Louise Bogan (1897-1970)
A Tale
This youth too long has heard the break Of waters in a land of change. He goes to see what suns can make From soil more indurate and strange.
He cuts what holds his days together And shuts him in, as lock on lock: The arrowed vane announcing weather, The tripping racket of a clock;
Seeking, I think, a light that waits Still as a lamp upon a shelf, A land with hills like rocky gates Where no sea leaps upon itself.
But he will find that nothing dares To be enduring, save where, south Of hidden deserts, torn fire glares On beauty with a rusted mouth,
Where something dreadful and another Look quietly upon each other. Notes ] Bogan placed this poem at the beginning of all her collected poems.
] indurate: hard, obdurate.

Quotations
The art of one period cannot be approached through the attitudes (emotional or intellectual) of another. Because language is the carrier of ideas, it is easy to believe that it should be very little else than such a carrier. But childhood prolonged, cannot remain a fairyland. It becomes a hell. But is there any reason to believe that a woman's spiritual fibre is less sturdy than a man's? Is it not possible for a woman to come to terms with herself if not with the world; to withdraw more and more, as time goes on, her own personality from her productions; to stop childish fears of death and eschew charming rebellions against facts? I cannot believe that the inscrutable universe turns on an axis of suffering; surely the strange beauty of the world must somewhere rest on pure joy! I don't like quintessential certitude. It is almost impossible for the poetess, once laurelled, to take off the crown for good or to reject values and taste of those who tender it. Once form has been smashed, it has been smashed for good, and once a forbidden subject has been released it has been released for good. The intellectual is a middle-class product; if he is not born into the class he must soon insert himself into it, in order to exist. He is the fine nervous flower of the bourgeoisie.

    The instructor needs to explain Bogan's often distancing herself from the poem's ideas, creating what Adrienne Rich has called a "mask" or "code." Her use of the more traditional lyric form (though not in most of the poems selected for the anthology) raises questions about her relationship to the experimental verse that poets of the prior generation and those of her own were writing. Bogan seems quite accessibleexcept in poems like "The Sleeping Fury" and "After the Persian," which require calling students' attention to language, imagery, contrasts. Introducing Bogan's more general literary careerand perhaps ideas from her essays, reviews, and Ruth Limmer's edited autobiographywill enrich students' understanding of the difficulties women faced as writers and the extraordinary success some achieved as editors (cf. Harriet Monroe, Moore ) and reviewers.

    Louise Bogan Louise Bogan was an American poet and critic. She was quite reticent about her personal life, so many of its facts are unknown to us. However, it is known that she was the child of a difficult marriage, in which her mother had numerous affairs about which she wasn't particularly discreet. Bogan herself was married twice. Her second marriage, to writer Raymond Holden, ended in divorce. Bogan sometimes suffered from extreme depression, and at times she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital to recover. She had one child, a daughter.
    Bogan's body of poetry, though relatively small, demonstrates a exacting eye. Her final volume, The Blue Estuaries: Poems 1923-1968 , was Bogan's personal selection of her best poetry, and is the only volume still in print.

    Louise Bogan, it will be noted, lived to the age of 72. Her last book of poetry, The Blue Estuaries: Poems 1923-1968 was published the year before she died, and collected in one volume all the poems she had selected for, as they say, her personal oeuvre. Throughout her life Bogan exerted almost complete control over which of her poems were published and which were not; her habit with each book, beginning with her first book Body of This Death (1923), was to exclude any previously published poems which no longer met her standards. Thus, Body of This Death included only one of five poems that had originally been published in the Chicago-based magazine Poetry just two years before. The following book
