.

Paul Bowles is perhaps best known as the author of The Sheltering Sky, the popular novel that was later turned into a feature film in 1990 starring John Malkovich and Debra Winger.
Paul Bowles on Music, co-edited by UCSC lecturer Irene Herrmann, is a collection of music criticism by Bowles, written between 1935 and 1946. Photo: Jim MacKenzie But few people realize that the prolific writer thought of himself primarily as a composer of music.
A new book co-edited by UC Santa Cruz lecturer Irene Herrmann, Paul Bowles on Music, The volume is a collection of music criticism by Bowles, written between 1935 and 1946, that has never before been compiled in book form.
It contains reviews Bowles penned as the music critic for the New York Herald Tribune, as well as complete reprints of essays on music that he contributed to Modern Music
The incisive and often humorous pieces cover classical, film, popular, and ethnic music, including important premieres of works by Copland, Cage, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. They range from reviews of top jazz concerts of the day in Harlem, to debut recitals by emigre virtuosos, to performances by Frank Sinatra, in a compilation that highlights an extraordinary era of American musical history.
After that first encounter, Herrmann regularly traveled to visit Bowles at his apartment in Tangier, Morocco, every summer until his death in 1999. Bowles designated Herrmann as the inheritor of his musical estate in 1996.

Existentialist author Paul Bowles dies

Paul Bowles: friend of Copland, Stein and Cocteau
The American author and composer Paul Bowles, best known for The Sheltering Sky, has died in Morocco aged 88. He died of a heart attack on Thursday in the port of Tangiers, where he had lived for most of his life. He had been in hospital with cardiac problems since 7 November. He was the last survivor of a whole generation of American writers which included William S Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. Although not a 'beat' himself, Bowles was heavily influenced by the introspection which marked their works. Wealthy family His existentialist masterpiece, The Sheltering Sky, the film version of which was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, details the destruction of an American couple in the soporific decadence of 1930s Morocco, drawing upon his own experiences as a long-term American expatriate in Tangiers. Paul Frederick Bowles was born in New York City in 1910 into a wealthy New England family. During his early years an aunt and uncle introduced him to the esoterica of yoga, theosophy and transcendentalism, themes which he would explore further in later life.

http://www.goodbyemag.com/nov99/bowles.html
The Failure of Paul Bowles
By Matthew Sharpe Bowles’ explication of his own process does not detract from the power and beauty of “A Distant Episode” or his other stories or novels, but it does demonstrate how almost invariably annoying it is when writers discuss their own work. What’s more, the story, the process by which Bowles claims to have written it, and the sixteen-year-old boy’s reaction to it serve to elucidate the not-so-appealing “point of view” of Bowles and the post-war generation of artsy bohemians and middle class hipsters he inspired. As for Bowles’ involvement with the CP, it was highly aestheticized, to say the least: “We tried to compensate for our lack of devotion to Marxism-Leninism by seeing every Russian film that came to New York.” He was able to participate in the Federal Theater Project by finagling his way onto public relief, thus becoming the prototypical welfare queen.
