Martin, POW/MIA; William A. Robinson; Thomas J. Curtis (returned POWs) REMARKS: 730212 RELSD BY DRV Source: Compiled from one or more of the following: raw data from U.S. Government agency sources, correspondence with POW/MIA families, published sources, interviews. Updated by the P.O.W. NETWORK in 1998. SYNOPSIS: On September 20, 1965, 1Lt. Duane W. Martin, co-pilot; Capt. Thomas J. Curtis, pilot; SSgt. William A. Robinson, flight engineer; and Airman Arthur N. Black, pararescue; comprised the crew and passengers of an HH43B "Huskie" helicopter operating about 10 miles from the border of Laos in Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam. The Huskie is typically a crash rescue helicopter, and although it was considered to be inadequate for Southeast Asia duty, the Air Force had no other options at the time. The increase in combat called for an ever increasing need for rescue services. Some of the Huskies were shored up with heavy armor plate to protect the crews, and outfitted with long cables to facilitate rescue in the high rain forest. During the period Martin, Curtis, Robinson and Black were on their mission in Ha Tinh Province, most of the rescue crews were dispatched out of Nakhon Phanom, Thailand and Bien Hoa, South Vietnam, both being stop-gap installations until the primary rescue agency, 3rd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group was formed at Tan Son Nhut in January 1966.

24. BLACK STUDIES
arthur Lewin's web page contains a short essay on the academic discipline of black Studies.
http://www.blackstudies.net/
BLACK STUDIES.NET History Education Culture Relationships Politics Stories Email Login post your message Have you heard those stories that Henry Louis Gates, Professor of Black Studies at Harvard, threatened to leave that institution and go to Princeton, and take two colleagues with him? And that Harvard and Princeton are now locked in a bidding war for all three of them? Make that two. Princeton just lured away one (a philosophy professor, Kwame Anthony Appiah.) Why, one might ask, are they being so hotly pursued? After all isn’t Black Studies under attack? Or is it? The discipline of Black Studies can be divided into two: nationalist and inclusionist. The inclusionists seek to work within the academy, as they study the history and development of Africans in America and advocate for their closer integration into society. Conversely, the nationalists put Africa first in their studies and call for a divorcement from European-centered ideas and institutions... It was during the sixties, during the last great cycle of Black activism, that Black Studies raucously breached the Ivory Tower. As that activist cycle inevitably waned, college officials began turning to those with inclusionist philosophies to develop and staff these programs. The pioneering nationalists naturally came to see the later comers as eroding the original thrust of the discipline. However, not surprisingly, the inclusionists see themselves as “rationally,” “scientifically” setting about establishing the field. Henry Louis Gates himself has said, "There’s a lot of energy these days in African American Studies, but there is a lot of wishful thinking too. You can’t make it up, man. You have to do the archival work.”

Status in 1973: Returned Prisoner Of War Category: Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: HH43B "Huskie" Other Personnel in Incident: Duane W. Martin (missing), Thomas J. Curtis and William A. Robinson (returned POWs) REMARKS: 730212 RELEASED BY DRV SYNOPSIS: The Kaman HH43 Huskie helicopter, nicknamed "Pedro," provided the only dedicated rescue capability early in the war and helped to develop many of the techniques which were later perfected by other rescue aircraft. The Huskie was also used extensively to provide airbase crash fire suppression. Thomas Curtis, William Robinson and Arthur Black were captured by the NVA, moved to a POW camp in North Vietnam where they were released during Operation Homecoming. Duane Martin was captured by Pathet Lao forces and immediately moved to a POW camp in Khammouan Province, Laos. This camp already housed Eugene DeBruin, Prasit Promsuwan, Prasit Dhanee, To Yick Chiu (Y. C. To) and Pisidhi Indradat; the surviving five crewmen from an Air America C46 aircraft shot down in 1963. Duane W. Martin is among nearly 600 Americans who disappeared in Laos. The Lao admitted holding "tens of tens" of American Prisoners of War, but these men were never negotiated for either by direct negotiation between our countries or the Paris Peace Accords since Laos was not a party to that agreement.

    The Barnacle, June 20, 2000
    by Arthur Black
An excerpt from a keynote speech delivered by Arthur Black to 550 foresters, government leaders and environmental representatives at the National Forest Millennial Conference in Thunder Bay, Ontario, earlier this month:
This was a personally poignant moment for me, because as I was talking on the phone to the conference chairman, I was looking out my window at a logging truck waddling down the road lugging a load of forty-foot fir logs. They are logging Salt Spring Island—quite literally, as I speak. And they’re logging it big time. "They" being a consortium known as Texada Land Corporation. Texada picked up 2,000 hectares of Salt Spring land—that’s about ten percent of the entire Island—and they’re currently logging about half an hectare a day. All of this does not sit well with perhaps 99 percent of the citizenry of Salt Spring, population 10,000, give or take. They mostly like their Island just the way it is.
What they see looks like a gigantic case of advanced ringworm.

    Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue
Moose catalogue is about being Canadian
Moose book is a good read
by Arthur Black Here are two ways to tell that Christmas is coming. Number one: every shopping mall you pass is playing a tinny version of The Little Drummer Boy, by the Harry Semeon Chorale. Number two: every time you turn around you stumble across another brand new Canadian book, freshly published in the hope you'll buy it to stuff in somebody's stocking. Sure are a lot of them. Pierre Berton; of course. And Margaret Atwood. And Peter Newman, Kurt Browning and Darryl Sittler to boot. Heck, even I have a seasonal hardcover offering, currently teetering half way between The New York Times bestseller list and the Coles remainders table. But the Canadian book that's captured my heart this year isn't an Ottawa expose or a Maritimes novel or the memoirs of some Bay Street robber baron. lt's a catalogue. In fact, it's official title is Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue. The ALWM catalogue is difficult to describe. Physically, it's 156 pages of print and photographs sandwiched between covers that measure l0 inches wide and 15 inches deep which is to say, large and ungainly. Kind of like a moose.

This comes after many years of trailblazing by talented black players against the racist attitudes of fans and the footballing authorities. What isn't so well known is just how long ago it was that the first black player took to the pitch in England. The first black person to play for a professional football club in England was a man named Arthur Wharton (1865 - 1930), who joined Preston North End as long ago as 1886. Arthur was born in Ghana in 1865 to a wealthy family of mixed race parents. His father was half-Grenadian and half-Scottish, and his mother was from Ghanaian royalty. In 1882, Arthur moved to England to train as a Methodist missionary at a school in Cannock, Staffordshire. However, he soon got bored of this academic and religious life and left the school to carve out a career using his sporting talents. He moved to the Durham area where he competed in athletics competitions, and in fact set a new world record of 10 seconds for the 100 yards dash at Stamford Bridge in July 1886. This success brought him invitations to compete in professional athletics tournaments where he could make a living from appearance fees and from betting dividends. His athletic prowess also brought him to the attention of professional football clubs.

    Black Medick; Medicago lupulina L.
Some weeds are absolute villains (to our way of thinking), while others compel us to temper our cursing with some grudging admissions, if not praise. A few plants, such as fennel, are so constituted that we bless them as saviors, damn them as pests, and variously eat 'em or beat 'em. Last month a miserable little runt known as Hop Clover (Trifolium dubium) was our highlighted weed. Now we introduce a close cousin, who is not so bad, so common, so small and weak. Black Medick (Medicago lupulina) bears the same relation in size to Hop Clover that rats do to mice: the heavyweight version. Both weeds, as usual, are of Old World origin. Both are low-growing, are often flattish, with tiny yellow flowers. Unlike Hop Clover, Black Medick is not, however, a wimpy little summer annual. It can overwinter. It can make tough stems as long as five feet. Its leaves are larger, hairier, and far more strongly flavored. Its seeds are black, not pale red-brown. Other names for Black Medick are: Black Hay, Black Nonesuch, Blackweed, Hop Medick, or Yellow Trefoil. Indeed, it also gets called Hop Clover. Mostly the name "Clover" is used for species of
