Summary:

Muslims and Christians Transcript of this program: More and more research is showing us that spirituality is not an acquired taste or a ‘virus’ that infects us. It is, rather, something that is innate, deeply wired into our bodies and souls. People who do not regularly attend a place of worship remain deeply aware of spiritual concerns and, it seems clear, that far from being taught spirituality by adults, children often have an in-born sense of the holy which can be driven out by grown-ups. The role of religion is not, of course, just a personal one, relating us to our spiritual roots and to the transcendent, to what is beyond us. This is hugely important but there is the social dimension as well. Religion is often seen as providing cohesion to societies and lies at the root of our law, institutions and values. But its role is not merely a conservative one, for religion can also challenge injustice in society. It can provide the resources, which the weak need to tackle those who have power over them. It can help people to mobilise so that they can achieve participatory communities. Religion can bring about the renewal of a community or even a nation: spiritual beliefs and values can nurture a social or a national vision of inclusion, the provision of all that makes for human flourishing and a sense of belonging to something which is greater than the sum of its parts. We neglect this aspect of religion at our peril.

Welfare - Challenges of the Coming Decade
Williamson Community Leadership Program Lecture
7 August, 1991 Bishop Michael Challen Bishop Challen is Adjunct Professor in the Division of Humanities at Curtin. He is ex-Director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence in Melbourne, one of the most influential welfare agencies in Australia. He has lived and worked amongst low-income people for 23 years. He believes that responsible ethical living is essential for human beings living as a society and for the realisation of their true nature. He was previously Assistant Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Perth. Congratulations to all of you for putting aside a large part of this year in order that you may have a wider and deeper perspective of life in our nation and your place in it. Congratulations to those of the Williamson Foundation who had the imagination and commitment to establish this first class venture in the training of leaders.
On Monday evening I happened to watch a segment of A Current Affair concerning the fallen and dubiously bankrupt Charles Skase. He is avoiding the Australian legal system by living in Spain within a 700 square metre house with swimming pool and tennis court. His current lifestyle is a sharp contradiction to his declared financial position. He, with others, illustrates how much our society can be hurt when people with undoubted gifts do not lose themselves in creative and compassionate leadership.
But not so with you! And to develop your own commitment to a more service style of leadership, I have been invited to speak to you about "welfare - challenges of the coming decade."

Asian bishop joins Lords

The bishop joins the Lords in the middle of a period of reform
The Bishop of Rochester has become the first Asian religious leader to sit in the House of Lords. Michael Nazir-Ali was born and raised in Pakistan. He joins 25 Church of England bishops in the upper house of the UK Parliament. The Bishop of Rochester: Looking forwarded to the Lords He became the first ethnic minority diocesan bishop in 1995 when he was appointed as Bishop of Rochester. Bishop Michael said beforehand that he was looking forward to the ceremony on Wednesday afternoon when he was introduced to the Lords by the Bishops of Southwark and Gloucester. "Of course, I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve the church in the House of Lords," he said. "Many of the issues discussed and debated there are common concerns facing us all and I look forward to making my own modest contribution." One of the key concerns of the occupants of the House of Lords is the threat to their own future from the government's plans to reform the upper chamber. The vast majority of hereditary peers - those who inherited their right to sit and vote in the House - will be removed from the Lords this summer.

Pope John Paul II has named St. Louis Auxiliary Bishop Michael J. Sheridan to serve as Coadjutor (co-uh-JOO-turr) Bishop of the Diocese of Colorado Springs in Colorado. Bishop Sheridan, 56, has served as an assistant bishop to St. Louis Archbishop Justin Rigali since 1997. Prior to his appointment as a bishop, he served as pastor of Immacolata Parish in Richmond Heights (1993-1997) and Christ the King Parish in University City (1988-93). Before becoming a pastor, he served as an assistant pastor at St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish in South St. Louis, St. Dismas Parish in Florissant, and Christ the King Parish. He also was a professor of theology at Kenrick Seminary for nearly a decade, and taught for a time at St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy High School. Bishop Sheridan, a native St. Louisan, was ordained a priest in 1971. By naming Bishop Sheridan a "coadjutor" bishop, Pope John Paul II has indicated that it will be Bishop Sheridan who ultimately will succeed the Diocese of Colorado Springs’ present leader, Bishop Richard C. Hanifen, 70, when Bishop Hanifen resigns his position sometime in the future. Founded in 1984, the Diocese of Colorado Springs covers ten counties in east-central Colorado. The diocese serves nearly 87,000 Catholics with 32 parishes, five elementary schools, one high school, and two Catholic hospitals. More information about the Diocese of Colorado Springs is available on the diocese’s website: www.diocesecs.org.

Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali: "A Future Free from Terror?"
"...the work of Opportunity International is so important in the Muslim world, to give people the means to earn their bread, perhaps to employ one or two people and it is from that, that there will be a genuine challenge to the kind of poverty that is such a breeding ground for extremist movements of all kinds."
Bishop Nazir-Ali Photo: Diocese of Rochester I’m very glad to be here to speak to this subject. It is obviously a subject that is very sensitive and yet at the same time extremely relevant to the world in which we live. And I want to begin really with some general observations about religious awareness or a spiritual sense. More and more research, scientific research, is saying now that religious awareness or a spiritual sense is innate in human beings. It is not something acquired. It is not a virus with which people are infected from outside but it is something deeply wired into the human psyche. Work with children, for instance, is also showing that children have an innate spirituality, which is often driven out of them by grown-up attitudes.
Of course religion is a very personal matter. It puts us in touch with our spiritual roots. It points us personally to what is beyond us to the transcendent. But it also has a social dimension, and that is something that is pertinent to what I have to say tonight. Quite often the function of religion in terms of social cohesion is pointed out. And it is true that for many societies religion provides the glue that sticks people together in particular communities and that it often lies at the root of many of our laws, our institutions and our values whether that is acknowledged or not.
