WILLIAM BECKFORD BECKFORD, WILLIAM Beckfords wealth and large expenditure, his position as a collector and patron of letters (he bought Gibbons library at Lausanne), his literary industry, and his reputation as author of Vathek, make him an interesting figure in literary history. He had a seat in parliament from 1784 to 1793, and again from 1806 to 1820. He left two daughters, the eldest of whom was married to the 10th duke of Hamilton. Encyclopedia Beckford, William Beckford, William, , English author. A wealthy dilettante, Beckford had a great desire to ascend to the nobility. Unfortunately his erratic and strange behavior often worked against his ambitions. About 1796 he built in Wiltshire an extravagant Gothic castle, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in mysterious seclusion and earned himself the reputation of an eccentric. Although not deeply interested in politics, he served in the House of Commons from 1784 to 1794 and from 1806 to 1820. Beckford is chiefly remembered today for the Gothic romance Vathek, a bizarre tale about the adventures of the shockingly cruel Caliph Vathek. The book was written in French but was first published (1786) in English translation. He was also the author of several books of travel and two burlesques on the sentimental novels of his day, The Elegant Enthusiast (1796) and Azemia See biography by P. Summers (1966). After receiving his education in England, he fell heir to large plantations in the West Indies, and, entering public life, became a member of parliament and alderman of London, and in 1762, and again in 1768, was elected lord mayor of London. With John Wilkes, he led the popular opposition, and on 23 May 1770, delivered a memorable remonstrance to the king, complaining of the falsification of election returns. He left estates worth £100,000 a year, and a million of money. His son was the author of "Vathek." William Beckford's Fonthill Now with the movie of Fonthill in streaming video Fonthill Abbey was built by the Gothic novelist and wealthy eccentric William Beckford in 1796; it was a huge building, with a central octagonal tower 280 feet high, and main doors 35 feet in height. It dominated the skyline, but most of the building collapsed in 1825. A few parts of the building remain in the park near Fonthill Gifford in Wiltshire, where the local pub is called the Beckford Arms. This attempt to recreate the building, using 3D modelling techniques, was a project undertaken by Mike Harrisson during his MSc course at the University of Huddersfield in 1997. The 3D Model was created using Graphisoft's ArchiCad program, a specialist Architectural CAD program. The two views are shown from the 3D Modeller during the creation of the model. When the model had been completed, a fly-through movie was created, with each frame photorendered from the model.
