Left to Right: Roy W. Bebee, Ella Bebee, Mary E. Watt Bebee, and William Thomas Bebee. This picture, taken ca 1905, is courtesy of Karma Bebee Martin. John Secord Beebe of New Carlisle, Bonaventure Co., Quebec wrote this letter to William Thomas Bebee on 1 April 1871. In addition to being a description of the family life of this New Carlisle Beebe family and related families in 1871, it is a remarkable relation of Beebe family history to which John Secord Beebe must have had access. A copy of this letter was given to me by Karma Bebee Martin of Oklahoma. The original is in the possession of Ron Bebee, also of Oklahoma. April 1st 1871

This Week Inventor Archive Inventor Search Inventor of the Week Archive Browse for a different Invention or Inventor Underwater Exploration Charles William Beebe, one of the United States' most significant oceanic pioneers, was born July 29, 1877 in Brooklyn, New York. Having grown up in a family that was very interested in animals and the great outdoors, Beebe was a naturalist early in his life. It was no surprise, therefore, when at 18 a letter he wrote on his observations of the brown creeper was published in Harper's Young People magazine. Beebe, who grew up in New Jersey, enrolled at Columbia University in 1896. Whether he officially graduated or not is in question though he never refuted that he earned a BS degree in 1899. That year he was offered a job as Assistant Bird Keeper at the Zoological Park (now the Bronx Zoo) in New York. He accepted, but the park's director, William T. Hornady, was so impressed with Beebe that he made him Assistant Curator of Birds immediately. By 1902, Beebe was Full Curator of birds. That year he married Mary Blair Rice, and the couple travelled to Mexico to study and obtain animal specimens for the park. They published an account of the experience, "Two Bird Lovers in Mexico," in 1905. Later they visited Trinidad and Venezuela and published an account of that voyage as well "Our Search For a Wilderness."

Point Reyes Light - June 12, 2003 William Beebe, 84, to be buried in his boots By Larken Bradley Lumberman in youth Plainspoken and direct A plainspoken fellow, "I’m like good cowsh-t," he once told his daughter, Skipper Beebe, "I’m everywhere." On Tuesday, Jerry Harrington of Bloomfield, a close friend for more than 50 years, recalled his friend’s honesty and fondness for practical joking. "His character was above reproach, but he was a character," Harrington reflected. As to his distinctly direct manner, "You always knew where you stood with Beebe." "I didn’t mind," his daughter told The Light , "but a lot of family members thought it was spooky." Lover of the outdoors An avid hunter and lover of the outdoors, this week his family wrote, "He is well known for... the time he took to save a tiny pine tree one day, as well as giving his breakfast to some small chipmunks." The Old Beebe Burying Ground AKA Smith Cemetery By Margaret Beebe Gee The Old Beebe Burying Ground is located in the SW quarter of section 15 in Mantua Township, Monroe County, Iowa. Earliest burials date back to the late 1840’s, but it was in December 1861 when my great, great grandfather Jeremiah Beebe and his wife Fernetta signed the deed conveying the burial ground to the trustees of Mantua Township. Jeremiah Beebe died in 1865 and in 1870 Fernetta Beebe married William Smith. As time went on, the burial ground became known as Smith Cemetery. In death records, which began in 1880, I find it recorded as both Beebe Cemetery and Smith Cemetery. It has also been referred to as Hynes Cemetery and Chidester Cemetery. During the course of my research, I have discovered that the folks buried in the entire east half of the cemetery are descendants (or married to descendants) of Borden and Sybil Williams Beebe who are the parents of Jeremiah Beebe and Lora Beebe, wife of Philander Tyrrell. It seems appropriate to name this cemetery the Old Beebe Burying Ground. The results of my research are being published here to help others. This should
