Hilaire Belloc , the son of Louis Belloc, a French barrister, was born in St. Cloud near Paris in 1870. His mother was Elizabeth Rayner Parkes , the daughter of the Birmingham radical, Joseph Parkes, and granddaughter of Joseph Priestley . Although she was converted to Catholicism from Unitarianism , she remained a political radical and was a strong supporter of women's rights.
The Belloc family moved to England when Hilaire was two years old. After being educated at the Oratory School, Birmingham he served in the French Army . Belloc returned to England in 1892 and became a student at Balliol College Oxford . He graduated with a first class honours degree but was disappointed when he was not offered a Fellowship. Convinced that he had been rejected because of his Catholic religious views, he went on a lecture tour of the United States. He also had two books of verse published:

Hilaire Belloc
An eloquent and exuberant speaker, Hilaire Belloc was known for supporting unpopular opinions and pontificating on the idiocy and ignorance of the views of the British public (DeBoer-Langworthy 41). Ironically, Belloc could deliver his speeches with such elegance and wit that the British public seemed eager to listen. However masterful Belloc was in his speech, though, he seemed to be embroiled in political controversy for much of his adult life. In 1888, Belloc began work as a land agent on a farm in Sussex, and it was here that he began writing poetry. His poems were first published in the Irish Monthly and the Pall Mall Gazette , a magazine for which his sister, Marie, worked. Belloc, who showed no aptitude for farming, left Sussex in 1889 to begin his own monthly literary review. Hs turned to an old Oratory schoolmate - Arthur Hungerford Pollen - for help. Together they published the Paternoster . The monthly was unsuccessful, however, and only six issues appeared in print. It was in these years also that Belloc met and was received by Henry Edward Cardinal Manning, a convert to Catholicism. Manning frequently told Belloc of his political and religious views, and Belloc welcomed the information because of its unconventionality. It was Manning who instilled in Belloc an almost militant stance on Catholicism. In 1891 a frustrated and unemployed Belloc once again felt compelled to return to France. He joined the French Artillery in the 10th Battery of the 8th Regiment (63). He served in the French military until 1893 when he entered Balliol College, Oxford.

INVITING THE INFLUENCE OF A YOUNG LADY UPON THE
OPENING YEAR YOU wear the morning like your dress
When as you walk your loveliness
Goes shining all around:
Upon your secret, smiling way
Such new contents were found,
The Dancing Loves made holiday
On that delightful ground.
Then summon April forth, and send
Commandment through the flowers;
About our woods your grace extend, A queen of careless hours. With all her royal nymphs in train Could so lead on the Spring.
925 The Night
MOST Holy Night, that still dost keep The keys of all the doors of sleep, To me when my tired eyelids close Give thou repose. And let the far lament of them Make in my ears, who wakeful lie, Soft lullaby. By my bedside their memories croon. So shall I have new dreams and blest In my brief rest. Fold thy great wings about my face, Hide day-dawn from my resting-place, And cheat me with thy false delight, Most Holy Night.

HILAIRE BELLOC
Hilaire Belloc was born in 1870 in a village a dozen miles from Paris a few days before the start of the Franco-Prussian war. Because of the war, he and his sister were taken to England and when the family returned to their home at the end of the war, they found it utterly vandalised by the occupying German troops. This in some measure, explains his life-long hostility to all things German. He returned to England and was educated at the Oratory School Birmingham, under Cardinal Newman, and later at Balliol College, Oxford, but before Balliol he went back to France to honour what he saw as an obligation to do his military service there, though he was not legally required to. His experience in the artillery influenced him strongly and, like another of his great loves, the sea, never seems far from his mind in his writings. At Oxford, Belloc was famed both for brilliance in debate and high energy. He became President of the Oxford Union, but, probably because of his decided, and not always, fashionable views, failed to be elected a don after graduating, and this remained a permanent disappointment and a grievance for him. His first book was a small volume of verse, published in 1896, and from then on a torrent of books, pamphlets, letters etc. poured from his pen. It astonishes, not only in its bulk but in its diversity; French and British history, military strategy, satire, comic and serious verse, literary criticism, topography and travel, translations, religious, social and political commentary, long-running controversies with such opponents as H.G. wells and Dr. G.G. Coulton, and hundreds of essays, fill over one hundred and fifty volumes. It is little wonder that A.P. Herbert described him as "the man who wrote a library".

ARTICLE by Michael Morassutti W Pelagian Drinking Song The Outline of History as mock history? In Land and Water , his speculations on the developments of the First World War won accolades from the Times . In his classic The Servile State , is there not an anticipation of that socialist choking of individual liberty as is evidenced in post-war Western governments? Already in 1913 Belloc seemed to see the coming Keynesian model of state control of the economy through money and taxes when he forecasted: The future of industrial society... is a future in which subsistence and security shall be guaranteed for the proletariat, but shall be guaranteed at the expense of the old political freedom and by the establishment of that proletariat in a status really, though not nominally, servile. . Yet Oliver, I believe, overlooked the fact that Belloc and Dawson were men of different times and social milieus, with dissimilar angles of attack, addressing themselves to differing intellectual audiences. Even in the 1990s we have a distinguished thinker like Pro fessor James Hitchcock who makes quite clear his dissension from Belloc. He described Belloc as: The issue is now settled.

published by Harper Collins (h/b) ISBN: (p/b) ISBN: hardcover: paperback: Joseph Pearce relies heavily upon The Young Hilaire Belloc (Marie Belloc-Lowndes) and The Life of Hilaire Belloc Pearce uses the same technique as he employed in Wisdom and Innocence , his biography of G.K.Chesterton. In both books, he examines an aspect of his subject's work, and by following it through to a conclusion, takes the reader forward, chronologically. So we are introduced to Belloc, knight errant in love, soldier, scholar, traveler, poet, essayist, novelist, historian, biographer, artist, composer, apologist, political philosopher, the epitome of "Renaissance Man". Pearce notes, indeed dwells upon, a restlessness in Belloc which a closer examination might reveal to be the source of much of the sorrow and pain in his life. He does not seek to explain it, perhaps because it is beyond explanation. Belloc unaccountably left the Oratory School, where he had been a great success, at the age of seventeen, so throwing up his chance of going on to University. Pearce's guess is that this rather reckless act was the result of being (kindly) rejected by a young woman, Minna Hope, with who he had fallen in love. Belloc, against the advice of his French relatives, entered the College Stanislas as a naval cadet. He did not like it and after a few months simply walked out in his cadet uniform and returned to London. He next trained as a land agent on a Sussex farm, but, after a

19. Heresy Of Mohammed – The Founder Of Islam, The Faith Of Muslims
Roman Catholic interpretation of Mohammedanism, by hilaire belloc (18701953).
http://www.trosch.org/bks/mohammed.html
INTRODUCTION : The Great and Enduring Heresy of Mohammed – Mohammed, a pagan who recognized the imperfections of paganism, founded the religion of Islam by extracting from Christianity (Catholicism) some of its doctrine. Not having the gift of faith, Mohammed, having lived among Catholics for much of his life and gaining knowledge of the established teachings of Christianity but not having an association with the reality of faith, selected from Christian teachings those aspects that he could accept that would still give him the opportunity to be seen as a great prophet and religious leader. As common with those who found their own belief system, Mohammed selectively included many beliefs that met with his own humanistic criteria, goals and desire for power while keeping an imaginary relationship with God. Index of Documents on Islam The following article is excerpted from a book entitled: "The Great Heresies," by Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) who was one of the premier Catholic apologists of the early twentieth century. In this work Belloc analyzes the concept of heresy and examines the five greatest attacks upon the Church — Arianism, Islam, Albigensianism, Protestantism and Modernism. The book is published by; Trinity Communications, Manassas, Virginia.
