Enough Rope by Lawrence Block Published by HarperCollins 896 pages, 2002 Why I Hate Lawrence Block Reviewed by Kevin Burton Smith Lawrence Block, Lawrence Block, Lawrence Block ... Sheesh, gimme a break. I'm just so tired of hearing about him. OK, so he's this prolific, multiple-award-winning New York City author. But what has he done for ME lately? And with the publication of Enough Rope , a humongous, jaw-dropping collection of his short crime fiction that traces Mr. Big Shot's career from just about the dawn of time (actually, around 1957) to earlier this year, we're about to be subjected to yet another onslaught of publicity. There'll be no escape! I mean, January Magazine even wanted me to interview him for this occasion, but I won't do it, I tell you, I won't! After all, what on earth would I have to say to Lawrence Block? "Go away, you bother me"? That I detest him? Well, that would certainly speed up the interview, I guess ... But it's true the guy just grates on me. How much, you ask? Well, let me count the ways:

But remarkably, I never got another idea for a science-fiction story. I read a fair amount of it, and I know many science-fiction writers, and certainly respect them, but I can't seem to write it myself." This interview with Lawrence Block is jinxed. It's gotta be after all, it started out more than a year ago, with a sit-down at Jerry's Famous Deli in Los Angeles' oh-so-trendy Westwood Village, but it wound up only a few minutes ago when I checked my e-mail. In between, there was a string of delays, postponements, blown deadlines, missed connections, bad timing and just plain bad luck. As January Magazine 's designated Block expert, it was my job to find out what was up with this four-time Edgar Award winner, five-time Shamus winner, Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America and arguably the best detective writer in the business right now. Our first meeting took place shortly after the publication of

A Conversation With Lawrence Block
by Claire E. White New York Times bestselling mystery author Lawrence Block continues to rack up awards and rave reviews in equal measure. He is amazingly prolific, and has that rare ability to write equally well in numerous genres. His first popular creation was Evan Tanner, the Cold War era spy who never sleeps (his sleep center was destroyed in the Korean War). Part James Bond, part Bertie Wooster, and part Sir Lancelot, Tanner hops his way from country to country and from beautiful companion to beautiful companion doing super secret spy work, stumbling into nascent revolutions, and supporting obscure political causes. Tanner was placed in deep freeze at the end of the 1960s, and, to the immense delight of his fans, was recently unfrozen in the bestselling Tanner on Ice . For those that love a good humorous caper story, it doesn't get any better than the Tanner novels.

Block, Lawrence. The Burglar in the Library. July 1997. 320p. Dutton, $22.95 (0-525-94301-3). Dibdin, Michael. Cosi Fan Tutti. May 1997. 256p. Pantheon, $23 (0-679-44272-3). The comic crime novel is necessarily a peculiar animal. When writers make murder the occasion for laughter, they risk painting themselves into an obviously artificial corner. Dead bodies are intrinsically unfunny in real life, so when they become an excuse to demonstrate wit and cleverness, we know that the terra under our feet is no longer particularly firma . Not that most people mind: the comedic capering that takes place when Edmund Crispin's Gervase Fen careens about Oxford, or when the gentle folk of Maggody, Arkansas, bumble into another batch of dead guys, offers a wonderful alternative to the real worldall the entertaining trappings of daily life without its ugly underside. The best comic crime writers have mastered walking the thin line between artificial and real: tilt too much toward the artificial, and your comedy sinks to the level of puppet show; get too real, on the other hand, and suddenly you're not very funny anymore. The authors of these two masterful crime novels don't just walk that thin line; they dance on it, laughing at the form that sustains them while twisting it in some altogether original and hilarious ways.

Lawrence Block
(pseuds: William Ard, Jill Emerson, Chip Harrison, Paul Kavanagh, Sheldon Lord, Andrew Shaw)
Lawrence Block is a one of the most successful crime writers around, both critically and commercially. He's created several very different series characters: sex-crazy teenager Chip Harrison ; sleepless, reluctant spy Evan Tanner ; easy-going, good-natured burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr , quirky, conflicted assassin Keller ; plucky little criminal lawyer Martin Ehrengraf who has never lost a case, ever; and his prize creation, tormented alcoholic (and then recovering alcoholic) private eye Matt Scudder . He has published articles and short fiction in American Heritage Redbook Playboy GQ EQMM , and The New York Times, and has published several collections of short fiction in book form. He's a Grand Master of Mystery Writers of America, has won the Edgar and Shamus awards four times and the Japanese Maltese Falcon award twice, as well as the Nero Wolfe award. In France, he has been proclaimed a Grand Maitre du Roman Noir and has twice been awarded the Societe 813 trophy. He has been a guest of honor at Bouchercon and at book fairs and mystery festivals around the world, and has been presented with the key to the city of Muncie, Indiana. He is a past president of the Private Eye Writers of America and the Mystery Writers of America. Not bad for a guy who, early in his career, cranked out porn paperbacks, lesbian and otherwise, under assorted pseudonyms. In fact, Block is so well-regarded now that in publishers are bringing out pricy hardcover limited editions of Block's "risque" PBOs, that he originally wrote under pen names such as Andrew Shaw, Sheldon Lord and Jill Emerson.

From the Publisher
Lawrence Block weaves his spell in this suspenseful taleof a man haunted by murders he hopes he hasnt committed . . .
It was all too frighteningly familiar. For the second time in his life, Alex Penn wakes up in an alcoholic daze in a cheap hotel room off Times Square and finds himself lying next to the savagely mutilated body of a young woman. After the first death, he was convicted of murder and imprisoned, then released on a technicality. But this time he has to find out what happened during the blackout and why before the police do.

    "Small Town"
The book is actually pretty decent. Lawrence Block's a very good writer; he has a way of drawing some really wonderful scenes. Character, in this, plays a huge role. He has a huge cast of people, each with their own well-defined voices, their thoughts very realistic. Their purpose is not just to propel the story, but to act as a part of one of Block's under themes in many ways, Small Town is a meditation on the events of September 11th, 2001. How it changed the flavor of the city, how it changed the lives of the people, not just in the obvious ways as they deal with loss at various levels, but deep down. Some of Jerry's thoughts on the matter, in particular, resonate. "First time he saw the new version, [of the I love New York slogan] on a tee shirt in a shop window, the damn thing moved him to tears. But then for a while there almost everything did. The capsule biographies of the dead that ran every day in the Times, for instance. He couldn't read them, and he couldn't keep from reading them." So there's a lot of good. I reviewed and loved Block's

In The Burglar on the Prowl , Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr, the so-called bookseller-by-day/burglar-by-night (at least some nights), is at it again. In this delightful 10th book of Block's Bernie series, the first of which, Burglars Can't Be Choosers , dates back to 1977, a married friend requests Bernie's assistance in extracting revenge upon a so-called "Shitheel" (also married) who has stolen the friend's young girl friend. The friend is Marty Gilmartin, the fellow with the valuable baseball card collection which Bernie steals in Bernie book # 6
