Ambrose Bierce (1842-c1914)
Bibliographic Notes: First published in c1891.
On foot, from necessity or in deference to his dismounted commander or associates, his conduct was the same. He would stand like a rock in the open when officers and men alike had taken cover; while men older in service and years, higher in rank and of unquestionable intrepidity, were loyally preserving behind the crest of a hill lives infinitely precious to their country, this fellow would stand, equally idle, on the ridge, facing in the direction of the sharpest fire. When battles are going on in open ground it frequently occurs that the opposing lines, confronting each other within a stone's throw for hours, hug the earth as closely as if they loved it. The line officers in their proper places flatten themselves no less, and the field officers, their horses all killed or sent to the rear, crouch beneath the infernal canopy of hissing lead and screaming iron without a thought of personal dignity. I did not accept the brutal wager; I thought they would. Let me do justice to a brave man's memory; in all these needless exposures of life there was no visible bravado nor subsequent narration. In the few instances when some of us had ventured to remonstrate, Brayle had smiled pleasantly and made some light reply, which, however, had not encouraged a further pursuit of the subject. Once he said:

"What is this all about?" inquired the New Idol.
"Father of Joy and Gore," said the High Priest, "be patient and I will instruct you in the doctrines and rites of our holy religion."
A year later, after a course of study in theology, the Idol asked to be thrown into the river, declaring himself an atheist.
"Do not let that trouble you," said the High Priest "so am I." Ambrose Bierce , "Two Sceptics," Fantastic Fables Religions are conclusions for which the facts of nature supply no major premises. ABASEMENT n.
A decent and customary mental attitude in the presence of wealth of power. Peculiarly appropriate in an employee when addressing an employer.
ABATIS n.
Rubbish in front of a fort, to prevent the rubbish outside from molesting the rubbish inside.
ABDICATION n.
An act whereby a sovereign attests his sense of the high temperature of the throne. Poor Isabella's Dead, whose abdication
Set all tongues wagging in the Spanish nation.
For that performance 'twere unfair to scold her:
She wisely left a throne too hot to hold her.
To History she'll be no royal riddle
Merely a plain parched pea that jumped the griddle. - G.J.
ABDOMEN n.
The temple of the god Stomach, in whose worship, with sacrificial rights, all true men engage. From women this ancient faith commands but a stammering assent. They sometimes minister at the altar in a half-hearted and ineffective way, but true reverence for the one deity that men really adore they know not. If woman had a free hand in the world's marketing the race would become graminivorous.

Literary San Francisco: Ambrose Bierce Long before Caen , Hoppe, Delaplane Morse , or Hinckle ; ages before both Matier and Ross, and about a hundred years before Mister SF's father learned to walk, there was Ambrose Bierce . Bierce created the first recognized newspaper column in the U.S. His "Prattles" ran in the Examiner for thirty years beginning in the late 1800s. Bierce continued a style of news commentary and reportage he used earlier in his "Telegraphic Jottings," and in the News Letter's "Town Crier." His rapier criticism and bold satirical invective was aimed at just about everything and everybody corrupt in the eyes of Bierce. He took on other writers and even the Examiner. With that his aim was to "purify journalism in this town by instructing such writers as it is worthwhile to instruct, and assassinating those that it is not." Blurring the line between social philosopher and humorist, Bierce was a self appointed hypocrisy detector. He wrote, "Truth is better than anything or all things; the next best thing to truth is the absence of error." mistersf.com home

One sunny autumn afternoon a child strayed away from its rude home in a small field and entered a forest unobserved. It was happy in a new sense of freedom from control, happy in the opportunity of exploration and adventure; for this child's spirit, in bodies of its ancestors, had for thousands of years been trained to memorable feats of discovery and conquestvictories in battles whose critical moments were centuries, whose victors' camps were cities of hewn stone. From the cradle of its race it had conquered its way through two continents and passing a great sea had penetrated a third, there to be born to war and dominion as a heritage. The Now that the battle had been won, prudence required that he withdraw to his base of operations. Alas; like many a mightier conqueror, and like one, the mightiest, he could not curb the lust for war

Graphic Classics: Ambrose Bierce
To set your wisdom (holding not a doubt of it,
Although in truth there's neither bone nor skin to it)
At work upon a book, and so read out of it
The qualities that you have first read into it.
A cynic's definition of 'review,' from The Devil's Dictionary The 19th century American satirist Ambrose Bierce is still quoted in the press today. His epigrams are a convenient short cut for writers who can't think up their own introductions, and his works are conveniently and gratifyingly timeless. This adaptation presents a selection of them with illustrations that, for the most part, work well enough to be laugh-out-loud funny, proving that the heart of the zeitgeist is timeless - it only has to be reinterpreted. Bierce is recognised as one of the greatest modern satirists and his work stands up well enough on its own. But as its name suggests, the Graphic Classic series of books renovates the work of immortal authors and presents it to comic book readers who, the venture implies, might otherwise not come across them. It is a worthy cause but, thankfully, not one that produces well-meaning tosh. Bierce himself, this book's introduction tells us, appreciated the power of illustrated satire, was in awe of those who produced it and would have done so himself if he had the talent to draw as well as write.
