    HOMUNCULUS
    James P. Blaylock
Few writers dare attempt a historical fantasy in an effort to best Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and Robert Louis Stevenson at their own game, but back in 1986 long before the current alternate history craze James Blaylock not only tried, but succeeded brilliantly. Darkly atmospheric, Homonculus weaves together the stories of Narbondo a mad hunchback who works tirelessly to bring the dead back to life, of the members of the Trismegistus Club a surly group of scientists and philosophers who meet at Captain Powers' Pipe Shop, and of the homonculus a tiny man whose powers can drive men to murder. Homonculus is a fascinating trip to a London that never existed ... but perhaps should have.

    ****Homunculus is a Roller Coaster...
Homunculus is a roller coaster of excitement. I think Blaylock may have lived in 18th century London, and might actually know the secret of the carp bladder himself. I have a theory, in fact that James P. Blaylock is none other than his own character Ignacio Narbondo, and these books are simply his own autobiography. Of course he threw us off his trail when he killed himself in the "Digging Leviathan".
This book, and series is excelent (I'm half way through Lord Kelvin's Machine)....

The Paper Grail by James P. Blaylock
(Ace, 1991) Reviewed by Jim Henry I picked this one up because of the quotation page, which has bits from John Ruskin, G. K. Chesterton, and Edward Lear; and I'm very glad that I did so. The hero is going up to northern California to pick up an old drawing which has been offered on loan to the museum he works at. When he gets there, he finds the owner missing, apparently dead, and the sketch gone. There are a lot of other people who want to find it for various reasons of their own. The story starts out slow and seemingly aimless, but the fascinating characters carry it along until the plot takes shape. The characters are most of them people I would travel a long way to meet... Or, in the case of the villains, travel an even longer way to avoid meeting. For example, Roy Barton (the hero's uncle), enjoying life greatly and ready to risk his life for his friends, and enjoying money when he has it without killing himself trying to get more and more and more of it. His plans for neat ways to make money remind me of a boy breathlessly telling his mom about the lemonade stand he is going to run. Or Heloise Lamey, miserly, power-hungry, nearly dead ("dried-up", like the wicked witches of Oz), and very terrifying. The story develops what happens when the sketch is folded into an origami cup, what the sketch is and why so many people want it, and what it has to do with John Ruskin's bones and Humpty-Dumpty.

James P. Blaylock, Thirteen Phantasms (Edgewood Press, 2000; Ace 2003) In this workaday world, we often file everyday events into a folder labeled "minutiae," stick it in the back of our mind's drawer, and close the cabinet without having read the fine print. Or, for that matter, without even glancing at the larger picture. Each day becomes a carbon copy of the last, shuffling itself off into the endless paperwork of our mind, which quickly becomes overwhelmed with all the sameness: Get up, feed the cats/dogs/fish/spouse/kids, do chores, go to work, go home, eat, watch TV, feed the cats/dogs/fish/spouse/kids, go to bed. If we want to recall a particular event from a particular day, our mind ends up comparing details until something stands out, viewing the pictures like one of those comic strips that asks you to "find 10 differences in these frames." We leave little or no room for the fantastic, closing ourselves off from the wonders that the seemingly mundane may hold. Don't believe me? When was the last time you wondered at the size of a garden-grown tomato? Marveled over the metamorphosis of a moth? Gone in an old curiosity shop or aquarium supply store just to see what it had to sell? Happily, James Blaylock hasn't let the world speed by. He looks at every detail, every nuance, and finds the marvelous in the mundane, the extra in the ordinary.

James P. Blaylock, The Rainy Season (Ace, 2000) The Rainy Season is a tale of murder and intrigue, child sacrifice and time travel, a very odd, thought-provoking combination. Right from the first page I was totally captivated by Blaylock's evocative prose. Throughout my reading I found myself fully drawn into the story and living the experiences of the protagonists. The Rainy Season is one of those novels that I refer to as a 'movie story' I can visualise in my mind the whole story as I read. Essentially The Rainy Season is the story of Phil Ainsworth, a widower who lives alone in the house once owned by his mother. He is a photographer hiding from the world after the loss of his wife. He is thrown back into life through the death of his sister and the arrival of Betsy, his ten-year-old niece to whom he is now guardian. And so begins the strange turn of events. First, Marianne's will and Phil's guardianship are contested by Mrs. Darwin, who had been caring for Betsy and believed that she had been more of a mother than Betsy's own mother and thus she should be allowed to care for and adopt Betsy. It is only later on that we are shown the true Mrs. Darwin. Betsy owns a piece of very worn glass shaped like an inkwell that had once belonged to her mother and her mother before that. It contains a memory of a woman giving birth and for some reason everyone seems to be searching for the inkwell. Before long Phil finds himself having to protect Betsy not only from Mrs. Darwin but also from Mr. Appleton, who has very sinister motives for obtaining the inkwell and Betsy, and from his assistant Elizabeth Kelly, who wants the inkwell because she believes it is of monetary value.
