Toward a New Hiphop Cinema
by Charles Mudede
IN HIS ESSAY
"Black Visual Intonation," the African American film critic and cinematographer Arthur Jafa (he photographed Daughters of the Dust Crooklyn , and parts of Eyes Wide Shut ) wrote that he was "developing an idea that [he calls] Black visual intonation (BVI)." "What it consists of," he elaborated with great enthusiasm, "is the use of irregular, nontempered (nonmetronomic) camera rates and frame replication to prompt filmic movement to function in a manner that approximates Black vocal intonation." What Jafa hoped to create with these irregular camera techniques (irregular by Hollywood and European standards) is a type of cinema that would inspire what the editor of the book Black Popular Culture , Gina Dent, calls "black pleasure, black joy." In a word, Jafa wants nothing less than a cinema that is aesthetically black. What all of this implies, however, is that there is no such thing as black cinema, yet. There aren't practices, patterns within the system of editing, shooting, directing, that we can categorize as black. If we call a movie a black film, we do so not because of black aesthetics but black content: meaning, the hero is black (

Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving academically and athletically a winning combination. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, each year we invite every postsecondary institution in the country to participate in this awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence, as well as community activism.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or communities.
The following pages feature student-athletes who are charging ahead with academics and athletics. Two of these scholar-athletes — basketball player Kara Lawson of the University of Tennessee and track and field athlete Nathan Irvin of the University of California-Riverside were selected as Sports Scholars of the Year for best exemplifying the standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism.
Black Issues In Higher Education remembers Arthur Ashe Jr. on this 10th anniversary of his death, and salutes Kara and Nathan and all of the 2003 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.

EDMONDS When he began his career, fellow American Indians distrusted Bill Black as an Indian working for the white government. At his death Thursday after a lingering illness, they grieved the loss of a trusted friend. In the beginning, there was a perception that Black was biased against Indians," state Rep. John McCoy said. "If a tribal member went to him to do something and they were wrong, he'd tell them they were wrong. He was a fair individual. He just did his job to the best of his ability every day." McCoy considered Black, the retired superintendent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs' Puget Sound agency and an Okanogan Indian, a personal friend. "He was always there for me. I could make a call to him and we would discuss an issue. We had a lot of philosophical discussions on how things worked in Indian country. He was always there with able advice. I'd have an idea and I'd run it by him and he'd say, 'Well, so-and-so tried that a few years ago, and it didn't work because...' So I'd modify it and we'd talk some more." Judy Joseph, a YakamaNation tribal member who succeeded Black as regional superintendent, worked for him for 21 years.

Gaston: a titan's first step: how an unknown coal miner from Birmingham, Alabama, became the 20th Century's preeminent entrepreneur.(Book Excerpt)(Arthur George Gaston, a titan's first step)(Excerpt) Black Enterprise , Feb, 2004, by Carol Jenkins Elizabeth Gardner Hines The grandson of slaves, born into poverty in 1892 in the Deep South, Arthur George Gaston died at the age of 103 with a fortune worth well over $130 million and a business empire spanning communications, real estate, and insurance. Gaston was, by any measure, a heroic figure whose wealth and influence bore comparison to that of J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie. His first job, after serving in the celebrated all-black regiment during World War I, bound him to the near-slavery conditions of an Alabama coal minebut even here Gaston saw hope and opportunity. This excerpt, taken from the book written by his niece and grandniece, chronicles that period when Gaston first took small steps into the role of entrepreneur that ultimately lead to the giant leap of BLACK ENTERPRISE naming him, on the eve of his 100th birthday, Entrepreneur of the Century. This February, we remember this legendary black titan.

ARTHUR JAFA PAGE
"The very proposition of an authentic black cinema, a cinema as rich in its
power and alienation as black music, instills dread and anticipation in the
hearts of those who want to consign black creativity to the realm of "freak nigger shit," as if it were no more the result of profound intellectual activity than the clotting of blood." - Arthur Jafa Artforum January 1992)
Arthur Jafa is a cultural critic/worker, visual artist and an African diasporic organic intellectual of the first order. His infrequently published thinking around questions of Black cultural politics, Black cultural nationalism, and film is visionary. Those who found such clarity of vision in his contribution to Michele Wallace's Black Popular Culture volume (edited by Gina Dent and assembled following the conference of the same name at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1992) have been eager to hear his thoughts.
As a cinematographer, he has done work with Julie Dash on Daughters of the Dust , as well as Spike Lee's Crooklyn , and Manthia Diawara's

Arthur Mitchell
Founder, Dance Theatre of Harlem
Arthur Mitchell is known around he world as an accomplished artistic director, educator, choreographer and dancer. He has been a pivotal figure in the dance world for over four decades. Mr. Mitchell began his dance training at New York City's High School of Performing Arts, where he was the first male student to win the coveted annual dance award. Upon graduation he was offered two scholarships: one to Bennington College, and one to the School of American Ballet. He accepted the latter. Mr. Mitchell made history as the first African-American male dancer to become a permanent member of a major ballet company when he joined the New York City Ballet in 1955, debuting in the Fourth Movement of "Western Symphony." He quickly rose to the position of principal dancer with New York City Ballet where he electrified audiences with his performances on a broad spectrum of the NYCB repertoire. Mr. Mitchell was equally at home in the neoclassical style of the "Agon" Pas de Deux, as well as in the lighthearted role of Puck in " A Midsummer Night's Dream," two roles choreographed especially for him by the late George Balanchine. His performing career included nightclubs, Broadway, film, and television. He was a popular guest artist in the United States and abroad. Upon learning of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, Mr. Mitchell determined to do something to provide children in Harlem with the kinds of opportunities which he felt had been given to him. That same summer he began giving classes in a remodeled garage. In 1969, with financial assistance from the Ford Foundation, Mitchell and Karel Shook, his teacher and mentor, founded and saw the formal incorporation of Dance Theatre of Harlem both as a school of the allied arts and as a professional dance company. Having long since expanded its boundaries, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multicultural institution, comprised of student and dancers from the United States and around the world.
