Beagle' s greatest book of fiction - and his favorite - is "The Innkeeper's Song" published in 1993. And in a recent interview, Beagle described his most recent book, "Giant Bones" ( Roc, 1997, $9.95), as a collection of six novellas set in the general time and place found in "The Innkeeper's Song." To back up a little, Beagle, who also is a singer/songwriter, said "The Innkeeper's Song" started out as a song. The innkeeper in the song is shocked when three beautiful women show up at his inn one night. One is black, one is brown, and one is very white. They take over the place, drinking his wine and eating his bread and cheese, laughing, arguing and at some point in the evening calling for the stable boy. In the morning, they're gone. The only thing he's really sure of is that he's going to have to get a new stable boy. "And some years later I decided it would be nice to find out who they were...and that became the story 'The Innkeeper's Song,' which is set in a totally imaginary world," Beagle said.

Beagle wurde 1939 in New York geboren und wuchs in der Bronx auf. Schon als Kind war er ein eifriger Leser: "Ich war ein dicker Junge in der Bronx, ich las sehr viel, weil ich einsam war. Ich erfand immer Geschichten für mich selbst - meist von Tieren, die sprechen können." Eines Tages erzählte er Kindern aus der Nachbarschaft eine seiner Stories und wurde zum erstenmal von ihnen akzeptiert. Während seiner Schulzeit schrieb er für die literarische Zeitschrift seiner Schule, und als er in der 6. Klasse war, verkündete er vollmundig, er wolle Schriftsteller werden. 1955 nahm er an einem Poesiewettbewerb für Schüler teil: Der erste Preis ging an Peter S. Beagle - es war ein Stipendium für den Studiengang "Kreatives Schreiben" an der Universität Pittsburgh, wo er 1959 seinen Abschluß machte. Peter S. Beagle ... kein Ort ist so verzaubert wie der, an dem ein Einhorn geboren wurde. Es wird Zeit, ein wenig mehr von diesem Mann zu erzählen, der nun schon Generationen mit seiner Geschichte über "Das letzte Einhorn" in die Welt der Fabelwesen und Phantasie entführt hat. Den meisten unter uns wird er eben als dieser Mann bekannt sein, der "Das letzte Einhorn" geschrieben hat, aber Peter S. Beagle hat noch viele Talente. So schreibt er auch Kurzgeschichten, Drehbücher und ganz nebenbei als Songwriter. Aber bevor ich hier darauf eingehe, was er alles geleistet hat, will ich erst ein wenig zu seinem Leben erzählen. Kurzbiographie Bronx High School of Sience Jahrgang 1955 ein, denn es war ein Stipendium. Nach seinem Studium verbrachte Beagle ein Jahr in Übersee. Als er zurückkehrte, nahm er an einem Schreiberkurs der Stanford Universität teil, bei dem er seine erste Frau Enid kennenlernte. Nachdem der Kurs beendet war, verbrachte er einige Zeit an der Ostküste, bevor er mit Enid nach Californien zog. Nachdem er Enid geheiratet hatte, bekamen sie drei Kinder. Er verbrachte diese Zeit als freier Autor um seine Familie zu versorgen. Dieser Tätigkeit ging er selbst dann noch nach, als sein "Last Unicorn" erschienen war, das sich gut verkaufte. Washington und Clarion West Übrigens ist auf der Jahrgangsseite der Name von Peter S. Beagle mit einer Mailadresse verlinkt. Ob diese noch funktionsfähig ist, ist fraglich. Beagle selbst hat bei einem Interview einmal geäußert, er habe keine Mailadresse, stände dafür aber im Telefonbuch von Davis. Er selbst bevorzuge die "Schneckenmail" oder bekomme gerne auch mal eine Brieftaube zur Abwechslung.
