I wasn't expecting to like "Blood to Blood," as much as Mina, but I did. The author's adept ability to create atmosphere and mood are here, as well as her right-on characterizations of Mina, Jonathan, Arthur, and Van Helsing. Bergstrom stays true to the characters Stoker created, but she lets us get to know them better. On center stage with Mina and her friends is the half-sister of Dracula, Joanna. I don't want to give any of the plot away, so I'll just say that the story is seductive, fast-paced, and suspenseful. Fans of "Mina," "Dracula," and other vampire fiction won't be disappointed.

Hamilton's. They are tall, long-limbed and beautiful, ageless, strong and nearly invulnerable, but they are also sensitive, artistic and tightly bonded to their kin. They hunt but rarely kill, showing a great deal of compassion for those upon whom they feed. Elaine Bergstrom returns to her highly developed Austra clan with Nocturne , her first novel in the series in a decade. Since I'd never read her work before, I worried I'd be lost without the details provided by earlier books; not to worry, Nocturne proceeds smoothly, filling in all the backstory new readers might need. Richard, the youngest of the Austra clan, is caught up in a subtle but unexpected war with another family with old ties to their Romanian homeland. This family has very different beliefs regarding violence and very implausible theories regarding the acquisition of power and blood from those of the Austra line. Elaine Bergstrom, The Door Through Washington Square (Ace, 1998) Real magick is born out of need, fueled by hope and desire. At least, that's the way Elaine Bergstrom sees it. The Door Through Washington Square is a modern fantasy novel that examines this need and the people who are capable of wielding such power. Dierdre MacCallum finally feels as though her life is coming together, until she receives word of her Grandmum's summons to stay with her until she dies. Unable to refuse her family's wishes, Dierdre leaves her comfortable life in Calgary and travels to New York City, back to her Grandmum's Greenwich Village townhouse and the vague memories of her childhood. To her surprise, Dierdre learns that her Grandmum has been hiding a secret for most of her life a secret that could change Diedre's life forever. As Grandmum's death quickly approaches, Diedre must learn all she can about Grandmum's relationship with Aleister Crowley and the magick that lies at the center of the entire MacCallum estate. Bergstrom's work is heavily researched; in fact, much of the information about Crowley comes from his own books. The plot was interesting and pleasantly complex, and the characters were charming enough. Bergstrom's use of Thelemic ritual and magick , combined with the bawdy atmosphere of New York in the 1920s, kept me interested in the novel from beginning to end. And while the book wasn't spectacular, it was entertaining and new, as I've never studied much about Crowley and his magick. However, I found it almost impossible to overlook the numerous errors contained in the novel; apparently, no one bothered to proof it before publication.

Elaine Bergstrom, Blood to Blood: The Dracula Story Continues (Ace, 2000) As the title suggests, Blood to Blood is intended as a sequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula , though it borrows more in the way of characters (Jonathan and Mina Harker, Arthur, Van Helsing) than atmosphere and charm from its predecessor. This is actually Bergstrom's second "sequel" to Stoker's horror classic. Mina: The Dracula Story Continues predates Blood to Blood by several years (and was written under a different name, Marie Kiraly). Bergstrom has provided some details from her earlier book delivered mainly through the characters' personal reflections that will help readers understand the current narrative's playing field, but ultimately the novel does not stand well on its own, lacking some degree of continuity between the original and the current timeline. At heart, Blood to Blood is not a horror story, vampires and murderers notwithstanding. It's a love story, a murder mystery and practically a treatise for early feminism, all rolled into one. But not a horror story. The driving force of this novel isn't Dracula, now truly dead, but Joanna Tepes, Vlad's half-sister in life, and slave in death. She is one of the three vampire "sisters" to feed upon Jonathan while he is captive in Dracula's castle. Hence, she has a blood tie to Jonathan. For reasons not entirely clear (though fear and loneliness, and perhaps a desire to seek revenge upon Mina seem to factor high among them), Joanna flees Dracula's castle shortly after Mina and Van Helsing's most recent visit (the subject of Mina), and heads for London. There is an implication that Joanna is not quite all there characters hint of her insanity from previous encounters; she suffers from bouts of near-hysterical giggles but she seems to cope well enough, finding herself a wayward Irish lass, Colleen, to help her with the troublesome passage and life in a bustling city.

Corridors of Communication Dracula has always been one of my favorite novels, so it's hardly surprising that any books involving the Count would catch my eye and interest. Imagine my surprise when I learned that the author of Mina also authored Tapestry of Dark Souls , one of my favorite Ravenloft novels. A horror, suspense, and fantasy novelist, Elaine Bergstrom has been taking her readers into under-explored realms since beginning her career in 1985. Her books on the Austra Family, her signature series, ventured a new twist in the world of the vampire. Not dead, not even undead, the Austras are a breed unto themselves. Her continuation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, focusing on Mina Harker after the Count's death, was as satisfying an alternate viewpoint as her tale of Elizabeth Bathory. Whether exploring the closely guarded world of the Austra clan, treading the halls of ghostly mansions or going back through history with her, Elaine Bergstrom never fails to satisfy. A graduate of the College of Journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee, she has worked as a Journalism teacher for Milwaukee Area Technical College and a lecturer for Alverno College's Great Lakes Writer's Workshop. She currently teaches an ongoing novel writer's workshop for Milwaukee's Redbird Studios and a novel writing workshop for Writer's Digest School
