Betjeman, John Death in Leamington
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Caregivers Death and Dying Grief ... Nursing Summary A nurse enters an elderly woman's bedroom. "Wake up! It's nearly five," she cries. Does she mean five AM, or is it afternoon teatime? The nurse lets the window blinds unroll and puts some coal on the fire in the fireplace. In fact, the patient is dead. She had died the previous evening, "by the light of the ev'ning star." Setting aside her "chintzy cheeriness," the nurse begins to pay attention. She looks "at the gray, decaying face," realizing what has happened. Her response is simply to straighten up a bit and leave the room. [28 lines] Commentary This poem is infused with loneliness and despair. Death is inevitable, of course, but we yearn for our lives to make a difference in the world, and for our deaths to have meaning. The only thing we know about this woman's life narrative is that she died alone, and, at least within the frame of these 8 quatrains, there is no one to mourn her. Life goes on. Though her death was certainly expected, she had lived in a world of "chintzy cheeriness." No one was willing to acknowledge that the plaster of the house was falling, or the inevitability that the old woman's heart would stop.

Welcome to the Parish of St. Minver
St. Enodoc St. Menefreda St. Michael The ecclesiastical parish of St. Minver is situated on the north coast of Cornwall, England, across the river from Padstow and next to Wadebridge. It is part of the Diocese of Truro and through that, part of the Church of England The parish is bounded on the west by the River Camel from Trewornan Bridge to its mouth at Pentire Head; then the boundary follows the coast to the hamlet of Port Quin, from where it crosses inland, just skirting Chapel Amble, until it returns to Trewornan Bridge. The parish is blessed with three churches; the parish church of St. Menefreda with the chapels of St. Enodoc at Trebetherick and St. Michael at Porthilly, Rock.
History and Legend.
Cornwall is a county rich in legend and poor in history. For many hundreds of years, whilst the rest of Britain was being civilised, first by the Romans and then by the Normans, Cornwall remained isolated, a country with its own language and customs, remote and aloof. Legend and history intermingle. It is impossible to be certain when legend ends and history begins in Cornwall. This is particularly true of early church history. Some religious records were kept in our few monasteries. These were mostly lost during the Reformation, early in the 16th century. Others were destroyed in coastal raids by Danes, Spaniards and Frenchmen. More destruction occurred during the Civil War.

That shone through the plate glass windows

    Beside her the lonely crochet
    Lay patiently and unstirred,
But the fingers that would have work'd it
Were dead as the spoken word. And Nurse came in with the tea-things
But Nurse was alone with her own little soul,
And the things were alone with theirs.... And 'Tea !' she said in a tiny voice
'Wake up ! It's nearly five.' Oh ! Chintzy, chintzy cheeriness, Half dead and half alive ! . . . Death in Leamington ' with ' Remorse ' (1954), of which I quote the first two stanzas: The lungs draw in the air and rattle it out again; The eyes revolve in their sockets and upwards stare; She whom I loved and left is no longer there. The nurse puts down her knitting and walks across to her With quick professional eye she surveys the dead. Just one patient the less and little the loss to her, Distantly tender she settles the shrunken head....

    The Real John Betjeman.
Sir John Betjeman's public image is that of a lifelong devotee of the English upper classes. In a 40-year career as a poet, he celebrated the English countryside, poked affectionate fun at the country set and cursed the vulgarity of the lower orders. The same patrician viewpoint informed his writings on architecture. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1972, he was eventually hailed by The Times newspaper: 'By appointment: Teddy Bear to the Nation'. Channel 4's The Real John Betjeman shows that behind the public image was a more complex reality. Combining hitherto unseen archive material with the testimony of friends ranging from journalist Simon Jenkins to Barry (Dame Edna Everage) Humphries, it shows that Betjeman was a high Tory lyricist who was deeply insecure about his social background and his gift for poetry; a believer in the cohesive force of Christianity who could not himself believe; and an apolitical old buffer who spied for Britain. Finding his way.

    40. BETJEMAN, John., Complete Autograph Draft Of The Spoken Commentary For Betjeman'
betjeman, john. john betjeman first fell in love with Cornwall during his childhood holidays and continued to return to it yearly until his death
    http://www.polybiblio.com/quaritch/G89.html
    Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
BETJEMAN'S CORNWALL BETJEMAN, John. Complete autograph draft of the spoken commentary for Betjeman's television programme 'One Man's County' broadcast on BBC 1 in 15 foolscap pages, numbered 1-3, 3-14, written in ball-point pen on ruled paper, heavily revised, in very good condition. 'John Betjeman first fell in love with Cornwall during his childhood holidays and continued to return to it yearly until his death ... It has inspired some of his best poems and most evocative prose. Many other places in Britain and Ireland ... have been celebrated by him, but the Cornish cliffs and beaches, modest churches and formidable sea have the power to stir him which only first love possesses' (prefatory note to Betjeman's Cornwall, 1984, where this script was first published).
'One Man's County' draws together all these aspects of Cornwall – the moorland granite landscape, the traces of early man, the coming of Christianity, the churches and the 'Cornish miracle of carving' at St. Mary Magdelene in Launceston, the Methodists, the mines and quarries, granite and slate, Cornish engineers, and Brunel's great railway bridge. The programme ends with reflections on the damage caused by pyramids of white silica waste from the china clay industry, and by tourism.
Betjeman made this programme for BBC Documentaries at Bristol (John Boorman was then director of the unit). He will first have collaborated with the BBC in choosing which sites to film in Cornwall, and then will have written the commentary while watching the roughly-edited film on a screen editor, writing to footage. This requires a particular talent (Auden's The Night Mail is the best-known example), and Betjeman writes a rhythmical prose set out as it is to be read:
