    John Betjeman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sir John Betjeman ) was a British poet and writer on architecture . He was born in Highgate London , his surname indicating his Dutch ancestry. He left Magdalen College, Oxford without a degree due to lack of work which resulted in his failing his divinity exams. In his verse autobiography Summoned by Bells (1960), Betjeman tells the story of his early life, up to his employment as a teacher at a preparatory school Later, Betjeman obtained employment as a journalist, before joining the civil service. It has recently been revealed that his wartime duties entailed providing secret intelligence reports. Betjeman never took himself too seriously. His poems are often humorous, and in later life he enjoyed a career as a broadcaster, his popularity being in no small measure due to his bumbling image. He became Poet Laureate in 1972, succeeding Cecil Day Lewis . One of his first duties was to produce a poem in honour of the wedding of Princess Anne From A Few Late Chrysanthemums Oh little body, do not die. The soul looks out through wide blue eyes so questioningly into mine, that my tormented soul replies: "Oh little body, do not die. You hold the soul that talks to me, although our conversation be as wordless as the windy sky.

    Sir John Betjeman
Sir John Betjeman is buried at St. Enodoc's Church, Trebetherick, North Cornwall. His grave is located near the south side of the church. The church itself is approached via the 10th fairway of the golf course. Betjeman died in Trebetherick on 19 May, 1984. He had a lifelong love of Cornwall and in particular North Cornwall. There are many beautiful evocations of the Cornish landscape to be found in his poetry such as Cornish Cliffs By the Ninth Green, St Enodoc Tregardock and Old Friends At a time when many others poets were experimenting with free verse - Betjeman stuck firmly to traditional verse forms and rhyme schemes. However, the subject matter of his poetry was modern and accessible and proved popular with the general reading public.
    Gravestone of John Betjeman
St Enodoc's Church His witty tone often led to him being dismissed by the critics as 'light-weight' - but beneath the surface his poems are often profoundly serious. The chilling poem Loneliness from his 1974 collection A Nip in the Air shows Betjeman's deep fear of death Larkin and Auden were both great admirers of Betjeman.

Description
60. North Cornwall - Sir John Betjeman, Cornwall
EVERYWHERE The words of Sir john betjeman, extolling the beauty of North Cornwall and indeed the County s coast and countryside.
    http://www.north-cornwall.com/betjeman.htm
    "SPLENDOUR, SPLENDOUR EVERYWHERE..........."
The words of Sir John Betjeman, extolling the beauty of North Cornwall and indeed the County's coast and countryside John Betjeman was born in London in 1906 and died in 1994 at Trebetherick, Daymer Bay, a place he grew to know and love as his parents had a house there where he spent his early holidays exploring the sands of Daymer and the Camel Estuary. "And the silver snake of the estuary curls to sleep In Daymer Bay". This playground was an education in itself for Sir John and the freedom he must have enjoyed in his youth influenced his attitude to the formality of academics and his wish to be an independent and free spirit. As the years rolled on his poetry and prose associated with Cornwall (such as "the Shell Guide to Cornwall" and "Summoned by Bells") became real gems and of great public interest. Knighted in 1969, Betjeman became Poet laureate IN 1972, AN HONOUR NOT ALWAYS APPRECIATED by those who wish poetry to be more obscure and difficult to appreciate. Sir John's work was more nostalgic and whimsical, perhaps best enjoyed by his contemporaries able to have more of a feel for the images his work conjured up. His poetry about North Cornwall still fits the scenery today and, hopefully, will do so forever. It describes wonderfully the beauty that surrounds you and in its way complements and enhances the landscape and history of the area. "Betjeman's Cornwall", published by John Murray of London, is probably the best you could read when considering, or actually on, holiday in North Cornwall. You can follow the footsteps of Betjeman leading to hidden coves, enigmatic churches giving you ideas on how to enjoy the area by being as inquisitive as he was on so many excursions.
