Edward Bellamy (1850-1898, Mass.)- member of the bar, journalist, short story writer, most famous work is "Looking Backward"
Edward Bellamy's "Looking backward: 2000-1887" helped to fill the void felt by Americans who desired the utopian sense of community in the absence of Associationism. While not particularly noteworthy as a piece of fiction, Looking Backward addressed the yearnings of a society stricken by economic panics and social collapse by proposing an Eden-like community in which war, hunger, and malice were engineered out of society. While the story followed the wonderment of Julian West as he awoke in a Boston of 2000 A.D. after 113 years of sleep, the text focused on Bellamy's description (through the kindly and unusually all-knowing character, Dr. Leete) of a "post-revolutionary" society which emancipated the individual from the horrors of capitalism. In this utopian future, people and nations had forsaken the individual parties and desires of the earlier chaotic age to create a communitarian utopia epitomized by a National Party.
In his work, Bellamy explains the social essence of capitalism, discusses the injustice of capitalist wages, refutes the excuses for unequal wealth, describes the moral logic of equal compensation for all who give their best effort, aruges that property is not about ownership of things but about exploitive human relations. Bellamy was a self-styled champion of democracy who wanted to extend the American democratic political revolution into people's economic lives. Unfortunately, however, economic democracy - decision making input in proportion to the degree one is affected - is not so easy to achieve.

    LOOKING BACKWARD AT SOCIALISM
The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892 and expresses ideas in the socialist utopian novels of Francis' cousin Edward Bellamy. Francis wrote the pledge to promote the Bellamys' idea of socialism in the most socialistic institution -government schools. The Bellamy cousins were totalitarian socialists, and the ideas that inspired them and the pledge caused mass atrocities worldwide. ( http://members.ij.net/rex/pledge1.html

Of course, all of the preceding is portrayed as a dandy utopia just as it was portrayed by so many apologists for the military socialist complex of the socialist trio of atrocities and other socialist hell-holes (see http://members.ij.net/rex/socialists.jpg
Bellamy's book was translated into 20 foreign languages. It was popular among the elite in pre-revolutionary Russia, and was even read by Lenin's wife. John Dewey and the historian Charles Beard intended to praise the book by stating that it was matched in influence only by Das Kapital.
Did Bellamy foresee soviet-style rationing, or did he inspire it?

Does the Pledge of Allegiance establish a religion the worship of government?
Public comments about the pledge court case show that few people know that the pledge was written in 1892 by a self-proclaimed National Socialist in the U.S., who wanted government to take over all schools to create an "industrial army" for totalitarian socialism.
Few people know that the original salute to the flag was like the Nazi salute and that "Nazi" means "National Socialist German Workers' Party." (Eye-popping photos are only at http://members.ij.net/rex/pledge1.html http://members.ij.net/rex/swastikanews.html ). Francis Bellamy originated his salute, and the common claim that the straight-arm salute is a Roman salute is a myth ( http://members.ij.net/rex/pledgesalute.html
The pledge of allegiance was authored by the self-proclaimed socialist Francis Bellamy. Bellamy was the first cousin of the socialist Edward Bellamy. Edward Bellamy's futuristic novel, "Looking Backward," was published in 1888, and described life in the year 2000. It described a totalitarian society where all private transactions are outlawed, where the government places all men in an "industrial army" and where the monolithic government school system is operated specifically as part of the "industrial army" system. Of course, all of the preceding was portrayed as a dandy utopia just as it was portrayed by so many apologists for the industrial armies of socialist hell-holes worldwide.
The book spawned a socialist movement in the U.S. known as "Nationalism," with the Nationalist magazine, and "Nationalist Clubs" whose members wanted the federal government to nationalize most of the American economy. Francis Bellamy was a member of this movement and a vice president of its socialist auxiliary group.

How I Came to Write Looking Backward
From The Nationalist , May 1889 I accept more readily the invitation to tell in The Nationalist how I came to write Looking Backward for the reason that it will afford an opportunity to clear up certain points on which inquiries have been frequently addressed to me. I never had, previous to the publication of the work, any affiliations with any class or sect of industrial or social reformers nor, to make my confession complete, any particular sympathy with undertakings of the sort. It is only just to myself to say, however, that this should not be taken to indicate any indifference to the miserable condition of the mass of humanity, seeing that it resulted rather from a perception all too clear of the depth and breadth of the social problem and a consequent skepticism as to the effectiveness of the proposed solutions which had come to my notice. In undertaking to write Looking Backward I had, at the outset, no idea of attempting a serious contribution to the movement of social reform. The idea was of a mere literary fantasy, a fairy tale of social felicity. There was no thought of contriving a house which practical men might live in, but merely of hanging in mid-air, far out of reach of the sordid and material world of the present, a cloud-palace for an ideal humanity. In order to secure plenty of elbow room for the fancy and prevent awkward collisions between the ideal structure and the hard facts of the real world, I fixed the date of the story in the year AD 3000. As to what might be in AD 3000 one man's opinion was as good as another's, and my fantasy of the social system of that day only required to be consistent with itself to defy criticism. Emboldened by the impunity my isolated position secured me, I was satisfied with nothing less than the whole earth for my social palace. In its present form the story is a romance of the ideal nation, but in its first form it was a romance of an ideal world. In the first draft of
