An English novelist also well known as a journalist and as a reviewer, under the name Jacob Tonson, on the influential left-wing journal The New Age edited by A.R. Orage. Bennett wrote in a late nineteenth century realistic style that had more in common with the early George Moore and with Zola and de Maupassant , and this distanced him from more experimental contemporaries. His work was often attacked as being merely 'photographic' but others have seen in it the perception and authority of a Balzac or a Flaubert whose techniques he certainly studied. He is particularly powerful as the portrayer of individuals in conflict with their social and family environment.
The novels which gave him greatest fame drew on the life of his birth place, the 'Five Towns', which now comprise the City of Stoke-on-Trent in the Northern part of the English county of Staffordshire. The area was, and is still, also known as the Potteries, the major centre of the English pottery and porcelain industry, the home of such distinguished firms as Wedgwood and Spode. What are generally regarded as Bennett's major achievements, and are certainly his best known works, all have the Five Towns as their setting: Anna Of The Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908) and The Clayhanger Family (a collection of three earlier novels - Clayhanger (1910), Hilda Lessways (1911) and These Twain (1915) - brought together in 1925).

49. Arnold Bennett And The Potteries
arnold bennett and The Potteries.
http://net1.netcentral.co.uk/steveb/people_famous/bennett/locations.htm
Arnold Bennett and The Potteries Arnold Bennett Many of the locations in Clayhanger and other Bennett novels based in "The five towns" correspond to actual locations in and around the Potteries district of Staffordshire. Some of these correspondences are set out below. For further guidance consult Studies in the sources of Arnold Bennett's novels by Louis Tillier (Didier, Paris 1949), and Arnold Bennett and Stoke-on-Trent by E. J. D. Warrilow (Etruscan Publications, 1966). Aboukir Road: Nile Street, Burslem. Bleakridge: Cobridge, once a relatively exclusive suburb, between Burslem and Hanley. Blood Tub: Warrilow points out that 'more than one theatre in Burslem was affectionately known as the "Blood Tub" '. Accordingly, more than one original has been suggested. No doubt Bennett drew on several sources, including perhaps a 'fit up' in Moorland Road, and The Britannia (or Snape's) Theatre (see Tillier, p. 129). The site of Bennett's Blood Tub corresponds to that of the Wedgwood Theatre Royal, which stood in Wedgwood Place.

Arnold Bennett
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Enoch Arnold Bennett May 27 March 27 ) was a British novelist He was born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent Staffordshire , one of six towns in the area known as the Potteries . Enoch Bennett, his father, had qualified as a solicitor in 1876 and had an office in Piccadilly Street, Hanley. The younger Bennett was brought up in modest surroundings and educated locally and at the University of London At age 21 Arnold, who worked as a rent collector, left his father's practice and went to London as a solicitor's clerk. He won a literary competition in " Tit Bits " magazine in 1889 and was encouraged to take up journalism full time. In 1894 he became assistant editor of the periodical "Woman". He noticed that the material offered by a syndicate to the magazine was not very good, so he wrote a serial which was bought by the syndicate for 75 pounds. He then wrote another. This became The Grand Babylon Hotel . Just over four years later his first novel A Man from the North was published to critical acclaim and he became editor to the magazine.
