5. The American Experience | Alone On The Ice | William Beebe
Biography of the naturalist and his deepsea explorations.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/ice/sfeature/beebe.html
Over seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by oceans, only a fraction of which has ever been explored. William Beebe was one of this century's leading pioneers into the oceanic world. The Brooklyn, New York, native possessed an unrelenting curiosity about the natural world around, and beneath, him. Through his dozens of books describing his various expeditions, Beebe brought the average citizen in closer touch with the natural world.
Beebe's interest in ornithology took him to the far reaches of Mexico, Asia, and the Galapagos Islands, and deep into the jungles of South America. In 1919 he was named director of tropical research for the New York Zoological Society. His many exotic expeditions yielded an impressive collection of rare birds for the Society's zoological gardens. In 1930 when he began his historic undersea adventures, the 51-year-old Beebe had already established himself as a scientist of international renown. Little did he know that his greatest contributions were still to come.
Beebe chose as a diving spot an area 10 miles off Nonsuch, a tiny island off of the coast of Bermuda. In June 1930, the bathysphere, along with Beebe, Barton, and a team of 26 assistants was floated out on a huge barge. Connecting the bathysphere to the barge was a 3,500-foot steel cable, almost an inch thick. A solid rubber hose, carrying telephone wires and electricity for lights, provided those within the bathysphere their only contact with the outside world. Once inside the sphere, Beebe remarked upon the tight quarters it provided: "The longer we were in it, the smaller it seemed to get."

6. Ocean Planet:Ocean Planet Book - Beebe

Ocean Planet: Writings and Images of the Sea
A Dark and Luminous Blue
William Beebe - Half Mile Down, 1934
We have seen the Titanic lying in her grave more than 12,000 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic; we have seen the crabs and tube worms and other unlikely creatures that inhabit cracks in the sea floor far beyond the reach of light; we have even seen the Challenger Deep, the most remote of all the places on earth. Submersibles, robots, and video cameras have routinely given us access to the most exotic spots in the sea. But what was it like to be the first humans to venture into the deep? In 1934, William Beebe, a naturalist, and Otis Barton, an engineer, climbed into a crude steel ball called the bathysphere and descended half a mile into the unknown darkness off Bermuda. During the dives, Beebe communicated with his colleague, Miss Hollister, who was on the surface, via telephone. At 600 feet the color appeared to be a dark, luminous blue, and this contradiction of terms shows the difficulty of description. As in former dives, it seemed bright, but was so lacking in actual power that it was useless for reading and writing. . . . There are certain nodes of emotion in a descent such as this, the first of which is the initial flash. This came at 670 feet, and it seemed to close a door upon the upper world. Green, the world-wide color of plants, had long since disappeared from our new cosmos, just as the last plants of the sea themselves had been left behind far over head.

(1877 - 1962) is most famous for his world record descent in the Bathysphere with Otis Barton in 1934. Beebe also wrote popular books about his exploring experiences working with the New York Zoological Park (Bronx Zoo). Click here to listen to an audio recording in .wav format of William Beebe when he was a guest on an old time radio program - OTR - called "Information Please." People submitted questions to the guest panel members; Beebe was a frequent guest. In this clip he talks about the torpedo fish, stingray, etc. (Beebe in China with Junglefowl bird; his old high school in East Orange, New Jersey; Natural History Museum, NY) Will's first article was actually a letter to the editor of Harper's Young People magazine about his observations of the brown creeper. It was published in the January 15, 1895 issue. The Beebe family often rode the elevated train up to New York to the Museum. Will became very well known and liked among its staff. His whole life involved natural history - his parents were avid enthusiasts, his friends too, and almost every day Will was outdoors adding to his collections of birds eggs, fossils and skins. His ever increasing knowledge of natural history, his self-learned skill in taxidermy and enthusiasm led him to down a direct path as a naturalist. And to a friendship with the Museum's president, Henry Fairfield Osborn.

The Bathysphere Adventures On Wednesday, August 15, 1934 William Beebe and Otis Barton made themselves world famous by descending in their "Bathysphere" 3,028 feet beneath the ocean surface. William "Will" Beebe began exploring the undersea world with his homemade diving helmet April 9, 1925. He writes about those and other dives in The National Geographic Magazine ("A Wonderer Under Sea," Dec. 1932). He encouraged others to join him in the "Society of Wonders" in what he called the "Helmet Kingdom." This "realm of gorgeous life and color," he said, was the shallow area of the ocean near land between six and 60 feet deep. Beebe with his home made diving helmet. I believe the Arcturus is visible in the background.
William Beebe dreamed of exploring the deeper locations where he and his air hose tether could not reach. He said that based on "sketchy recollections" with Colonel Theodore Roosevelt , the idea for a spherical deep-sea vessel came from Roosevelt who drew a sketch on a napkin while the two chatted together about exploring the ocean depths.
