Judy Blume When I was growing up, I dreamed about becoming a cowgirl, a detective, a spy, a great actress, or a ballerina. Not a dentist, like my father, or a homemaker, like my mother and certainly not a writer, although I always loved to read. I didn't know anything about writers. It never occurred to me they were regular people and that I could grow up to become one, even though I loved to make up stories inside my head.
I made up stories while I bounced a ball against the side of our house. I made up stories playing with paper dolls. And I made them up while I practiced the piano by pretending to give piano lessons. I even kept a notebook with the names of my pretend students and how they were doing. I always had an active imagination. But I never wrote down any of my stories. And I never told anyone about them.
When I grew up, my need for storytelling didn't go away. So when my own two children started preschool I began to write and I've been writing ever since! My characters live inside my head for a long time before I actually start a book about them. Then, they become so real to me I talk about them at the dinner table as if they are real. Some people consider this weird. But my family understands.
Many of my books are set in New Jersey because that's where I was born and raised. I lived there until my kids finished elementary school. Then we moved to New Mexico, the setting for

Haar eerste boek verscheen in 1969. Ze zit in verschillende schrijversverenigingen. Ze is een tegenstander van censuur, en zit zich daar ook actief voor in. Ze woont met haar derde man in New York. Boeken: Bent u daar God? Ik ben 't, Margaret

Judy Blume
By Seymour "Sy" Brody After the rejections notices stopped coming to Judy Blume, she became one of the most popular writers of young adult novels. Her ability to understand and relate to the problems and human foibles of kids brought her this success. Blume was the daughter of Esther and Rudolph Sussman, a dentist, who was born in Elizabeth, N.J., on February 12, 1938. After graduating high school, she entered New York University. Her two goals in attending college were to obtain a degree and to find a husband. She met John Blume, a young ambitious lawyer, and married him in her junior year. After graduating NYU, she had a daughter, Randy, and a son, Larry. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1975. While she was comfortable being a suburban housewife and mother, Blume felt that something was lacking in her life. After a few attempts at other activities, she began writing stories and books for children. After a few rejections and some writing courses at N.Y.U., she started selling her short stories to magazines while working on her novels. In 1969, she sold The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo to Riley and Lee, which was the beginning of a successful and long writing career.

Presenting Judy Blume provides the definitive study of Blume's life and work. Extensive interviews with Blume, her son, and her editor portray the working of a creative mind uniquely in touch with the young adult experience. As entertaining as it is informative, this comprehensive and accessible study, which inlcludes an analysis of each of Blume's books, a discussion of the issue of censorship, a detailed chronology of Blume's career, and an extensive bibliography, will be welcomed by every reader eager to know more about this immensely popular author. This was my first book and I was thrilled to be doing it. But I say now that I never would have begun it had I known how much work it was going to entail. The book is thirteen chapters long, and it was like writing thirteen masters theses. Still, I am so glad I wrote it. It set me on my way as a biography writer. Published by:

Yes, you obviously think quite highly of Blume and her writing. But that didn't stop you from choosing extremely critical comments to share or looking at the hard issues of her as a writer; for example, her use of the first person narrative. I learned so much about writing just reading this book. All of the analyses of her use of language, style, etc. really made me look at my own writing."

Issue#76:
Is Harry Potter Evil? by Judy Blume
Winter 1999-2000 Published in The New York Times
October 22, 1999 I happened to be in London last summer on the very day "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," the third book in the wildly popular series by J. K. Rowling, was published. I couldn't believe my good fortune. I rushed to the bookstore to buy a copy, knowing this simple act would put me up there with the best grandmas in the world. The book was still months away from publication in the United States, and I have an 8-year-old grandson who is a big Harry Potter fan. It's a good thing when children enjoy books, isn't it? Most of us think so. But like many children's books these days, the Harry Potter series has recently come under fire. In Minnesota, Michigan, New York, California and South Carolina, parents who feel the books promote interest in the occult have called for their removal from classrooms and school libraries. I knew this was coming. The only surprise is that it took so long as long as it took for the zealots who claim they're protecting children from evil (and evil can be found lurking everywhere these days) to discover that children actually like these books. If children are excited about a book, it must be suspect.
