History a la Pierre Berton
By ANOUK HOEDEMAN
Toronto Sun PIERRE BERTON'S CANADA: THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE
Pierre Berton
(Stoddart)
Pierre Berton's Canada includes history, geography and biography.
From the lush Queen Charlotte Islands to the barren Labrador coast, from the Great Lakes to the rugged Yukon, Berton's book explores Canada through the eyes of 25 diverse and remarkable early Canadians.
Only a handful, such as first prime minister John A. Macdonald, poet Robert Service and the explorer La Salle, are known to the average reader. Some are brave pioneers, frontier entrepreneurs or simply wandering oddballs. What they all have in common is an adventurous spirit of the sort that helped shape the Canadian identity.
The short but entertaining biographies of these early settlers and explorers only skim the surface. But this format, along with the beautiful landscape photography, offers a tantalizing taste of our scenic land and its history.

T wo of Mr. Berton’s popular books, The National Dream (1970) and The Last Spike (1972), told the story of the background and construction of Canada’s first transcontinental railway in a colourful and detailed manner. These two works were later adapted as a television series that provided Canadians with a fascinating insight into the early history of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its fundamental role in the development of our nation. Mr. Berton’s dramatic narrative of The Last Spike earned him a third Governor General’s Award in 1972.

Pierre Berton The Great Depression Then and Now
By Melanie Fogel

1990 November
Get to know the man behind the bow tie as he reflects on the legacy of the decade that changed Canada forever. Pierre Berton's Great Depression may be the most comprehensive look at a Canadian decade ever attempted. But it is not complete, nor could it be within reason. It tells us much about ourselves; and, from what it says and how it says it, may tell us something about the man Pierre Berton as well. CM : How did you decide what to put in and what to leave out? Berton : Well, generally, being a journalist, I put in what I find interesting, what interests me, or what is significant, of course. But in a book like this you can't put in everythingand you shouldn't. That would be really, hideously boring. CM : Is there anything you regretted leaving out? Berton : No. If I was going to be sorry to leave it out, I put it in. CM : You point out some interesting parallels between then and now, like the birth control debate and abortion, but it seems to me a lot else hasn't changed either. Berton : You still have politicians who, like generals, try to fight the next war using the tactics of the last war. Most of the panaceas they thought would work were old and tired, such as balancing the budget. We still hear that. Now, what's more important, balancing the budget or feeding the hungry? I would say feeding the hungry, and, OK, the next generation has to pay for it. But the next generation always pays for the last, and they should. They're the children of their fathers and mothers, and the fathers and mothers should expect to lay some of the burden on their offspring. They should pay. So I've never been worried, as some people are, about these guys who say we have to have high interest rates now to stop inflation. We're always going to have inflation; it's been going on steadily forever, and high interest rates are not going to help.

PIERRE BERTON
Pierre Berton may be Canada's most popular author. He has published over 40 books, including many narrative histories that have become Canadian classics. Growing up, I used to always receive "Berton's latest" for Christmas, and it was one of the gifts I appreciated the most. Though often a controversial figure, his work remains a national treasure. His most recent book, Marching as to War , deals with Canada's "turbulent years" from 1899 to 1953. MacKenzie King was prime minister for many of the years you write about in Marching as to War . In a recent poll of Canadian historians he was ranked as Canada's greatest prime minister. How much of this is the effect of the rearview mirror? He doesn't seem to have been particularly well liked by the public or even his close associates when he was in power. He wasn't very popular, that's true, but he understood the country better than anybody else. He had problems to face, the main one being the split between the French-speaking and English-speaking, and I think he saved us a lot of trouble in the Second World War by kind of smoothing over the conscription crisis - bit by bit in his roundabout way. Do you think he was a great leader or just a great politician, someone with a knack for staying in office?

pierre berton is one of Canadas most prolific and popular authors and an accomplished story teller of CBC programs, including Thepierre berton Show, My Country, The Great Debate
    http://aurora.icaap.org/talks/berton.html
Berton is well known as a journalist and a media personality. He wrote columns for and was editor of Close- Up and was a permanent fixture on Front Page Challenge for 39 years. He was a columnist and editor for the Toronto Star and was a writer and host of a series of CBC programs, including The Pierre Berton Show, My Country, The Great Debate ,and Heritage Theatre. Klondike sold more than 150,000 copies, an extraordinary number for any Canadian book, let alone a book of non-fiction Berton continues to employ research associates and explore new fields of scholarship. His next volume, Marching as to War is expected in 2001. Although best known for his articulation of Canadian history, Berton has reflected on his life and times, and on Canada and Canadians, their values and idiosyncrasies, including (1996 and 1998) and Welcome to the 21st Century: More Absurdities from Our Time While many professional historians may lament his, at times, uncritical eye or his belief in the Canadian dream, each volume adds to our understanding of ourselves and our nation. Each volume attests to the skill of Mr. Berton and his research colleagues in seeking out the esoteric and the key resources to prepare his books. Of his historical works, nearly 20 titles centre on the North, perhaps because Berton was born and grew up in the Yukon and retains strong attachments to these territories or because the North holds a fascination for Canadians and for many Europeans.
