Marianne Bluger (Photo: 1997, L. Neily) Marianne Bluger is an imagist lyric poet and the author of seven collections the latest of which, Scissor, Paper, Woman will be out in spring 2000 from Penumbra Press. She was born in Ottawa, lived in many Ontario small towns where her father taught school, and graduated in philosophy with distinction from McGill. She was married for some years to a Zen master by whom she had two children, Maji Raphael and Ahgyong Micheline. Bluger was Administrator of the Canadian Writers' Foundation for 24 years. She was co-founder in 1984 of Christians Against Apartheid, an Ottawa coalition working with the churches in Canada and South Africa. She is a founding director of Tabitha Canada which for the last several years has successfully initiated and supported work with the poorest of the poor in Cambodia. Marianne Bluger - What's New Photo by L. Neily, Marathon, TX - April 2003 Zen Mercies / Small Satoris, a tanka sequence, was editor John Barton's choice for the Winter 2003 issue of ARC, Canada's National Poetry Magazine. In the fall of 2003, Bluger judged the Diana Brebner poetry competition, sponsored by ARC, in Ottawa. First reviews for EARLY EVENING PIECES have been wonderful, and initial sales good. Among recent anthologies featuring Bluger's work: Basho Festival 2003 (Japan) - selection "in soft summer dark/resting my oars I glide/on floating stars". Redmoon Press, TANKA Anthology, winter 2003 Two new manuscripts; BORN TO BIRD (A Birder's Year in Verse) and MY FRIEND THE KINKAPOO, are ready for the publishers. Bluger's next project is a volume of portraits in verse. In July, Bluger and her husband travelled to the Maritimes and New England for family reasons and to birdwatch. She is working on several maritime poems and is increasingly absorbed with the interconnectedness of philosophy, politics, religion and poetry. She is fascinated with The Great Republic. Bluger judged the American Tanka Society annual poem competition with Tom Clausen. The adjudication notes she wrote were published in the society's newsletter.

The best Haiku poems in Marianne Bluger's new collection compress complex observations into a few perfectly chosen words. These Haiku combine Bluger's lyrical gifts of strong, musical language and unique, personal insight with a concentrated and disciplined form. The poems in this collection range over a broad spectrum of topics; from the poet’s reflections on people and places to nature. Her poem "Remembrance Day" is an example of Bluger’s best work. The poem offers the reader a rich understanding of the experience of war veterans. bagpipes wheeze through the cenotaph mist a thin line of vets In this short poem, the evokes the November mist as a memorial for the dead. The mist represents the spirits of the dead and evokes a sense of eternity. The also uses the sound of bagpipes to bring sound to the poem and to reinforce the theme of loss. She also uses a reference to bagpipes as a historical connection, and draws the reader in to the time period when Canadian men were sent off to war to the sound of a marching band. The "thin line of vets" is like a trickle of water on a rainy November street—insignificant against wet pavement. The thinness of this line of old veterans emphasizes their vulnerability in the face of time: they are few, and fading. The idea of thinness also suggests the frailness of people who nonetheless survived the overwhelming wars of the past century.
