MASTER OF THE CROSSROADS
By Madison Smartt Bell
New York: Panther Books, 2000.
ISBN: 0-375-42056-8. 752 pages, plus Glossary and historical chronology.
$30.00 hard bound. Published Sunday, November 12, 2000, in the Miami Herald Toussaint's bloody battle for the `bauble' of Haiti Master of the Crossroads. Madison Smartt Bell. Pantheon. 752 pages. $30. BY ELLEN KANNER With this, his ninth novel, Madison Smartt Bell returns to the Haiti he so beautifully and achingly portrayed in All Souls' Rising, a finalist for the 1995 National Book Award. Both books are historical, recounting Haiti's bloody fight for independence with the country itself a crucible for racial struggle. A Tennessee native, Bell is haunted by the politics of race, and with Master of the Crossroads he provides a history lesson that tells us much about our present and, perhaps, constitutes a warning for our future. Taking up where its predecessor ended, Master of the Crossroads begins in 1794, with England, Spain and France all vying for control of the French Haitian colony Saint Domingue. The axis on which Bell's novel turns is Toussaint Louverture, the freed slave who led Haiti's revolt. "Toussaint understood the colony to be tossed among the European powers like a precious bauble, a stake or a pawn in their games of war. As yet he did not know enough to reason his way to an outcome. The bits of information he possessed lay quietly in his mind, like seeds." Toussaint is a pawn, used by France and Spain as a means by which to seize Saint Domingue, just as the rich, detached colonists toy with the lives of the poor natives, diminishing a land and its people in order to serve their selfish needs. Toussaint passes through the crossroads of countries and races, assuming the role of hero, traitor, criminal, slave, husband, general, father, pagan and Catholic.

In Anything Goes, Madison Smartt Bell's 13th work of fiction, the author follows a Tennessee country/rock cover band as it plays dives up and down the Eastern seaboard. The main character, Jesse Melungeon, capitalizes on a new lead singer's abilities and the shuffling of band personnel by slipping in his original numbers (and those of the former lead guitarist), much to the crowds' delight. Bell provides us with a strong sense of who Jesse is: a twentysomething kid of mixed race, drinking an...

Master of the Crossroads

In 1995 Madison Smartt Bell published All Souls' Rising, earning both critical plaudits and a National Book Award nomination for this fictional account of Haiti's 18th-century slave rebellion. Now he continues the saga with Master of the Crossroads, the second volume of a projected trilogy. Even in his earlier narratives of contemporary America, the author has always been attuned to the byzantine politics of color. But by focusing on the figure of Toussaint Louverturethe black general who l...

The Book That Changed My Life Madison Smartt Bell Madison Smartt Bell was honored in 1995 as a National Book Award Fiction Finalist for All Souls' Rising The first piece of "serious and literary" grown-up fiction I remember reading without duress was All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren. I was fourteen, and for the past two years my pleasure reading had consisted entirely of science fiction-I consumed one book per day in this genre. Not all of this time was wasted, but the diet had become a little monotonous. The lads a year ahead of me in high school were assigned to read Warren's novel. I picked up a copy in a study hall, to while away fifteen minutes of tedium. In that amount of time I was hooked. First edge of cynicism on its poetic valences. When I had read more of the book I was taken by the richness of its meanings, how thoroughly and thoughtfully the sense of every action and episode had been interlocked with all the others. I had wanted to be a writer before, but I had known that this was what a book could do, or that this was how you did it.

Epigraphs can be a literary form of social climbing; pick the right epigraph, and give your text the chance to become high brow by association. A sampling from a stack of true-life atrocities: Wasted, Linda Wolfe's account of Jennifer Levin's murder by Robert Chambers, takes an epigraphs form Graham Greene. Fatal Vision, Joe Mcginnis' much-maligned report on Jeffrey McDonald's murder of his family, has an epigraph from Macbeth. The Only Living Witness, one of a number of books about Ted Bundy, gets its epigraph from…. Ted Bundy. Ever more highbrow than thou, Truman Capote's In cold Blood quotes a quatrain from Francois Villon's Ballade des pendus, in Old French. But the hands-down winner of the epigraph sweepstakes is Melanie Thernstrom's Dead Girl, which is festooned with epigraphs, chapter by chapter, from Sartre, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Niebuhr, Milan Kundera, Hans Christian Andersen, and many, many more.
The barrage of epigraphs is not the only way that The Dead Girl seeks to declare its high literary seriousness, but from the cold-blooded, calculating viewpoint of genre, it's a case of Interesting Wrinkle: The author is not just another ambulance-chasing journalist, but a close personal friend of the eponymous dead girl, Roberta Lee, a Berkeley student who was beaten to death in 1984, perhaps by her boyfriend, Bradley page, perhaps by a person or persons unknown. This book is less concerned than other in its category with police-procedural detail, less concerned with a reconstruction of the crime itself or with a re-creation of the inner experience of victim and murderer. What it offers instead is full participation in the feelings of a survivor, the author; the reader is invited to share her doubt and conflict and fear and trembling. In fact, the whole thing is flooded with what Jane Austen would have called an excess of sensibility.
