Louise Bogan
Born in Livermore, Maine, Bogan attended private school in New Hampshire and, after her family moved to Boston, the Girls’ Latin School, graduating in 1915. Later, she remembered her five years at the school—renowned for its rigorous classical curriculum—as stimulating and happy. By age fifteen she considered herself a writer. However, having completed one year at Boston University, she married an army officer and accompanied him to Panama, where they had a daughter. After his death in 1920, Bogan lived in New York, supporting herself with jobs in a bookstore and at the public library. During these difficult, but exciting years, she frequented literary gatherings in Greenwich Village and met writers associated with Alfred Kreymborg and his magazine, Others

BIOGRAPHY A native of Maine, Louise Bogan grew up in an unsettled household owing, in part, to her mother's marital infidelity. After her education at Boston Girls' Latin School, Bogan attended Boston University between 1915-1916 when she married Curt Alexander, an army officer, with whom she had a daughter. Four years later, Alexander's death left her a single parent with uncertain means. Moving to New York City, Bogan began her life as a writer in earnest, collaborating with such major modernist writers as William Carlos Williams, Malcolm Cowley, Lola Ridge, John Reed, Marianne Moore, and Edmund Wilson, who coached Bogan in professional reviewing that gave her an income. Her first volume of verse Body

I was from USA, and I lived from 1897-1970. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? My influences included Theodore Roethke Louise Bogan was born in Livermore Falls, Maine, in 1897. She attended Boston Girls' Latin School and spent one year at Boston University. She married in 1916 and was widowed in 1920. In 1925, she married her second husband, the poet Raymond Holden, whom she divorced in 1937. Her poems were published in the New Republic, the Nation, Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, Scribner's and Atlantic Monthly. For thirty-eight years, she reviewed poetry for The New Yorker.
Bogan found the confessional poetry of Robert Lowell and John Berryman distasteful and self-indulgent. With the poets whose work she admired, however, such as Theodore Roethke, she was extremely supportive and encouraging. She was reclusive and disliked talking about herself, and for that reason details are scarce regarding her private life. The majority of her poetry was written in the earlier half of her life when she published Body of This Death (1923) and Dark Summer (1929) and The Sleeping Fury (1937). She subsequently published volumes of her collected verse, and The Blue Estuaries: Poems 1923-1968, an overview of her life's work in poetry. Her ability is unique in its strict adherence to lyrical forms, while maintaining a high emotional pitch: she was preoccupied with exploring the perpetual disparity of heart and mind. She died in New York City in 1970.

Louise Bogan The work of Louise Bogan (1897-1970) shares the restrained, intellectual style and traditional elements of English Metaphysical poets, while retaining a sense of modernity and the personal. Click to Order Bogan's Blue Estuaries (soft $). Although her first book was published in 1923, she wrote throughout her life, with her last book published the year of her death in 1970. Bogan was also an accomplished literary critic, known for her objectivity and fairness. While "Women" was written early in Bogan's career, it exemplifies her strength of combining the personal with the public. In doing so, she deals with the political issue of feminism through irony (in which she states things about women she obviously doesn't believe). This irony is further heightened through her use of traditional poetic images (such as "cell of their hearts", "red winter grass", and "Snow water going down under culverts." Only in the last stanza does Bogan begin to reveal the poem's true center: that when a new bride is carried over the door-sill in the arms of her husband, she is in a sense losing/taking her life, or at least an aspect of it that "They should let ... go by."
