    Quotes [Opening Narration]
Control Voice : "God looked upon his world and called it good. But man was not content. He looked for ways to make it better and built machines to do the work. But in vain we build the world, unless the builder also grows." Cutler : "Well there's the end of your story. Everybody can sleep easy tonight. That terrible monster won't harm anybody ever again. He's as dead as old Doc Link's dream."
Ellis : "It's not the end of the story, its just the beginning." [Closing Narration] Control Voice : "Out of every disaster a little progess is made. Man will build more robots and learn how to make them better. And, given enough time, he may learn how to do the same for himself."

One of the most persuasive themes in literature is that of the artificial servant. In his 1921 play "RUR," Karel Capek named his artificial servants "robots," from the Czech word robota , which roughly translates as "unwilling worker." (It could also mean "someone who does boring work.") That name has stuck with us ever since, and despite other namesandroid (human-shaped artificial being), cyborg (cybernetic organism, implying part machine, part living tissue), droid, and so onrobot is likely to be the definitive label for some decades to come.
Isaac Asimov began writing his robot stories in the 1940s, and published the first compendium volume, I, Robot , in 1950. The Three Laws of Robotics first appeared together in Asimov's story "Runaround," published in Astounding Science Fiction in March of 1942. In a conversation in December of 1940, Campbell presented the rules to Asimov as a fait accompli , saying that he had abstracted them from principles made obvious in the stories themselves.

    Written by Robert C. Dennis
Based on "I, Robot" by Eando Binder (pseudonym for Earl and Otto Binder)
Dr. Charles Link, a small-town research scientist, constructs a robot. When Link is murdered, the robot, Adam, is blamed and declared to be a Frankenstein monster. Grotesque in size and appearance, Adam has a computer brain imbued with a gentle personality and most human capabilities.
Apprehended, the robot is threatened with destruction by authorities. Nina, Link's niece, gets Adam a defense attorney, Thurman Cutler, to force the matter into court for an official judgment in a trial without precedent.

Comments What? I thought you were a fan of ST:Enterprise, annoying theme-song-with-lyrics notwithstanding. Posted by John on Tuesday January 20, 2004 at 10:09 AM Whoops! Never mind. I thought this was posted by ST-FanBoy JP. Posted by John on Tuesday January 20, 2004 at 10:15 AM Enterprise is a great idea. It's got some good actors in it. I love the idea of the smaller ship, exploring for the first time, etc. But why the "time war" plot? Why do they constantly steal ideas from other shows, especially the original series, instead of doing new stuff? Sigh. What a waste. At least the Bandai model should be out before they cancel, if they cancel.

    The Outer Limits: "I, Robot"
    Season 2, Episode 9
    First aired: November 14, 1964
    by Jason Warren
Starring Howard da Silva, Leonard Nimoy, Marianna Hill, Red Morgan, Ford Rainey, Ken Drake, John Hoyt, Robert Sorrells, Hugh Sanders, Peter Brocco and Christine Matchett. Adam's voice was provided by John Caper Jr. Teleplay by Robert C. Dennis based upon the short story "I, Robot" which was written Earl and Otto Binder. Directed by Leon Benson. After its creator dies under mysterious circumstances, a robot named Adam Link (Red Morgan) is put on trial for murder. Instead of backwoods settings and distant planets, this episode of "The Outer Limits" actually takes place primarily within a courtroom (a setting in which producer Ben Brady was certainly more comfortable). In essence, man's desire for future knowledge and progress is put on trial here by a public fearful of the consequences of change. It's an intriguing and unique idea and certainly worthy of thought and discourse. What I really like about this one is both sides are given a chance to present their case. Some really good questions are raised by the prosecution with regards to Adam's lack of knowledge and experience when dealing with humans, not to mention the fact he at times seems unaware of his own strength. The defense of course argues that Adam is invaluable as a symbol of progress and a creation man can learn from.

Isaac Asimov Presents The Great SF Stories 1 (1939), DAW books paperback, 1979. Edited by Isaac Asimov and Martin H. Greenberg. I came across this volume, the first in a series, by chance, whilst browsing www.alibris.com. Prior to the late 1950s, Year's Best type anthologies were fairly rare. Everett F. Bleiler and T.E. Dikty produced several, starting in 1949, and whilst Edmund Crispin's Best SF (1955) and subsequent volumes were well-regarded, they weren't annual collections. Judith Merril had a series which started in 1956 and ran through until the mid 1960s, when the likes of Aldiss/Harrison, Wollheim and Carr, and in the 1970s Del Rey and then Dozois kept the Years Best SF flag flying. All but the Bleiler/Ditky books are relatively commonplace in second-hand bookstores, which means that from the mid 1950s to date there is not too much of a problem locating good short SF. Prior to that date it is retrospective collections such as this which have to fill the gap. The book in hand contains some 19 stories, from names which are still well known today (Robert Bloch, Lester Del Ray, L. Sprague De Camp, A.E. Van Vogt, Isaac Asimov etc.) to the less well known nowadays (Eando Binder, Nelson Bond, Joseph E. Kelleam). Isaac Asimov provides an introduction to each story, and the book gives the reader an opportunity to travel back in time some sixty years. So what does this reader get from a collection of stories some twenty years older than he? In the order in which they appear:

I would especially like to hear if the new font is more readable... I'm also doing some fan art for some other webcomics. At least three have been put up.... Mindmistress meets Courtney Brightland of SKIRTING DANGER in COMPARING FASHION NOTES Mindmistress gets a tour of the Academy of Superhero Science by VINDIBUDD at CROSSOVER CONVERSATION Mindmistress also meets the crew at VIGIL in BRAIN-BABE'S BYE-BYE (Scroll towards the bottom.) I've also updated the GUEST ART page to reflect those links. I've also updated the UNEASY ENEMES, UNLIKELY ALLIES page, adding Moodswing. I did an article recently for that Wold Newton/fictional characters group I belong to...this one about Ted Kord, the third Blue Beetle. You can see the results below...don't take them seriously, of course. Just treat it as literary gamesmanship... I want to thank Kai Jansson for many stimulating suggestions and theories, especially concerning the second Dan Garrett and the parentage of Kelly Garrett, one of Charlies' Angels. Tom Kane contributed some theories concerning Dr. Link. Another person suggested that Magnus Robot Fighter might be related to Doc Magnus of the Metal Men, and then dismissed it as too fantastic-unfortunately, I didn't keep a record of who said that. If there's anyone else who's theory I've used without credit, my apologies-it certainly is not intentional. In any case, my thanks to all of you.
