, amongst its many roles, has introduced its audience to a seemingly unending parade of personalities and entertainers down the years. Some have thrived and prospered, carving for themselves an indelible place within the hearts and minds of entire generations. Some have blazed brightly, only to burn out quickly and deservedly vanish without trace or thought from the public consciousness. And then there are those whose talent and popularity once made them the favourite of millions, only to ultimately find themselves outstripped by changing tastes and unfairly forgotten except by the small numbers who study broadcasting history and recognise true brilliance when they see it. Arthur Haynes belongs within that select, long and unsung latter group. Arthur was born in Hammersmith, London, in May 1914, the only child of a baker. At school he showed a flair for art so his parents, who were not particularly well off, scraped around enough money to send him to Chiswick Polytechnic Art School to train as an architect. However, when Arthur sat down with them and worked out just how much the course, the equipment he would have to purchase, and his general living expenses would cost him, it worked out to around £2,0000 -quite a hefty sum of money in the 1930's. It was simply beyond their means. So on leaving school Arthur started work with the local bus company as a conductor. Perhaps Arthur had designs to make enough money to eventually go to the Polytechnic, it's not clear, but at the time he was working on the buses he also started going around the local pubs and clubs doing a stand-up comedy routine, in order to increase his income. Then an offer came along of another job; twelve and sixpence a week to work in a furniture store as a clerk. Arthur left the bus company and took up his new position, however, it didn't last.

A nineteen-year run on a national radio program is no mean feat. For a start, you have to have a load of energy mixed with a bunch of funny. Basic stuff for Black, who, while entertaining a half million listeners weekly on CBC Radio’s Basic Black , managed to write several books and countless newspaper columns. Presently, Arthur is the writer, host and narrator of two TV shows, Weird Homes , nominated for a Golden Globe award, and Weird Wheels . Two of his books Black Tie and Tales , and Black in the Saddle , have won the Leacock Medal for Humour. Verging on senior citizen status, Arthur is now writing for 50 Plus Magazine . A radio program, also aimed at the demographically advanced, is in the works. Fed up with tripping over substance abusers on the streets of Toronto, Arthur fled to Saltspring Island in 1995.

He had visited the Kootz Gallery where Motherwell exhibited and was familiar with The Wittenborn Documents of Modern Art Series, including Motherwell’s The Dada Painters and Poets: an Anthology which had been published in 1951. He and a colleague also frequented the Ninth Street Gallery where the Abstract Expressionists exhibited. After graduation from William Howard Taft High School in 1950, Arthur had enrolled at City College in New York for a year while at the same time working in the “bull-pen” of an advertising agency. The black fingers by Jean-Michel MAULPOIX
Rimbaud seen by Pierre Michon
Rimbaud, the son , Gallimard, 1991 Translated from the original French by Catherine Wieder Pierre Michon tells the story of the boy with the black fingers, with laundry-women reddened hands : And it's already with the choice of these very colours the profile of a strange boy being delineated and escaping at the same time. Michon doesn't indeed really tell such a story, he observes it surge and surrounds it. What have we still to learn today about the boy from Ardennes, but that very way he had come, never waited, demanded immediately from poetry, and left ? At what cost do words deserve to rime together ? Is the game of language still worth the candle ? Can living be something else than a mistake ? Michon tells Rimbaud-the-derangement ; he doesn't add a few chapters to the traditional Vulgate. He comments it a little, and writes his own Gospel. Henceforth, he edges his way into the wrath of the difficult rascal, watches both Charleville and Paris with his own eyes and understands why it could not work long enough : it was a matter of verse one was expecting lights from that which would not be. It had been meant to fall short, useless and unbearable as it was.

CHECKERS
Board and Pieces of Official Colors as Stipulated by the American Checker Federation
The Black Checkers Are Invisible on the Black Squares.
Although the most widely available sets of checkers consist of black and red boards and pieces, they provide poor visibility, especially for the black pieces on the black squares. You would be able to see the black checkers, but it makes no sense to use checkers of the same color as the squares on which they are placed. If you have only black and red checkers, use a board of some other colors, from a chess set for example. If you have only a black and red board, perhaps you can use pieces of other colors from a backgammon game.
Which diagram is better?
The diagram on the left shows the pieces on the dark squares as they are in actual play. On the right is a diagram of the type usually seen in books and magazines in the United States. Players could make their own diagrams by first using one rubber stamp to make the board, and then four other stamps to put black and white men and kings on the board. By placing the pieces on the unhatched squares they avoided transparent images and blotches. Nowadays, with computers, there is no difficulty in making diagrams with the pieces on the hatched squares. Therefore, this method, which also produces a less crowded appearance, will be used throughout these pages. To make your own diagrams, similar to the one on the left, above, on a 64, 100 or 144-square board:

Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan The Black Doctor
Genre Short Story (25 pp.) Keywords Colonialism Death and Dying Family Relationships Heart Disease ... Professionalism Summary Dr. Aloysius Lana, a "Black Doctor" of Spanish ancestry, settled in a Lancashire town and courted Miss Frances Morton, a young woman of the local gentry. After he unexpectedly broke off their engagement, he was found dead, and Frances's brother was arrested. At the trial, Dr. Lana himself appeared: the corpse was instead his dissipated twin brother Ernest, dead of a heart attack. Ernest's secret arrival had forced Aloysius to dissolve his engagement, not wishing scandal; Ernest's death allowed Aloysius to create a new identity abroad, his future shattered. But, hearing that the death had been misdiagnosed as murder, Aloysius explained the situation, and he and the Mortons were reunited. Commentary This story presents a puzzle of mistaken diagnosis (heart attack or murder) in the context of a mistaken identity. Doyle suggests a slippage between difference and identity, but the story eventually realigns itself under traditional, conservative mores.
