The Life and Times of Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming
By Fr. Kevin J. Kirley
Issue: June 2003
Brother J.B. Darcy, C.F.C., The Life and Times of Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming, O.S.F., Creative Publishers, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, 2003, p. 286, $18.25 Cdn. Reviewed by Kevin J. Kirley, C.S.B. Brother Darcy is disarmingly honest in his presentation of the conflicting evidence in this fascinating story. He makes no attempt to hide Bishop Fleming's shortcomings, nor those of the dissident Catholics who strove to undermine his efforts. He is fair in his treatment of 'the establishment,' that is, the governing body, the rich and influential merchants, the Anglican Church for whom this Catholic prelate was 'the very type of a primitive bishop.' But the author's main concern throughout the entire study is to arrive at the truth and hence to set the record straight. In the final analysis there is no doubt whose side he is on. Bishop Fleming's accomplishments are creditable indeed. Just to visit the Catholics of his far-flung vicariate, later diocese, required hazardous journeys over uncharted terrain and treacherous waters. Always short of funds, the bishop managed nonetheless to build numerous churches and to staff them with missionary priests from Ireland. He provided for the education of his people by introducing two communities of teaching Sisters and one of teaching Brothers. The well-being of poor families of fishermen, farmers, woodcutters, and miners was a constant concern of Bishop Fleming. He did what he could to help those burned out of house and home in St. John's after the great fire of 1846.

J. Grant Swank, Jr. CATHOLIC CONVICTION: BISHOP MICHAEL SHERIDAN: NO COMMUNION FOR ANY CATHOLIC SUPPORTING IMMORALITY By J. Grant Swank, Jr. May 17, 2004 So there really is Christian conviction within some of the Catholic clergy in the USA. That is, there are those who see clearly that biblical morality is worth defending instead of double-speaking one’s way into opportunism of one temporary advantage or another. So it is that Bishop Michael Sheridan, spiritual leader of the second-largest Roman Catholic diocese, stands alongside Holy Scripture. Instead of cowering before egocentric disobedient so-called Christians who continue daily to see through their own religious agendas rather than God’s revealed truth, Sheridan stands squarely for God’s ethic. May his voice echo through other larynxes.

Bishop Michael J. Hoban
Bishop Michael J. Hoban Outstanding as had been the feats of the founding prelate, his successor earned for himself a similar reputation. Bishop Michael J. Hoban, a native of the Diocese and first pastor of Saint Leo's Parish in Ashley, had assumed the office of Coadjutor to Bishop O'Hara on March 22, 1896, the day of his Episcopal Ordination. On February 3, 1899, he became the Ordinary of the Diocese. The next twenty-seven years were years of achievement. In the interim, the Diocese had grown to include 341 priests, 202 parishes, nine teaching orders of sisters, five communities of sisters with specialized apostolates, 65 parochial schools, three colleges, and four custodial institutions. But important as were those material successes, his spiritual accomplishments were perhaps even greater. Ethnic problems, not of his own making, brought schism to Northeastern Pennsylvania. His charitable and judicious approach, however, stemmed the tide and prevented far worse effects from occurring. It had been a difficult task. His death on November 13, 1926, marked the end of an era. Main History Page

Bishop Michael Doe begins work as USPG General Secretary Bishop Michael brings a wealth of experience to the position of General Secretary. A graduate in theology and sociology at Durham University, Bishop Michael trained for ordination at Ripon Hall, Oxford, where he developed an interest in urban ministry. He went on to spend much of the past 30 years helping to meet the material, social and spiritual needs of people living on large culturally-diverse housing estates: first in Morden, South London, then in Oxford, and most recently in Swindon, where he was made bishop in 1994. As well as bridging gaps across economic and cultural divides in Britain, Bishop Michael also has experience of crossing international barriers. During the 1970s, as the national youth officer for the British Council of Churches, Michael worked with Christian youth leaders in East Germany and the Soviet Union – leading to one occasion when he was detained by police for two days in East Berlin: to this day he doesn't know what the confession said that he was forced to sign to secure his release! Other overseas involvement has included reconciliation work among Palestinian refugees in Beirut and helping to run Swindon's diocesan link with Uganda.

Called to Common Witness - Bishop Michael Putney
In 1981 the Joint Working Group between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches produced a report entitled, Common Witness. I would like to quote a paragraph from it: When he prayed that all be one so the world might believe (John 17:21), Jesus made a clear connection between the unity of the Church and the acceptance of the Gospel. Unhappily Christians are still divided in their churches and the testimony they give to the Gospel is thus weakened. There are, however, even now many signs of the initial unity that already exists among all followers of Christ and indications that it is developing in important ways. What we have in common, and the hope that is in us, enable us to be bold in proclaiming the Gospel and trustful that the world will receive it. Common witness is the essential calling of the Church and in an especial way it responds to the spirit of this ecumenical age in the Church’s life. It expresses our actual unity and increases our service to God’s word, strengthening the churches both in proclaiming the Gospel and in seeking for the fullness of unity. I would like to repeat the second last sentence: “Common witness is the essential calling of the Church and in an especial way it responds to the spirit of this ecumenical age in the Church’s life.” In describing what common witness might involve, the text emphasised two different dimensions. Firstly: “Through proclaiming the cross and resurrection of Christ, they affirm (i.e. those engaged in common witness) that God wills the salvation of his people in all dimensions of their being, eternal and earthly.” Secondly, it recognised: “(Common witness) means Christian involvement in matters of social justice in the name of the poor and the oppressed.”

Diocese of New Westminster Bishop Michael Ingham authorises gay blessings - 29th May 2003
On 29 th In a letter accompanying the rite, Bishop Ingham commented: "This is not a marriage ceremony, but a blessing of permanent and faithful commitments between persons of the same sex in order that they may have the support and encouragement of the church in their lives together under God." He stated that couples who seek the blessing must receive preparation and instruction, and be supported and sustained by the parish throughout their lives together. "The church recognises that homosexual couples face the same challenges and share the same responsibilities as other people in living out the costly demands of love. Our purpose is to encourage and strengthen fidelity and mutual supportiveness in family life on which the stability of our wider society depends." Commenting on the statement issued by the Primates meeting in Brazil, he said: "The Primates are faithfully reflecting the lack of theological consensus in the Communion. And yet they are also recognising that gay and lesbian Christians are part of the church and are not going away." He said that he and his diocese agreed with the Primates that there is a "duty of pastoral care that is laid upon all Christians to respond with love and understanding to people of all sexual orientations." In a press statement the Archbishop of Canterbury said: "As the recent Primates' meeting made clear, the public liturgy of the Church expresses the mind of the Church on doctrinal matters and there is nothing approaching a consensus in support of same-sex unions. In taking this action and ignoring the considerable reservations of the Church, repeatedly expressed and most recently by the Primates, the diocese has gone significantly further than the teaching of the Church or pastoral concern can justify and I very much regret the inevitable tension and division that will result from this development."

Canadian Bishop prepares to allow gay weddings Church of England Newspaper - 30 May 2002
The Bishop of New Westminster, Michael Ingham, a leading liberal Canadian Anglican bishop, is on the verge of allowing homosexual couples to 'marry' in his diocese, prompting protests by evangelicals and traditionalists. Bishop Ingham is planning to give his consent to 'Motion 9' a request to offer a service of blessing for homosexuals which was passed narrowly by his diocesan Synod in 1998 and received a second, larger 'yes' vote in 2001.
It is believed that Bishop Ingham will give his consent without a further vote, hoping to head off division by offering a conscience clause for mainstream Anglicans and appointing a short-term Episcopal visitor for parishes which dissent from his decision. But traditionalists in the 'Essentials' coalition are already petitioning Archbishop David Crawley of the Province of British Columbia and Yukon for a separate, non-geographic diocese, arguing that the "unprecedented changes in doctrine, discipline and moral norms" require unprecedented change in the structure of the Canadian Anglican Episcopacy. The petition to Archbishop Crawley, which is still being circulated in parishes in New Westminster, argues that the "irreconcilable differences on matters of doctrine and moral teaching… are beyond the remedy of a conscience clause."

Schema-Bishop Michael Of Chistopol
Bishop Michael (Yershov) was born on September 17, 1911, in the village of Mamykovo in Kazan province, in a peasant family. His father, Basil, was a Bolshevik. His mother's name was Daria. The father persecuted the son and did not allow him to go to church, as a result of which he went blind. Afterwards, when he repented, he recovered his sight. When Michael was twelve years old, he was receiving communion a church in Chistopol when an elder saw him and said: "This lad will take upon himself the sins of the whole people." He was tonsured into the mantia in 1927, and in 1928 was ordained to the diaconate. In 1930 he was ordained to the priesthood by the Catacomb Archbishop and future Hieromartyr Nectarius (Trezvinsky) in Kazan. He then wandered from place to place serving Christians of the Catacomb Church. Fr. Michael's first arrest was on March 3, 1931, for the Faith and the Orthodox Church. He was condemned to eight years in prison for anti-Soviet agitation. He was arrested a second time on December 12, 1943, for church preaching; and on August 18, 1944 he was sentenced to death by shooting. He spent 81 days in the death cell; they starved him the whole time. On November 9, 1944, they commuted the death sentence to 15 years' hard labour. Fr. Michael passed through almost all the prisons of the Soviet Gulag: Kazan, Arzamas, Vorkuta, Olga, Bannino, Sakhalin, Nagayeva, Magadan, Suman, Kolyma, Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, Bratsk, Taipet...

Bishop Michael Jarrell's Columns
January 2003 February 2003 March 2003 April 2003 ... December 2003 January 2003 It is commonly agreed that the State of Louisiana faces a major challenge in the education of its young people. For years we have heard that education must be a priority for state and local governments. In recent years, the State of Louisiana has implemented a program to raise standards and improve the education of its students in public schools. In the process of evaluating the schools, the state has judged some schools to be in need of corrective action. These are sometimes referred to as "failing schools".
At the present time, most of these schools are in Orleans Parish, which has thousands of students in schools that are considered to be failing. The plan the state has in place calls for even higher standards over the next few years. It is assumed that more schools throughout the state will be judged to be failing in their mission to educate our children. State legislators have been interested in various plans to improve education in the state. One proposal is to provide vouchers to parents who may choose to take their child out of a corrective action school and place them in another school, perhaps to a private school, even one sponsored by a religious denomination.
Right away this raises the question of the relationship between church and state. Is it legal in the United States for a state to provide education vouchers to parents to be used at a private religious school? The answer is "yes". In the year 2001, the United States Supreme Court approved just such a plan in the state of Ohio. Our Louisiana legislators have taken note of this development and it is expected that in the spring session of the Louisiana legislature a similar bill will be filed. The particulars remain to be seen, but the basic plan is already under discussion.

Ecumenism in Australia today
In the past 20 years, there have been a number of major events which have shaped the contemporary ecumenical movement in Australia. The first of these was the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia Another major ecumenical event in recent years was the formation of the National Council of Churches of Australia in 1994. This Council is significant, not only because of the inclusion of the Roman Catholic Church for the first time, but also because of its new constitution and its giving a new impetus to ecumenical relations on the national level. These relations have continued to deepen, and around Australia many rejoiced that at the forum this year the Lutheran Church of Australia became a full member. This same Lutheran Church achieved its own internal union within Australia only in 1965. A similar event of some significance, especially for Queensland, was the formation of

Peace Be With You
Statement on War With Iraq
by Bishop Michael Pfeifer, OMI Breaking the Cycle of Violence, Creating Circles of Peace Bishop Michael Pfeifer, OMI, is Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of San Angelo and President of the Texas Conference of Churches As the drumbeat of war against Iraq rings loudly in our ears, the gentle but challenging message of the Risen Christ pierces our hearts and souls: "Peace be with you." [John 20:19] As leaders of our country prepare for war with Iraq, followers of Christ should intensify their prayers and efforts for peace. Peace is a gift from God and God's children need to humbly ask for this gift and to open their hearts and hands to receive it. The prophetic vision of peace appeals to the conscience of all those who, in these decisive days, can influence the future of peace, because, in the end, it is conscience that will have the last word, stronger than all strategies and all ideologies. We should have no illusions about the behavior or intentions of the Iraqi government. The Iraqi government must cease its internal repression, end its threats to its neighbors, stop any support for terrorism, abandon its efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction, and destroy all such existing weapons. People of good will may differ on how to apply just war norms in particular cases, especially when events are moving rapidly and the facts are not all together clear. It is difficult to justify our country's resort to war against Iraq, lacking clear and adequate evidence of an imminent attack of a grave nature. With other Christian leaders, I believe that the resort to war, under present circumstances and in light of current public information, would not meet the strict Christian conditions for overriding the strong presumption against military force. Pope John Paul II has stated, "War is not always inevitable. It is always a defeat for humanity….war is never just another means that one can choose to employ for settling differences between nations."

Thirty-fifth Anniversary - September 14, 1998
Address by Bishop Michael Ingham
Is Tolerance Enough?
New Hopes and New Obstacles to Religious Unity
The Global Ethic represents an effort by world religions to address problems together. It has stimulated many people to think about the possibilities of inter-religious cooperation to relieve the hardships of our world and to face its challenges in a spirit of partnership rather than competition. This is not an easy task, because we are not starting from scratch. Religions have a history of relationships with each other. Some of it has been hostile and violent. There are many victims of inter-religious strife, and we are surrounded by people who bear the marks of suffering in their lives and in their communities at the hands of religion. Even well- intentioned and gentle practitioners of faith in many of the traditions have been taught that partnership with other believers, dialogue and cooperation with other faiths, is a betrayal of belief, a blasphemy against God. Despite all this, there are urgent reasons to do challenge these inherited suspicions and to find new visions to overcome these historic antipathies. We are aware, as no generation before us has been aware, of the fragile nature of life on this planet. We face enormous challenges in safeguarding humanity's future, in preserving environmental integrity, in ensuring equitable and sustainable development. We know this is a spiritual task and not simply a political task because it involves the way people believe, the way they live their lives, the way they see the very nature and purpose of human existence.
