Dawn Laker 2003/4 An Interview with... Lizzy Bluehorse
As frontwoman of Celtic/fusion/fiddle band Bluehorses, Liz Prendergast is 'on show' much of the time, and the band's music and image throw up a lot of intrigue and mystery. Liz agreed to answer some of my questions to clear some of the mist, and tell Roots Review what it means to be a part of Bluehorses. DL As a classically trained musician, which is your favourite instrument to play? LP Definitely the fiddle, though the piano comes a close second. Until recently I didn't have a piano at home, but I now have a bright purple one which is in the process of being restored. The harp is a self taught instrument, not dissimilar in logic to the piano. I play this when I need to relax at home, though my Baby Blue electro harp creates quite a buzz at live shows, especially as I 'wear' it on a harness and can move around the stage whilst playing. DL And how much of an influence does this training and your knowledge of the classical composers have on Bluehorses' music?

Aside from distinctive covers of Abilene and elizabeth Cotten s Gone in Pawn (ShakeSugaree), there are ten Po Girl originals, written by Allison and Trish
http://www.festival.bc.ca/top30/pogirl.html
Po' Girl Folk
This story begins in winter 2000 in a house in East Vancouver shared by an ongoing and evolving posse of artists and musicians. Allison Russell had just moved there from Montreal and one of her new roommates was Trish Klein . They both loved playing and singing, and their house was often full of music. They kept saying they "should get together and try some stuff," thinking they might play a little jazz. When they finally did try a few things together, it came out Po' Girl Po' Girl co-conspirators Trish and Allison deliver soulful roots, jazz, and country grooves. They revive all the grit and spirit of old-time sounds through their beguiling original songs and distinctive adaptations of traditionals. Contrasting vocals and strong musicianship create a compelling variety of textures, moods, and emotions. Po' Girl 's sound is timeless and timely. These girls are urban minstrels for the twenty-first century. Trish Klein is a founding member of the Be Good Tanyas , the internationally acclaimed female alt-folk trio. Her accomplished musicianship and gorgeous vocal harmonies are a strong feature of the band's beautifully nostalgic sound. A musician and songwriter with a distinctively natural style, Trish plays banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, fiddle, and mandolin. Her many and varied musical influences include the likes of Taj Mahal, Keith Jarrett, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, Gram Parsons, Fugees, Al Green, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Bessie Smith.
