Black Bindweed; Polygonum Convolvulus L.
Black Bindweed is like a shadow of our ubiquitous Wild Morning-Glory (Weed of the Month July 1987). Less showy, less common, less obnoxious, and comparatively unimportant, it still can be nearly as interesting. Although fascinatingly alike in its arrowhead leaf shape, and in being a weedy vining plant from the Old World, it is unrelated to the Morning Glory family. Instead it is in the Knotweed clan, which includes Creeping Knotweed, Silver Lace Vine, Bistort, Lady's Thumb, Docks, Sorrels, and Buckwheat. Some alternate names for Black Bindweed are: Climbing or Ivy Knotweed, Cornbind, Bearbind, Devil's Tether, and Wild Buckwheat. No better way to make it familiar than to compare it to common wild Morning Glory. The Morning Glory is a perennial with plump, far-reaching white roots; Black Bindweed is a summer annual with tough, slender yellow or brownish roots. Morning Glory chokes tightly and its stem exude a sticky white juice when wounded. Black Bindweed climbs loosely in a relaxed, almost languid manner, and has no milky juice. Morning Glory has showy, large white bell flowers glorious in the morning, but setting few seeds; Black Bindweed bears numerous tiny flowers, dingy and always unnoticed, making copious seeds. In brief, Black Bindweed is a smaller, seedy plant, not such an insatiable smothering curse. It is also found chiefly on

In 1922 he headed the American Negro Academy, an organization founded by Alexander Crummell in 1879 to promote black art, literature, and science. Schomburg, who died in 1938, collected thousands of works on black culture over his life time. In 1926 Schomburg's personal collection was purchased by the Carnegie Corporation and given to the New York Public Library. In 1973 the collection became known as the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History, the name was later changed to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. oodiscs #28 EDIBLE BLACK INK: ARTHUR JARVINEN
The Crazy Sound World of Arthur Jarvinen oodiscs #28, Edible Black Ink , by Arthur Jarvinen (b. 1956), is the debut CD by the West Coast's most notable Totalist composer. Ranging from the relentless rhythmic drive of Part III of The Queen of Spain to the subtle manipulation of pencil sharpener and window shutters, Jarvinen's sound world is original, accessible and highly sophisticated. In a general 'dumbing down' of music and culture, Art maintains a rigorous sense of complexity and swing at the same time. The music is performed by the highly esteemed California EAR Unit joined by the wailing sound of Vinnie Golia's Indian nagaswaram (conical oboe). Kyle Gann, new music critic for the VILLAGE VOICE, has written, "The style of the new generation is sometimes called Totalism , connoting a music that has its cake and eats it too, they can appeal to both chamber-music mavens and rock fans. New York has sprouted a dozen or so totalists, but the equally brash, if more laid-back, Los Angeles scene has produced only one highly visible example so far: Arthur Jarvinen." Jarvinen's own experience in rock, jazz and blues bands accounts not only for the rhythmic vitality characteristic of his works but for many of his orchestational preferences as well.

Trailblazers for the Next Generation
Contemporary African-American History Makers

by Sonya Stinson If you think of history as nothing but a dead, dull record of events that happened ages before you were even a thought, think again. Historyincluding African-American historyis a living, continuing story, and some of the most significant achievements in our history took place during your lifetime, in just the last 20 years or so. Some of these achievements are recent enough that you have witnessed them yourself, and someday you will recount them to your own children and grandchildren in stories that begin, "I remember when . . . . " The 10 African Americans profiled below will be remembered as pioneers in their fieldsbusiness, government, journalism, literature, medicine, religion, science and technology, the militarybut their legacy goes far beyond their titles of "first." As one of them remarked, "There may be significance in being the first, but there is more significance in being the second, third, fourth, and fifth." It is their commitment to make the way better for those that follow, to leave behind something that lasts longer than their own spotlight, that sets these trailblazers apart.
"I know I could never forgive myself if I elected to live without humane purpose . . . without recognizing that perhaps the surest joy in life comes with trying to help others."

Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventure Of Black Peter

I have never known my friend to be in better form, both mental and physical, than in the year '95. His increasing fame had brought with it an immense practice, and I should be guilty of an indiscretion if I were even to hint at the identity of some of the illustrious clients who crossed our humble threshold in Baker Street. Holmes, however, like all great artists, lived for his art's sake, and, save in the case of the Duke of Holdernesse, I have seldom known him claim any large reward for his inestimable services. So unworldly was he or so capricious-that he frequently refused his help to the powerful and wealthy where the problem made no appeal to his sympathies, while he would devote weeks of most intense application to the affairs of some humble client whose case presented those strange and dramatic qualities which appealed to his imagination and challenged his ingenuity.
In this memorable year '95, a curious and incongruous succession of cases had engaged his attention, ranging from his famous investigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca an inquiry which was carried out by him at the express desire of His Holiness the Pope down to his arrest of Wilson, the notorious canary-trainer, which removed a plague-spot from the East End of London. Close on the heels of these two famous cases came the tragedy of Woodman's Lee, and the very obscure circumstances which surrounded the death of Captain Peter Carey. No record of the doings of Mr. Sherlock Holmes would be complete which did not include some account of this very unusual affair.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Black Doctor

For the newcomer proved himself to be a capable surgeon and an accomplished physician. The practice of that district had been in the hands of Edward Rowe, the son of Sir William Rowe, the Liverpool consultant, but he had not inherited the talents of his father, and Dr. Lana, with his advantages of presence and of manner, soon beat him out of the field. Dr. Lana's social success was as rapid as his professional. A remarkable surgical cure in the case of the Hon. James Lowry, the second son of Lord Belton, was the means of introducing him to county society, where he became a favourite through the charm of his conversation and the elegance of his manners. An absence of antecedents and of relatives is sometimes an aid rather than an impediment to social advancement, and the distinguished individuality of the handsome doctor was its own recommendation.
His patients had one fault - and one fault only - to find with him. He appeared to be a confirmed bachelor. This was the more remarkable since the house which he occupied was a large one, and it was known that his success in practice had enabled him to save considerable sums. At first the local matchmakers were continually coupling his name with one or other of the eligible ladies, but as years passed and Dr. Lana remained unmarried, it came to be generally understood that for some reason he must remain a bachelor. Some even went so far as to assert that he was already married, and that it was in order to escape the consequence of an early misalliance that he had buried himself at Bishop's Crossing. And, then, just as the matchmakers had finally given him up in despair, his engagement was suddenly announced to Miss Frances Morton, of Leigh Hall.

Arthur Robert Ashe Arthur Ashe Poem Other Websites Photo Gallery Arthur Robert Ashe was born on July 10, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia and grew up there also. When he was still young his father was appointed as a special police officer at Brookfield park the biggest playground in Richmond. Arthur first picked up a tennis racket at the age of 6 and started playing at Brook field. He was a weak built child and sometimes felt discouraged, but he soon became a good player. Ashes life was turned upside down when his mother died because of complications during her third pregnancy. The memory of Ashes mother became an inspiration throughout his playing career. Ashe was then seen by Ronald Charity-one of the top black tennis players in the nation. Mr. Charity saw that Ashe was not your average tennis player. Mr. Charity referred him to Dr. Robert Walter Johnson. Ashe was to go there for the summer as a sort of tennis camp,Ashe would go there for 8 summers. In 1960 Ashe moved to St. Louis, Missouri for his senior year in High School. After finishing High School in 1960 he received a scholarship to UCLA. Ashe became a member of the collegiate tennis team. In 1965 he won both singles and doubles at the collegiate level. Ashe graduated from collage in 1966 and entered the army. Another important part of that year was that Ashe was recognized for his efforts on and of the court in his hometown of Richmond with a celebration called Arthur Ashe Day.

A Literary Historian Arthur A. Schomburg was born January 24, 1874 in San Puerto Rico to a German father and a West Indian mother. He spent most of his childhood in Puerto Rico. He attended St. Thomas College in the Virgin Islands and immigrated to the United States in 1891 where he began to work at a New York City Law office. While in New York, he began to collect literary works and visual art by and about people of the African decent. In 1911, Arthur and John E. Bruce founded the Negro Society for Historical Research as a base from which to publish black articles. In 1922, Schomburg was elected President of the American Negro Academy. He not only collected works by others but produces essays himself which later on went to be published. His collection of books, manuscripts and artifacts were invaluable resources and inspiration to both historian and Harlem Renaissance artists. Through his collections of art and literature by people of the African decent, Arthur sought to disprove the pseudo-scientific racism of the day.

Chapter One. Shows that a Good Beginning may Sometimes be Followed by a Bad Ending. "Six feet water in the hold, sir!" That would not have been a pleasant announcement to the captain of the 'Aurora' at any time, but its unpleasantness was vastly increased by the fact that it greeted him near the termination of what had been, up to that point of time, an exceedingly prosperous voyage. "Are you sure, Davis?" asked the captain; "try again." He gave the order under the influence of that feeling which is styled "hoping against hope," and himself accompanied the ship's carpenter to see it obeyed. "Six feet two inches," was the result of this investigation.
