Ambrose Bierce
A mbrose Bierce was the author of supernatural stories that have secured his place in both the weird tradition and in American letters at large. The stories in his two primary volumes, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (a.k.a., In the Midst of Life , 1892) and Can Such Things Be? (1893) often added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe. He is also noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser (1868-72), writing the entries of the "Town Crier" which constituted the first real newspaper column. Perhaps we can say that his true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography. In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast and was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgement could "make or break" an aspiring author's reputation. Well-known by his mere initials, A.G.B., his enemies and detractors called him "Almighty God Bierce." He was also nicknamed "Bitter Bierce" and his nihilistic motto was "Nothing matters." Apart from a few well-anthologized ghost stories (notably, "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge"), Bierce is best remembered for his cynical but humorous Devil's Dictionary (see Publishing News, below).

AMBROSE BIERCE (1842- ca.1914)
Tales of Soldiers and Civilians . San Francisco: E. L. G. Steele, 1891. Tales of Soldiers and Civilians , Bierce's first collection of short stories, is also his best and most well known work. In ten soldier stories and nine civilian tales, Bierce displays the literary style for which he is famous: an eccentric taste for the bizarre, sardonic and cynical. In the soldier's story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the tale of a hanging, the reader is shocked, perhaps even a little cheated, by the unexpected ending. In the civilian tale, "A Watcher of the Dead," a weird story about a strange wager concerning a dead body, one is kept in a state of suspended horror. In reading Bierce's Tales , it is tempting to make comparisons with Edgar Allan Poe or O. Henry - comparisons which always annoyed Bierce. Tales was rejected by leading publishers and had to be privately printed and financed by Bierce's merchant friend, E. L. G. Steele. Copies were bound in grey, brown and green cloth, with the title and author's name stamped in gold on the spine and diagonally across the lower fore-edge corner of the front cover. The copy displayed is in grey cloth.

"Bitter Bierce" - American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist, an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His end is still a mystery, but he is presumed to have died in the siege of Ojinega on 11 January 1914. Bierce is best-known for his numerous short stories collected in TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. However, Bierce himself was annoyed by comparisons, and as a literary critic he was against realism. When Stephen Crane published his novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Co... by Janice Albert WOMAN, n. As often as I have set out to write about Ambrose Bierce as a California Author, I have turned aside from the task, principally because it's so very hard to be in the presence of his cynical pessimism for very long. Then I am reminded of the hold he has over the American imagination, and I try again to deal with the question of why we should know more about him. His story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," is taught to school children throughout the land. In addition, the legend of Bierce-his disappearance at age 71 near the Mexican border-continues to inspire travelers and speculators; recently, for example, "The Devil and Ambrose Bierce" by Jacob Silverstein in the February 2002 issue of the esteemed Harper's Magazine . He has inspired hundreds of articles, books and dissertations, and drawn the attention of men of letters of the caliber of Clifton Fadiman and Carey McWilliams. Besides, his vitriolic attacks were not only directed at women (see above). He attacked men and women with equal force, although perhaps more men than women because at the time they operated in a larger and more varied sphere. From 1887 to 1896, at the height of his career, he wrote as a columnist for the Sunday Edition of Hearst's San Francisco

Ambrose Gwinett Bierce (1842-ca.1914) Ambrose Gwinett Bierce may very well be one of the first cynics in American writing. This cynicism is evident throughout many of his works, notwithstanding "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and developed over a lifetime of trouble despite his successful writings. Bierce did not view his cynical views of life as coming from a bad perspective. In fact, in one of his later works The Devil's Dictionary Bierce defines a cynic as " A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be" ("Fierce..."). His cynicism later coined him the name "Bitter Bierce." Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24,1842 in Meige County, Ohio. Although sources vary, Bierce was either 1 of 9 (ABAS) or 1of 12 children all of whose names began with "A" (Tangled...). He came from a poor farming family, all of whom he detested with the exception of his oldest brother, Albert. Little is known about Bierce's education. Rumors are that he attended the Kentucky Military Academy for one year at the age of 17. With this education he joined the 9th Regiment Indiana Infantry Volunteers in 1861 (Fettinger). He quickly became a

http://home.earthlink.net/~poetry61-65/authors/ambrose.html
Ambrose Bierce, best known for his biting wit and masterful short stories, served for three years as a sergeant of volunteers with the 9th Indiana Regiment. Bierce, who originally signed three-month enlistment papers in 1861 at the age of 18, saw his first major action at Shiloh in April of 1862. That experience and the many others that followed left him a changed and disillusioned man. Many of his short stories, including the well-known and beautifully written Incident at Owl Creek Bridge , are based on his recollections of the War. Bierce disappeared from public view in 1914 when he failed to return from a trip into war-torn Mexico. It has long been presumed that he was either a casualty of that war or the victim of bandits, but recent research suggests that Bierce, who hated the public spectacle associated with funerals and whose health had long been in decline, may have committed suicide in a secluded spot in the desert. At any rate, no trace of him has ever been found.
