A Tiny Frankenstein
Eric Lindh
James Blaylock has always stood somewhat in the shadow of his successful fellow writer and pal, Tim Powers. Their work has many similarities, possibly from their early collaboration (along with K.W. Jeter) in college in southern California. Blaylock may be less well known and read than Powers, but he is a powerful and effective author, an inventive fantasist who has produced some excellent work. Among his finest books is Homunculus (Ace, 1986) which begins on a dark night in Victorian London with the appearance of a spectral blimp, piloted by a skeleton tied to a ship's wheel, and follows a twisted path through alien contact, perpetual motion, and the reanimation of the Dead.
What could have been a kitchen sink narrative of willy nilly subplots is in fact a tale of great craft, following the adventures of an English gentleman scientist in a quest to find a purloined alien spaceship. The story gets weirder as he must contend with a demented dwarf doctor who is raising an army of tract-waving fundamentalist zombies from the freshly dug graveyards of London, and a scheming industrialist seeking a toymaker who may have harnessed perpetual motion. Everything leads back to the mysterious blimp and three strange boxes, one of which might contain a tiny alien with the power to drive men insane. The scientist throws in his lot with the motley crew of the Trismegistus Club, amateur investigators of the Bizarre, and the game is indeed Afoot.
Homunculus is a Steampunk book more in style than in equipment. Thoroughly Victorian in setting and acroutement, it moves ahead with a 1980's sensibility, its characters motivated by a High Sci Fi zeitgeist. It manages to balance this with a portrayal of the (naively) open minded Victorian curiosity and desire to know everything. The characters all exhibit a strange matter-of-factness about truly weird, bizarre ideas, a sort of H.G. Wells world made flesh. There is something very

Author Biography and Bibliography
James P. Blaylock grew up in southern California and, with the exception of some time spent in coastal northern California, he has lived in Orange County all his life. He teaches composition and creative writing at Chapman University; in fact, he has been a writing teacher since 1976, about the same time that he sold his first short story, "Red Planet," to Unearth magazine. He has written fourteen novels as well as dozens of short stories, essays, and articles. Among his recent novels are Night Relics, an atmospheric ghost story set in the Santa Ana Mountains and the city of Orange; The Paper Grail, a foggy and fantastic romance set along the Mendocino coast in northern California; All the Bells on Earth, a Faustian mystery that transpires in the old neighborhoods of downtown Orange during a rainy and unusual Christmas season; and Winter Tides, a ghost-and-murer mystery set in Huntington Beach. His latest novel, The Rainy Season, was published in August of 1999. Blaylock is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award, most recently for his short story "Thirteen Phantasms." His story "Unidentified Objects" was included in

James P. Blaylock,
The Rainy Season
(Ace, 1999)
James P. Blaylock's The Rainy Season is a subtle, haunting novel about obsession and memory. It is the rainy season in coastal southern California, and the water forced up from its underground channels creates pools and fills wells to over-brimming, as does the well in Phil Ainsworth's yard. To Phil, it's just a well, but to others it is a place of power, a portal opened through the sacrifice of a child. During the rainy season, these people watch and wait. A widower, Phil now lives alone in the house he inherited from his mother, still full of her things and his memories of her. He has grown accustomed to his solitude and has no idea that it is about to be broken. A late night call brings bad news: his twin sister, Marianne, is dead, and he is the legal guardian of her 9-year-old daughter, Betsy. When he flies to Austin, he finds his guardianship challenged by a neighbor, Mrs. Darwin, who seems to feel she has a claim on Betsy. Later, she tells Phil that she is missing a trinket, a small glass inkwell, and she implies that Betsy has stolen it. The inkwell is Betsy's, and its value lies in its effect when held, when it generates realistic memories. It is, in fact, a piece of memory, just like other small items found in the area where Phil lives, many of which are said to capture the memories of drowned children. When Phil and Betsy get back to his house, they are caught up in events beyond their control as the past collides with the present, and the well reveals secrets he never would have guessed.

James P. Blaylock,
(Edgewood, 2000; Ace, 2003)
California writer of fantastic fiction James P. Blaylock, although not prolific in the shorter form, has produced some award-winners happily included among the 16 stories (two co-authored with Tim Powers) collected in the book . Although all of the stories have been published in the past, many are hard to find today a problem resolved with this release! The collection begins with an introduction titled "Five Hundred Dollars" about how California local color and eccentricities, folklore and odd junk shops combined with Blaylock's interests in aquariums and exotica to influence his writing. Following this interesting beginning, the book demonstrates the author's superlative gift for transforming the autobiographical and the mundane into numinous and wondrous fictions. "13 Phantasms," the World Fantasy Award-winning title story, is about a man who returns (thanks to some mysterious process) to the Golden Age of science fiction by responding to an ad in an old issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine. The story delights. So too does the other World Fantasy Award recipient, "Paper Dragons," which sympathetically depicts how one man's obsession with the creation of a mechanical/clockwork dragon gradually destroys him. Both of these stories along with "Red Planet," "Bugs," "The Better Boy" (with Powers), "The Light of Fading Neon," "The Old Curiosity Shop," "Doughnuts," "We Traverse Afar" (also with Powers), "The Shadow on the Doorstep," "Myron Chester and the Toads" and "Unidentified Flying Objects" exemplify Blaylock's magic surrealism style.

a critical list with discussions
Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by James Blaylock
This is a brief discussion of James Blaylock and, of course, of some books by James Blaylock.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Blaylock; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Blaylock tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Blaylock worthy; in sum, to help you rank Blaylock (and the works by Blaylock listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.
A Few Words About James Blaylock
James Blaylock has managed the impressive feat of writing books of enduring quality in at least four distinct modes or styles. Those styles can be set up in quite a number of interesting similarity groupings, but let us first see what they are. Using names I will explain below, they are his:

Not for everyone but a good book for those of us with a taste for the unusual and bizarre. Well-written, rich, and deeply-hued descriptions wrap the strange doings into a thick texture of mystery and wonderment. I seldom laugh out loud while reading a book and I definitely didn't expect to with this dark fantasy. It depicts and chronicles numerous nasty and revolting characters. Though they're not evil or violent in a horror-novel sense, robbing graves and orchestrating zombies doesn't set up expectations for finding much humor. But it's there in an Alice In Wonderland kind of style - and possibly more effective because of the surprising appearances. More opinions and discussion

80. James Blaylock OmniVisions Interview
Jim Freund Welcome to OmniVisions. Tonight our guest is fantasy/sf writerJames P. blaylock, whose latest novel, Winter Tides will be out shortly.

James Blaylock
conducted June 12, 1997
Jim Freund: Welcome to OmniVisions. Tonight our guest is fantasy/sf writer James P. Blaylock, whose latest novel, Winter Tides will be out shortly. As we begin, Jim Blaylock had a story for us that was erased from here in an alternate universe. Jim, would you care to repeat that? Jim Blaylock: No. what? JF: I think it involved abalone...? Ellen Datlow: Your joke, Jim (B). Repeat your joke. It was funny. JB: Okay. It seems as if there was this guy, see, who crossed a crocodile and an abalone, and what he got was an abadile and a crock of baloney. JF: Ouch! Well, let that be a lesson. Welcome, Jim! (and Ellen, of course) JB: I'm happy to be here. Am I being paid for this travesty? JF: Consider it an in-kind donation. Why not start by telling us a bit about Winter Tides ... What genre (if any) would you place it in? JB: Winter Tides , I guess, is in the fantasy horror genre. It's a ghost story of sorts, set in Huntington Beach, a local beach city. There's even a severed head in the book. JF: Severed heads seem to be in these days. I was thinking of it as an intrigue novel with supernatural overtones. I finished it on my way home tonight, and really enjoyed the feeling at the end. Whether it's supernatural/horror may be subjective, I thought.
