    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Erma Louise (Harris) Bombeck (1927-1996) was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for a newspaper column that depicted suburban home life in the second half of the 20th century. Born in Dayton, Ohio , Bombeck graduated from the University of Dayton in 1949 with a degree in English. She started her career in 1949 as a reporter for the Ohio Journal Herald, but after marrying school administrator Bill Bombeck, a college friend, she left the job and raised three children. As the children grew she started writing At Wit's End , telling self-deprecating tales about the life of a housewife. It debuted in the Kettering-Oakwood Times in 1964. She was paid $3 per column. Growing popularity led At Wit's End to be nationally syndicated in 1965, and eventually it ran twice a week in more than 700 newspapers. The column was collected in many best-selling books, and her fame was such that a television sitcom was based on her. The series

(The form of the word may tempt one to think that "suburb" was originally a shortened form of the adjective "sub-urban," but the very thorough histories of English words found in the Oxford English Dictionary appear to indicate otherwise. The city sits in the Miami River Valley, north of Cincinnati, south of Toledo, west of Columbus, and east of Richmond, Indiana, at the confluence of the Great Miami River, the Stillwater River, the Mad River, and Wolf Creek. After the flood of 1913, numerous water-control dams and levees were constructed to control these rivers.

    Erma Bombeck, one of the most popular newspaper columnists in the United States and the author of numerous bestselling books, died in San Francisco on Monday, April 22, 1996 from complications following a kidney transplant earlier in the month. Bombeck had been ill for some time. In 1992, after she underwent a mastectomy, her kidneys failed and she began dialysis at her home in Arizona. She suffered from polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary complaint. Even with her illness, Bombeck continued her weekly schedule of housework, her source for the hilarious columns and books for which she was widely loved. "My type of humor is almost pure identification," she once told The New York Times . "A housewife reads my columns and says, 'But that's happened to me! I know just what she's talking about!' "If I didn't do my own housework, then I have no business writing about it. I spend 90 percent of my time living scripts and 10 percent writing them." Erma Bombeck's books include Motherhood: The Second Oldest Profession , which spent an entire year in the Number One spot on The New York Times bestseller list;

    Erma Bombeck
    “It goes without saying that you should never have more children than you have car windows.” Often poignant, often funny, often true—Erma Bombeck’s observations of life, especially that of the suburban housewife, has made women (and some men) smile for several generations. It was not so much that Erma was humorous but rather her daily and weekly editorials reflected what millions of mothers, wives, and career women were going through just in the daily juggling act of life. Starting out in a local newspaper, her column was eventually printed in 600 newspapers across the country. Her humour books have included “The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank,” “I Lost Everything in the Postnatal Depression,” and “When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It’s Time to Go Home.” Her

    10. To Erma Bombeck On Mothers' Day
    Midlife Moments columnist Mike Bellah pays tribute to bombeck.
    http://www.bestyears.com/ermabombeck.html
    with Mike Bellah She was the funniest mother in America and, quite possibly, the most insightful. For over 30 years Erma Bombeck made us laugh; she also made us think. "I never ironed my husband’s pajamas. And if I raised my hand to wipe the hair out of my children’s eyes, they’d flinch and call their attorney."
    Erma Bombeck " I love my mother for all the times she said absolutely nothing."
    -Erma Bombeck To Erma Bombeck on Mothers’ Day She was the funniest mother in America and, quite possibly, the most insightful. For over 30 years Erma Bombeck made us laugh; she also made us think. On this Mothers’ Day, I want to pay tribute to my favorite columnist who died two years ago last month at a much-too-young 69. And what better way to honor Bombeck than to share her own words on her own favorite subject, motherhood. What kind of mother would . . . ? Bombeck liked to poke fun at those who overly idealized mothers, people (usually mothers-to-be or first-time mothers blessed with a compliant child) whose unrealistic and perfectionistic notions encouraged them to condemn those who did not measure up. Quoting the words of one such pharisee, Bombeck wrote, "Did you see the story in the paper about the woman who forgot one of her children in a laundromat restroom? She dares call herself a mother! How disgusting! What kind of mother would . . .?"

    1927 - 1996 Her words will live on Erma Bombeck was one of the funniest and most sarcastic writers of our time. I always enjoyed reading her columns in the newspaper so much. I think I bought every book she ever wrote (12, I believe) and my personal favorite is "The Grass is always Greener over the Septic Tank" followed closely by "If Life's a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?" Recently there have been some cute and clever emails going around about a conversation between Erma and Martha Stewart. I have to say that I identify much more closely to Erma, than to Martha. Sometimes people think my kids are kinda "smart mouths". I have to say that that probably comes from being raised by a rather sarcastic mother. Sarcasm is one of my favorite forms of humor, and if I get sarcastic with you while smiling - you can be sure it means I like you and am teasing you. My sarcasm is reserved only to those people that I like. Silence is what I offer those I DON'T like. :) I have been collecting little bits of Erma's more quotable quotes over time from newspapers, T-shirts, calenders, you name it. So, I probably really don't have permission to use this material, but I will use it until someone tells me they OWN the copywrite to it.

    Comments on marriage, coffee, housework, mothers, advice, the empty nest, graduation, baseball, and travel.
    http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/9599/quotes.html
    Quotes from Erma Bombeck Spend at least one Mother's Day with your respective mothers before you decide on marriage. If a man gives his mother a gift certificate for a flu shot, dump him. My kids always perceived the bathroom as a place where you wait it out until all the groceries are unloaded from the car. Making coffee has become the great compromise of the decade. It's the only thing "real" men do that doesn't seem to threaten their masculinity. To women, it's on the same domestic entry level as putting the spring back into the toilet-tissue holder or taking a chicken out of the freezer to thaw. I don't know why no one ever thought to paste a label on the toilet-tissue spindle giving 1-2-3 directions for replacing the tissue on it. Then everyone in the house would know what Mama knows. Giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. Then the mother is born. Housework is a treadmill from futility to oblivion with stop offs at tedium and counter productivity. There's a territorial ritual to an aerobics class. I entered a class for the first time a few years ago and ended up where no one wanted to be...in the front row next to the mirror. It was three years before I could work my way to the back row.
