Arnold Bennett
Arnold Bennett was a successful English playwright, novelist and journalist. Being influenced by the French novelist, Émile Zola (1840-1902), like his friends, H. G. Wells and John Galsworthy , Bennett was styled as a "naturalistic novelist" (persons are creatures of their own environment). These writers were attacked by the "modernists," like Virginia Woolf . In 1903, Bennett moved to Paris (married a Frenchwoman) and lived there for some years. I have put up, here at www.blupete.com, two short pieces which Bennett wrote: " Artists and Critics " and " Unclean Books

Arnold Bennett - Son of Stoke-on-Trent
Bennett, (Enoch) Arnold
English novelist, playwright, and essayist, born in Hanley (27th May 1867), Stoke-on-Trent , Staffordshire (Hanley was the real-life model for one of the "Five Towns" of his novels). Bennett was educated at the University of London and for a time was editor of Woman magazine. After 1900 he devoted himself entirely to writing; dramatic criticism was one of his foremost interests. Bennett is best known, however, for his novels, several of which were written during his residence in France. Bennett's infancy was spent in genteel poverty, which gave way to prosperity as his father succeeded as a solicitor. From this provincial background he became a novelist.
His enduring fame is as a Chronicler of the Potteries towns, the setting and inspiration of some of his most famous and enduring literary work and the place where he grew up. Many of the locations in Clayhanger and other Bennett novels are based in "The five towns" and correspond to actual locations in and around the Potteries district of North Staffordshire click here to see a list of some of the locations.

Introduction
Harris and Bennett moved in similar literary circles but did not actually meet until the relatively late date of 1908, after Harris had written a letter to 'Jacob Tonson' - Bennett's pseudonym for his literary criticism in the New Age . Their friendship would not last long, but for a time they had a deep mutual admiration. Sources for this page are, predominantly, Frank Harris to Arnold Bennett (1936), a privately-printed pamphlet, which reproduces 58 letters from Harris to Bennett, and Letters of Arnold Bennett, Vol II (1968), which includes 6 letters from Bennett to Harris, as well as several letters to others in which Harris is mentioned.
The Beginning
Arnold Bennett, under his pseudonym of 'Jacob Tonson' had been writing glowing reviews of Harris' work [ ] in the New Age . (The original Tonson was an eighteenth century publisher of - amongst others - Dryden's poetry and the first edition of Paradise Lost ). Harris wrote to 'Tonson' about The Bomb and was pleasantly surprised to receive a reply from Bennett which included the statement that "there is no author in England whom I should more like to meet than the author of Montes " (referring to Harris' great short story

Anna of the five towns
by Arnold Bennett
Introduction
John Potter, Chairman of the Arnold Bennett Society, has written this introduction especially for the website: Anna is the first of Arnold Bennett's 'Five Towns' novels. It was started in 1896, two years before the debut of his first published novel A Man from the North in 1898, but did not finally appear until September 1902 after six years of re-writing and polishing and several changes of title. It is therefore an extremely important work, the more so because it began a long series of stories set in his thinly-disguised birthplace - the Potteries - over a period of nearly twenty years. As is frequently the case with an aspiring author, A Man from the North was basically autobiographical in a personal way, but there was little personal, though much of upbringing and living social history, in Anna . A recent discovery indicates that Bennett at 20 went through a short-lived engagement to a young lady with financial expectations, with whose family he went on a holiday to the Isle of Man, but that is the extent of any similarity between fact and fiction. However, the locality and its inhabitants are faithfully portrayed and the Tellwright house was modelled on one of the Bennett family homes. Anna Anna is almost a do-it-yourself book, which each reader can interpret according to personal feeling. Perhaps the main certainty about it is that it stands firmly on a tragic ending leavened by the enigmatic hint of some sort of future hope. Confirmation of this came unwittingly from Bennett himself when he rewrote the story as a play ("Cupid and Commonsense") and ruined it by introducing a happy ending.

a man of the Potteries
Arnold Bennett was an English novelist, playwright, essayist, critic and journalist. By any standards, his output was prolific: thirty novels, almost three thousand articles, ten plays and many other writings. He was a bon viveur who enjoyed to the full the fruits of his hard work, his success and the acclaim accorded him. Amongst his prized possessions was his luxurious yacht, the Valsa.
A man of contradictions, Bennett was, at the same time, proud to be a trustee of the left-wing magazine
