Paul Bowles in Morocco Acclaimed writer and composer Paul Bowles is spotlighted in this intriguing documentary. Leaving the United States in the 1940s, Bowles eventually settled in Morocco. The filmmaker finds this urbane and fascinating man in Tangier, his longtime home. Reading passages from his novels, recounting stories from his past, visiting his favorite haunts and philosophizing about the Moroccan people and their lifestyle, Bowles is captivating. Bowles' homosexuality isn't mentioned; indeed, the film is more about Moroccan culture than about the writer himself. Paul Bowles The Complete Outsider The fascinating life of American expatriate cult writer Paul Bowles, including his marriage to lesbian author Jane Bowles, is candidly revealed in this documentary filmed in Tangier, Morocco, his home for most of his adult life. He recounts his early career in America and life in his adopted land, and fleetingly touches on his own homosexuality. Of special interest to fans is his discussion of his early work in classical composition; he has in fact written four operas. A mystical character, reserved to the point of being cryptic, complex and contradictory and quietly at peace with himself. "A tantalizing sketch of the legendary expatriate."

Paul Bowles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Born December 30 Jamaica, Queens , New York to Rena and Claude Bowles. Composer author , and traveler. One of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century, Paul Bowles became iconoclast of the Tangerinos American and European expatriates centered in Tangier Morocco . Bowles had been a part of Gertrude Stein 's literary and artistic circle in France. On the advice of Stein, Bowles first visited Tangier in 1931 with Aaron Copland , later returning to New York where he wrote numerous musical pieces for the theater. In 1938, he married author Jane Auer , and they were prominent among the literary figures of New York throughout the 1940s. He studied music with Aaron Copland and worked as a music critic under Virgil Thomson at the New York Herald Tribune in the 1940s. Paul Bowles moved permanently to Tangier, Morocco in 1947, and Jane Bowles followed him there in 1948. Prominent literary friends visited them there including Truman Capote Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal . He traveled extensively throughout Morocco and recorded Moroccan music which is now housed in the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington. In the 1950s Bowles bought the tiny island of Taprobane, off the coast of Celylon (now Sri Lanka), and he wrote much of his novel

14. Bowles Paul: Hoog Boven De Wereld
Bowles, Paul Hoog boven de wereld. Het is geen whodunnit , maar een spannende en beklemmende whatshappeningreally . Paul Bowles Website van Gotze Kalsbeek.
http://www.boekgrrls.nl/BgDiversen/Aanbevelingen/BowlesPaul.htm

Biographical Note
The American composer and author Paul Frederic Bowles was born in New York City on December 30, 1910. Bowles was published at age seventeen, abandoned college, and in 1929 began his life of travels with a trip to Paris, where he hoped to establish himself as a poet. Back in New York in 1930, he studied composition with Aaron Copland, whom he also accompanied to Yaddo, Paris, Berlin, and Tangier. With the support of Copland and Virgil Thomson, Bowles found work in New York writing incidental music and scores for ballet and theater. His successful career as a composer took off in the Depression with work for the Federal Theater Project (including music for Orson Welles's Horse Eats Hat ) and the Federal Music Project. Bowles became one of the preeminent composers of American theater music, producing works for William Saroyan, Tennessee Williams, and others. In the last decade, a resurgence of interest in Bowles's music has culminated in a number of major concerts and performances in the United States and Europe. In addition, a new generation of musicians has released several well-received recordings of Bowles's compositions.

Moroccan Sojourn A Visit with Paul Bowles
If someone is really, seriously interested in Morocco, they will sooner or later find out about Paul Bowles. For the ones who have never heard of Paul Bowles, here is a little summary: Born in NYC in 1910, he starts writing poetry and stories as a young boy. He runs off to Paris in his first year of college. / Returns to Paris a short while later and meets Gertrude Stein/ Studies music under Aaron Copland/The two visit Morocco together, on the recommendation of Gertrude Stein./Adventures and misadventures in Tangier and Fez./ He starts composing music, in particular he composes scores for plays like Tennessee Williams' "Glass Menagerie"/ Marries Jane Auer/ Continues to compose music/ Travels a lot and likes it/ Feels too tied to NYC due to the music and changes genres/ Writes " The Sheltering Sky" which is published in 1949 to some acclaim/ Moves to Tangier/ Tangier becomes his home, and to my knowledge he is still there.

At least, on the 9th of October 1995, he certainly was there. This is one of those stories I like to hear, and in this case tell, because it so makes the point that if you really want something, if it is important to you, it is bound to happen.

Biographical Sketch
Paul Frederic Bowles, born December 30, 1910, in New York City, was the only child of Claude Dietz and Rena Winnewisser Bowles. Bowles began writing short stories and composing music as a child, and he was only a teenager when his surrealist poetry was published in the magazine Transition . Bowles briefly attended the University of Virginia but dropped out in 1929 and moved to Paris where he met and became friends with Gertrude Stein. This began over forty years of nearly constant traveling for Bowles, who once said of himself that he was addicted to movement. He returned to the University of Virginia in the spring of 1930, but left again after one semester to study music, first under Aaron Copland in Berlin (1930-32) and then with Virgil Thomson in Paris (1933-34). During these years he also made his first visit, at Stein's suggestion, to Tangier, Morocco. In 1937, Bowles met author and playwright Jane Auer; they were married the following year. The Bowleses eventually settled in Tangier, although both traveled often throughout North Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. At one point Paul even owned Taprobane, an island off the coast of Sri Lanka.

Paul Bowles
Paul Bowles was born in New York City on December 30, 1910. He was an only child and exhibited early the existentialist's sense of alienation. Who was his father? The patriarchal figures in his stories are often brutal. The true stories of Bowles paint the picture of a cold, New York-Edwardian man as his father but not exactly cruel or abusive. Paul Bowles studied with composer Aaron Copland. Bowles went on to produce a number of still-produced mostly-orchestral pieces. Later he wrote music for the work of Tennessee Williams, a friend and supporter of the talents of both Paul and his wife Jane. In his early creative years, prose interested him less than music. When Gertrude Stein told him he was "not a real poet," he agreed. At the time he only aspired to be a musician. On the personal front, Bowles considered himself a Romantic in the creative but not the sexual sense. He hated, for example, D.H. Lawrence's view of sex as magical, even religious. Sex and gender distinctions were interesting if irrelevent. Bowles believed that somewhere out there was a magic place or state of mind, a place that would deliver them into the ecstasy of personal revelation. Like Sartre in La Nausea , he dreamed of finding it. To a large at least symbolic degree, Bowles found what he was looking for in his first trip to
