Richard Doddridge Blackmore
Richard Doddridge Blackmore ), one of the most famous English novelists of the his generation, was born on June 9 , at Longworth, Berkshire , of which parish his father was vicar. Like John Ridd, the hero of " Lorna Doone ," he was educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton. An early marriage with a beautiful Portuguese girl, and a long illness, forced him to live for some years in hard and narrow circumstances. Happily, in , he came, unexpectedly, into a considerable fortune. Settling down at Teddington , he divided his life between the delights of gardening and the pleasures of literature; cultivating his vines, peaches, nectarines, pears, and strawberries, and writing, first, sensational stories, and then historical romances. In , with his third attempt in fiction, "Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor," he suddenly became famous as a novelist, and acted as the pioneer of the new romantic movement in fiction which R. L. Stevenson and other brilliant writers afterwards carried on. Lorna Doone is the most famous of his heroines, but in "Cradock Nowell," a fine tale of the New Forest , in "Alice Lorraine," a story of the South Downs , and in "The Maid of Sker," he has depicted womanly types equal in charm to Lorna. He died at Teddington on

Dominus Illuminatio Mea
When the heart beats low, and the eyes grow dim,
The lover of the Lord shall trust in Him. When the will has forgotten the lifelong aim,
And the mind can only disgrace its fame,
The power of the Lord shall fill this frame. When the last sigh is heaved, and the last tear shed,
And the coffin is waiting beside the bed,
The angel of the Lord shall lift this head. For even the purest delight may pall,
And power must fail, and the pride must fall,
But the glory of the Lord is all in all. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Susan Blackmore The Meme Machine
When we look at religions from a meme's eye view we can understand why they have been so successful. These religious memes did not set out with an intention to succeed. They were just behaviours, ideas and stories that were copied from one person to another in the long history of human attempts to understand the world. They were successful because they happened to come together into mutually supportive gangs that included all the right tricks to keep them safely stored in millions of brains, books and buildings, and repeatedly passed on to more. They evoked strong emotions and strange experiences. They provided myths to answer real questions and the myths were protected by untestability, threats, and promises. They created and then reduced fear to create compliance, and they used the beauty, truth and altruism tricks to help their spread. (page 192) On a warm 4th of July evening, my family and I were driving back to California from Oregon. We hit the town Ashland just before sundown and decided to stop and see if we could find a fireworks show. The downtown area was loaded with people so we figured the show must be downtown. We looked long and hard for a parking place before counting ourselves lucky to have found one in such a crowded place. We asked someone where the fireworks were going to be shot from, but they didn't know. They pointed us in a general direction though. Since most of the people were heading that way, we did too. After about a mile of walking

PRINCE ARTHUR. AN HEROICK POEM IN TEN BOOKS
by
SIR RICHARD BLACKMORE
THE PREFACE
To what ill purposes soever Poetry has been abus'd, its true and genuine End is by universal Confession, the Instruction of our Minds, and Regulation of our Manners; for which 'tis furnish'd with so many excellent Advantages. The Delicacy of its Strains, the Sweetness and Harmony of its Numbers, the lively and admirable manner of its Painting or Representation, and the wonderful Force of its Eloquence, cannot but open the Passages to our Breasts, triumph over our Passions, and leave behind them very deep Impressions. 'Tis in the power of Poetry to insinuate into the inmost Recesses of the Mind, to touch any Spring that moves the Heart, to agitate the Soul with any sort of Affection, and transform it into any Shape or Posture it thinks fit. 'Tis therefore no wonder that so wise a State, as that of Athens , should retain the Poets on the side of Religion and the Government . The Stage there was set up to teach the People the Scheme of their Religion , and those Modes of Worship the Government thought fit to encourage, to convey to them such Ideas of their Deities, and Divine Providence, as might engage their Minds to a Reverence of superiour, invisible Beings, and to observe and admire their Administration of humane Affairs. SIR RICHARD BLACKMORE
THE PREFACE
When I had written Prince Arthur , a Poem that came abroad two years ago, I was so diffident of the Performance, that I continu'd unresolv'd for many Weeks, whether I should let it appear, or wholly suppress it, till the Judgment of others, for which I had a great Deference, determin'd me to make it Publick. The Favour and Approbation it met with, was much greater, and far more Universal, even among great Names, and establish'd, uncontested Judges, than I had ever the Vanity to expect. Nor was I in the least surpriz'd or troubled, that it met with some Opposers. For I must have been extreamly ignorant of the nature of Humane Passions, if I had not certainly foreseen, that not only the Design of the Poem, but likewise the Provoking Preface to it, must needs have engag'd a Considerable Party , among whom were several Men of Wit and Parts, to use their utmost Endeavours to sink its Reputation; if indeed it should deserve any. Besides, when I consider'd that I was so great a stranger to the
