  • Author's Preface Chapter 1: I first saw the light in the city of Boston in the year 1857. Chapter 2: The thirtieth day of May, 1887, fell on a Monday. It was one of the annual holidays of the nation in the latter third of the nineteenth century.... Chapter 3: "He is going to open his eyes. He had better see but one of us at first." Chapter 4: I did not faint, but the effort to realize my position made me very giddy.... Chapter 5: When, in the course of the evening the ladies retired, leaving Dr. Leete and myself alone, he sounded me as to my disposition for sleep.... Chapter 6: Dr. Leete ceased speaking, and I remained silent, endeavoring to form some general conception of the changes in the arrangements of society implied in the tremendous revolution which he had described. Chapter 7: "It is after you have mustered your industrial army into service," I said, "that I should expect the chief difficulty to arise...." Chapter 8: When I awoke I felt greatly refreshed, and lay a considerable time in a dozing state, enjoying the sensation of bodily comfort. Chapter 9: Dr. and Mrs. Leete were evidently not a little startled to learn, when they presently appeared, that I had been all over the city alone that morning....

69. Edward Bellamy, Looking Backward
edward bellamy, Looking Backward. By way of attempting to give the reader some general impression of the way people lived together
http://www.nv.cc.va.us/home/nvsageh/Hist122/Part1/Bellamy.htm
Edward Bellamy, Looking Backward It must in truth be admitted that the main effect of the spectacle of the misery of the toilers at the rope was to enhance the passengers' sense of the value of their seats upon the coach, and to cause them to hold on to them more desperately than before. If the passengers could only have felt assured that neither they nor their friends would ever fall from the top, it is probable that, beyond contributing to the funds for liniments and bandages, they would have troubled themselves extremely little about those who dragged the coach. I am well aware that this will appear to the men and women of the twentieth century as incredible inhumanity, but there are two facts, both very curious, which partly explain it. In the first place, it was firmly and sincerely believed that there was no other way in which Society could get along, except when the many pulled at the rope and the few rode, and not only this, but that no very radical improvement even was possible, either in the harness, the coach, the. roadway, or the distribution of the toil. It had always been as it was, and it always would be so. It was a pity, but it could not be helped, and philosophy forbade wasting compassion on what was beyond remedy. Return to History 122 Part 1

Bellamy Unequalled Listen to Bellamy explain the social essence of capitalism in terms that all can understand: Looking Backward And who today explains as clearly the injustice of capitalist wages, or the moral logic of equal compensation for all who give their best effort? Dr. Leete: You ask me how we regulate wages; I can only reply that there is no idea in the modern social economy which at all corresponds with what was meant by wages in your day. Julian: By what title does the individual claim his particular share? What is the basis of allotment? Dr. Leete: His title is his humanity. The basis of his claim is the fact that he is a man.

FRtR Biographies Edward Bellamy
A biography of Edward Bellamy (1850-1897)
Quote Edward Bellamy was born March 26, 1850 in Chicoppee Falls, Massachusetts. Son and grandson of Baptist ministers, Bellamy studied law and worked briefly in the newspaper industry in New York and in Springfield, Massachusetts. Although he published four novels and several essays in his lifetime, he is remembered most for his 1888 work Looking Backward, 2000-1887 and it was this novel which influenced the formation of the Nationalist political movement and several accompanying utopian living experiments during the 1890`s. The novel became so popular that by 1900 only Uncle Tom`s Cabin had sold more copies. Looking Backward , certainly considered by many as within the genre of utopian fiction, anticipates a future America (the year 2000) of nationalized industry, equal distribution of wealth and the destruction of class divisionsthis vision counters the problems Bellamy saw with his contemporary society. In this utopian world, loyalty to the solidarity of the state holds the society together. Bellamy called this philosophy Nationalism. Although his fictional story in Looking Backward is unique, Bellamy owes much of the philosophy behind his vision to an earlier social reformer and author, Laurence Gronlund, who published his treatise

Edward BELLAMY,
Looking Backward 2000-1887, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston-New York, 1888.

James J. Kopp , which was published in 1888. With several other notable individuals, including journalist Heywood Broun and educator John Dewey, the two Bellamy women were part of what Broun called a "Back to Bellamy" movement.
This 1890 London edition of Looking Backward , one of the first with cover art, depicts Julian West awakening in the year 2000 after his 113-year mesmeric trance. Within two years of its publication in the United States, the novel had been translated and published in several European countries.

The Oregon Journal announced the event: "[Bellamy's] visualization of America peacefully converted into a vast industrial machine, with its resources and riches available to all, has continued to influence political and economic thought since" the success of Looking Backward . The Journal also reported: "Candidates of both the major parties have used quotations from 'Looking Backward' in the current campaign." The renewed interest in Bellamy, as evidenced by the Bellamys' stop in Portland, echoed an earlier influence that Edward Bellamy, his writings, and the movement he inspired had in Oregon.

"How do you carry on commerce without money?" I said. "In trading with other nations, you must use some sort of money, although you dispense with it in the internal affairs of the nation." "Oh, no; money is as superfluous in our foreign as in our internal relations. When foreign commerce was conducted by private enterprise, money was necessary to adjust it on account of the multifarious complexity of the transactions; but nowadays it is a function of the nations as units. There are thus only a dozen or so merchants in the world, and their business being supervised by the international council, a simple system of book accounts serves perfectly to regulate their dealings. Customs duties of every sort are of course superfluous. A nation simply does not import what its government does not think requisite for the general interest. Each nation has a bureau of foreign exchange, which manages its trading. For example, the American bureau, estimating such and such quantities of French goods necessary to America for a given year, sends the order to the French bureau, which in turn sends its order to our bureau. The same is done mutually by all the nations." "But how are the prices of foreign goods settled, since there is no competition?"
