William Blake. Jaques and the Wounded Stag Pen and watercolor on paper, approximately 8.5 x 6 inches. The British Museum, London. The Reverend Joseph Thomas owned a copy of the second edition (1632) of Shakespeare's Folio , and he commissioned several artists to furnish him with illustrations to insert into his copy of the plays. William Blake, who had earlier rendered eight illustrations for a copy of Milton's Comus owned by Thomas, was asked to paint six pictures for the Folio . Besides Jaques and the Wounded Stag , Blake contributed these illustrations as well: Richard III and the Ghosts (c. 1806-09), Queene Katherine's Vision Brutus and the Ghost of Caesar Hamlet and His Father's Ghost and An Angel Vaulting from a Cloud The other artistsJohn Flaxman, William Varley, William Hamilton, Robert Porter and William Mulreadycontributed another thirty illustrations of the plays. Blake's painting depicts a scene from As You Like It that is only described for us in the play. In Act II, Scene i, the Duke considers hunting deer in Arden, but his tender feelings for the animals give him pause: Come, shall we go and kill us venison?

Lyrics that were omitted from the illuminated canon are brought together as "Songs and Ballads", with a further group of "Satiric Verses and Epigrams". The late prose treatises are followed by the marginalia, other miscellaneous prose, and all of the letters. Verses occurring in the Reynolds marginalia and in the letters have not been disturbed. Within these groups a rough chronology is observed, but only when thematic or generic relations fail to offer more meaningful groupings. A definitive chronological sequence of Blake's writings is impossible from present knowledge. Lines in the longer poems are here numbered by relatively small units, usually page or plate, since no standard numbering that suits a diplomatic text has been established. The numbering of plates for Jerusalem , which varies in Chapter II, is that of the British Museum, Rinder, and Morgan copies. The problem of there being two sections in the manuscript of

William Blake. The Song of Los Relief etching with watercolor, approximately 9 x 7 inches. Huntington Library, San Marino, California. This illustration from The Song of Los is sometimes entitled A King and Queen on a Lily and it is accompanied by these lines from the poem: "I will sing you a song of Los, the Eternal Prophet: / He sung it to four harps at the table of Eternity" (Book III, lines 1-2). The four harps are the four continents: Africa, Asia, Europe and America. "These early prophecies," according to Milton Klonsky, "traced the spiritual history of mankind, from slavery in Africa under the laws of Urizen to the revolutionary outbursts in Europe and America during Blake's lifetime" (39). The association with Shakespeare comes from an earlier picture (c.1790-93), almost the same as this one but with the image reversed, entitled Oberon and Titania on a Lily with its source in A Midsummer Night's Dream

Buy this poster at Art.com British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th- century. He joined for a time the Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem in London and considered Newtonian science to be superstitious nonsense. Misunderstanding shadowed his career as a writer and artist and it was left to later generations to recognize his importance. Blake's last years were passed in obscurity, quarreling even with some of the circle of friends who supported him.

The Marriage of Heaven and Hell": "... Alle bibeler eller hellige skrifter er årsak til følgende vilfarelser:

Or search the encyclopaedia: Blake, William A watercolour by the English poet and painter William Blake. Blake, a deeply religious man, claimed to see visions and hear voices, and believed that materialistic values were meaningless and that he must trust his own instincts and imagination.
English poet, artist, engraver, and visionary, and one of the most important figures of English Romanticism . His lyrics, often written with a childlike simplicity, as in Songs of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794), express a unique spiritual vision. In his prophetic books , including The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790), he created a vast personal mythology. He illustrated his own works with hand-coloured engravings. Blake was born in London and, at the age of 14, was apprenticed to an engraver before entering the Royal Academy in 1778. He then became an independent engraver and in 1782 married Catherine Boucher, who collaborated with him on many of his projects.

WILLIAM BLAKE
BLAKE, WILLIAM It was afterwards discovered that the artist had executedoriginal designs in water-color for the whole series, and thesedrawings, 537 in number, form one of the most interestingrecords of Blakes genius. Gilchrist, the painters biographer,in commenting upon the engraved plates, regrets the absenceof color, the use of which Blake so well understood, to relievehis simple design and give it significance, and an examinationof the original water-color drawings fully supports the justiceof his criticism. Soon after the publication of this work Blakewas introduced by Flaxman to the poet Hayley, and in the year1801 he accepted the suggestion of the latter, that he should take up his residence at Feipham in Sussex. The mild and A life of Blake, with selections from his works, by Alexander Gilchrist, was published in 1863 (new edition by W. G. Robertson, 1906); in 1868 A. C. Swinburne published a critical essay on his genius, remarkable for a full examination of the Prophetic Books, and in 1874 William Michael Rossetti published a memoir prefixed to an edition of the poems. In 1893 appeared The Works of William Blake, edited by E. J. Ellis and W. B. Yeats. But for a long time all the editors paid too little attention to a correct following of Blakes own MSS. The text of the poems was finally edited with exemplary care and thoroughness by John Sampson in his edition of the Poetical Works (1905), which has rescued Blake from the improvements of previous editors. See also The Letters of William Blake, together, with a Life by Frederick Taiham; edited by A. G. B. Russell (1906); and Basil de Selincourt, William,Blake (1909). (J. C. C.)

"Blake, William" English poet and artist A Poison Tree I was angry with my friend : I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe : I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; With soft, deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright; And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole: In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree. - William Blake - Blake, William (1757-1827), English poet, painter, and engraver, who created a unique form of illustrated verse; his poetry, inspired by mystical vision, is among the most original lyric and prophetic in the language. Blake was born November 28, 1757, in London, where he lived most of his life. William Blake infused his poetry with mysticism and complex symbolism. He explored issues of divine love in the collection Songs of Innocence (1789), while he considered the nature of evil in Songs of Experience (1794). Blake also juxtaposed poems from the first collection with corresponding poems from the second. For example, "The Lamb" from the first collection provides a gentle counterpart to "The Tyger" (excerpt recited by an actor), from the second. In his so-called Prophetic Books, a series of longer poems written from 1789 on, Blake created a complex personal mythology and invented his own symbolic characters to reflect his social concerns. A true original in thought and expression, he declared in one of these poems
