Author Info: Saul Bellow
The challenge of modern freedom, or the combination of isolation and freedom which confronts you, is to make yourself up. The danger
is that you may emerge from the process as a not-entirely-human creature.
-Saul Bellow Ravelstein Saul Bellow's affectionate roman a clef about the renowned professor Allan Bloom, author of the surprise bestseller The Closing of the American Mind : How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Students Allan Bloom 1930-1992), stirred up quite a ruckus, because it revealed to the public (it was apparently well known to his friends, students, and colleagues) that Bloom was a homosexual who had died of AIDs, not liver failure has had been pronounced the cause of death. Yet in the novel, Bloom (Abe Ravelstein) specifically requires of Bellow (Chick) that he write a memoir of him when he is gone and since Ravelstein is honest to a fault, especially with his friends, it's hard to imagine that Bloom would have objected to Bellow merely being truthful. More importantly, Bloom's homosexualitywell, really the early and unnecessary death that his homosexuality caused, ''destroyed by his reckless sex habits", is how Chick puts itis the mystery that lies at the core of the book. There would be no tension to the book without it and without our expectation that Bellow will eventually unravel the mystery, and the ultimate failure of the book is that he never does, perhaps can not.

Obituary, Allan Bloom
Nicholas Cassimatis "To educate educators! But the first ones must educate themselves! And for these I write." -Friedrich Nietzsche Allan Bloom, author and professor at the University of Chicago, died October 7th while hospitalized for peptic ulcer bleeding complicated by liver failure. He was 62. At the time of his death, he was co-director of the John M. Olin Center for Inquiry into the Theory and Practice of Democracy. Bloom was born in Indianapolis and received his graduate degrees at the University of Chicago. Over the course of his career, he also taught at Yale, Cornell, the University of Toronto, Tel Aviv University, and the University of Paris. What Bloom wrote eulogizing his teacher, Leo Strauss , can be said of him: "The story of a life in which the only real events were thoughts is easily told." While best known for his 1987 book, The Closing of the American Mind , Bloom published seven other books and numerous articles. The spirit of his writing and teaching can perhaps be best gleaned from the following autobiographical fragment:
"When I was fifteen years old I saw the University of Chicago for the first time and somehow sensed that I had discovered my life.... The longing for I knew not what suddenly found a response in the world outside."

The University of Chicago Magazine
October 1997 Bloom's day, I In the mid-1950s I was a student of Allan Bloom, PhB'49, AM'53, PhD'55 ("Bloom in Review," August/97), not on the quads but at the Downtown Center on Dearborn Street. I had finagled my way into the Basic Program for Adults-a program for mature professionals seeking roundtable discussions. I was a 20-year-old South Side Irish Catholic, a blue-collar worker, a graduate of a trade school who convinced the faculty that I might belong in such a program. On Saturday mornings, Allan Bloom and his colleagues would open with intellectual intimidation-perhaps silence, or a question that seemed opaque-but, more often than not, I-the wise fool-would break the ice. What would ensue was mental wrestling. At the end of the mornings, Lucy's expressed sympathy for Charlie Brown after an especially brutal day would have been most apt: "Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose." The class's could have been Charlie's response: "That would be so nice!" I don't think any one of us ever left a Bloom seminar feeling superior to those who would be our children and grandchildren-today's students. I do think we enjoyed not only a passion for reading but also the tough wrestling with ideas-and the erotic equivalent that comes from intense discussion of the ideas found in the "big" books.

The Republic of Plato

What is so fascinating about this translation and the essay is that it deviates in important ways from the typical Christian Platonist conception of philosophy. Bllom is engaged in a war of sorts, it is stunning oh so many other academics fail to recognize how Bloom undermines their common assumptions about 'The Republic' and philosophy itself. Note the absence of comment on the 'Divided Line' of Book VI, and the entire discussion of the 'Theory of Forms' get short shrift. Why? There is a re... more...

The Closing of the American Mind (Chapter1)
I finished Chapter 1 of Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind . The feeling of exhilaration that comes reading page after page of thought-provoking points has not abated yet. In this chapter, he discusses students keeping books, music (which I already talked about the last time), and relationships (self-centredness, equality, race, sex, separateness, divorce, love, erose) in perspective. I will stress some of his more valid points, especially the ones I agree with. A lot of what he said annoyed me, but some of it I thought was reasonable. He talks about the American students' intellectual obtuseness in an optimistic manner and claims that it is not a stunting of humanity to be unfamiliar with classical writers (unlike their European counterparts), but rather that they give promise of a continuing vitality since natural curiousity and love of knowing came first without traditional constraints or encouragements and without society's rewards or punishments. This is something I believe is still true-the absolute freedom the epitomises a liberal arts education might not produce a plethora of people who are capable of accomplishing technical tasks to perfection; rather it promises an extremely rewarding life for The Good Student intellectually and otherwise. Bloom, however, thinks otherwise. He thinks that "wiping the slate clean" was inadequate. American tradition, that tells the story of the unbroken, inelectable progress of freedom and equality, is no longer revered and is not used to provide intellectual saddle for the students. That the Founding and the American principles are racist is a popular conviction prompted by the racist. Nietzsche said the newspaper had replaced the prayer in the life of the modern bourgeois, meaning that the busy, the cheap, the ephemeral, had usurped all that remained of the eternal in his daily life. Now Bloom claims Television has replaced the newspaper altering the tastes of the young and old, subverting all and turning them into sheep that fit a "popular culture".

The Closing of the American Mind (Introduction). This is a review of the introduction to The Closing of the American Mind by allan bloom.

The Closing of the American Mind (Introduction)
This is a review of the introduction to The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom. Almost every page of the book, when stripped off of the extravagant words, presents a lucid idea that excites me for its outrageousness, clarity, and truth ! It's so easy to simply slip off on a tangent from each page, but I'll try to refrain from doing that. The book describes "how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students." Even using abstract terms such as "soul", Bloom gets the essence of his message across pretty vividly. The introduction is about Our Virtue, that of openness. However, Bloom brings to bear two sorts of openness. One that should be in order for us to be able to philosophise and animates anyone who wishes to learn. The other is responsible for the closing; the openness of indifference. Cultural relativism is the latter sort of openness. Primary education has dedicated itself to showing that this relativism is necessary for openness. However, "the point is not correct the mistakes and really be right; rather it is not to think you are right all." Bloom points out that only in Western Society is there some willingness to doubt the identification of the good with one's ownq way. Most non-Western cultures believe their own culture to be superior to others, and this is natural, and exactly the opposite of western thought. "But by requiring students to study these cultures, what we are really doing is applying a Western Prejudice-which we covertly take to indicate the superiority of our culture-and deforming the evidence of those other cultures to attest to its validity."

Poisoned Eros
Love and Friendship. Reviewed by Edward T. Oakes "Christianity gave Eros poison to drink. He didn't die, but became vice." This is one of Nietzsche's more famous obiter dicta , and Allan Bloom finds the occasion to cite it more than once in this, his last book, finished shortly before his death in 1992. In our post- Nietzschean age of AIDS and rampant venereal disease, the remark now carries with it a certain unintentional irony, but one finishes reading Bloom's book not entirely sure why erotic relations nowadays are so dreary: Is it because of the relentless reductionism of Freud and Kinsey or because, as Nietzsche held, Eros and Institution will always be at war-and Christianity, with its rigorous stress on monogamy, now symbolizes for modern society the institution of marriage par excellence ? In any event, Bloom on Freud is scathing: The enduring appeal of Freud, even to sophisticated people like Jacques Derrida, is the license he appears to give for talking endlessly about sex in relation to all things. He brings an unbeatable combination of sex, science, and the promise of being well-adjusted. Of course, reading Freud is the most neurotic experience one could imagine. Hardly a page or a line of Freud could arouse erotic excitement in any normal reader. . . . It is all unmasking and showing the miserable effects of sex on our souls. In Freud, sex is the most important thing in our lives, but it is certainly not a beautiful one.

Love and Friendship, by Allan Bloom
Kristol, William
In an age of declaimers and debunkers, pontificators and pundits, the late Allan Bloom was a teacher. It is fitting that in Love and Friendship, completed shortly before his death in October 1992, Bloom writes above all as a teacher. It is fitting, too, that in his last book Bloom should address the fundamental human phenomena of love and friendship, as well as such cognate issues as marriage, religion, and the nature of men and women. ...he also means to explicate, at considerable length and with great care, what his chosen writers have to teach... ...but he inclines toward Socrates as giving a truer account of our nature... ...This is a personal affront because one likes to think that one possesses a uniqueness and special worth that no one else can grasp... ...But Rousseau could locate no solid ground for this longing, and no solid basis for those goals... ...For over three decades, Bloom attracted and inspired students at the universities of Cornell, Toronto, and Chicago, where he taught the great books and the permanent questions considered in those books... ...Moreover, in reading it, one can begin to see how and why Allan Bloom was so powerful a presence in the classroom...

Peace Now! Socialism Never! Main August 17, 2002 Heads I Win, Tails You Lose - The commander of the "Red" team in the just-completed Millennium Challenge 2002 wargames, widely taken to "validate new war-fighting concepts" that the US might, might use to invade one or more countries in the Persian Gulf region, says that the Pentagon...cheated. Paul Van Riper, who headed the Marine Corps Combat Development Command when he retired in 1997 as a three-star general, said he became so frustrated with undue constraints on his command of "enemy" forces that he quit the role midway through Millennium Challenge 2002, which ended Aug. 15. His complaints were reported Friday by the Army Times, a private newspaper that covers Army issues. The Times obtained a copy of an e-mail Van Riper sent to colleagues explaining why he had quit. (From yesterday's Washington Post article, " Ex-General Says Wargames Were Rigged " by Robert Burns.) A spokesman for the Joint Forces Command said there is "no record" of Riper having quit. You'd think someone might remember one way or the other, but UO supposes it doesn't do to inquire too closely about these things.
