Baum, L. Frank Biography
Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) American journalist and writer, whose best-known book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Baum's stories about the imaginary Land of Oz belong to the classics of fantasy literature. The Oz series was long shunned by librarians, and neglected by scholars of children's literature. Baum has often been compared to Lewis Carroll - they both had a girl as the protagonist in their most famous works. "Yet the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as 'historical' in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer 'wonder tales' in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf, and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curling incident devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident." (Baum in the introduction to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Lyman Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York. His father was the oil magnate Benjamin Ward Baum and mother Cynthia (Stanton) Baum, a women's rights activist. Baum grew up with his seven brothers and sisters on a large estate just north of Syracuse. "The cool but sun-kissed mansion... was built in a quaint yet pretty fashion, with many wings and gables and broad verandas on every side," Baum later wrote in DOT AND TOT IN FAIRYLAND (1901). The house, although it was large, did not have running water.

"TO PLEASE A CHILD"
L. Frank Baum and the Land of Oz
I n an inscription in an earlier children's book that he gave his sister, L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) noted : " I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-the-wisp, which when caught, is not worth the possession; but to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward." With The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum won the fame that had eluded him in his early careers. By the time he died in 1919, Baum had written thirteen other books set in Oz. T he books were so well loved that Baum's publishers continued the series with other authors to extend the Oz canon to forty books. Although the story seems quintessentially American, the Oz books have become popular world-wide, and the Wizard has been translated into most major languages.

Father Goose, His Book by L. Frank Baum [Editor's note: Some of these poems depict ethnic stereotypes of African-Americans, Chinese, Irish-Americans, Indigenous Americans, and Indians. Proceed with caution!] Introduction. THERE is a fascination in the combination of jingling verse and bright pictures that always appeals strongly to children. The ancient "Mother Goose Book" had these qualities, and for nearly two centuries the cadences of its rhymes have lingered in the memories of men and women who learned them in childhood. The author and illustrator of "Father Goose" have had no intent to imitate or parody the famous verse and pictures of "Mother Goose." They own to having followed, in modern fashion, the plan of the book that pleased children ages agoand still pleases them. These are newer jingles and pictures for children of to-day, and intended solely to supplement the nursery rhymes of our ancestors. Father Goose Old Mother Goose became quite new,

L. Frank Baum
Lyman Frank Baum May 15 May 6 ) was an Americann author Born in Chittenango, New York , he was the son of Benjamin Baum, who made his fortunes in the oil fields of Pennsylvania . He tried journalism in his youth which included starting a number of newspapers and magazines as well as writing plays for theater. After he got married and had a son, he moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where he started a local newspaper called The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer . The newspaper eventually failed. Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and thirteen additional novels based on the places and people of Oz . Several times through the development of the series, he declared that he had written his last Oz book, and devoted himself to several other works of fantasy fiction based in other magical lands (including The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus ). However, persuaded by popular demand, letters from children, (and perhaps a reluctant understanding of the power of branding ), he each time returned to the series. All of his novels have fallen into

Oz
This article is about the fictional place, for other meanings see Oz (disambiguation) Oz is an imaginary country first introduced in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by L. Frank Baum . Baum wrote fourteen children's books about Oz and its odd inhabitants. After his death Ruth Plumly Thompson continued the series. Oz is a squarish shaped place, surrounded on all sides by a Deadly Desert and divided into four quadrants: the Gillikin country in the north, the Munchkin country in the east, the Quadling country in the south and the Winkie country in the west. The Emerald City sits at the center of Oz. Princess Ozma rules the country as a benevolent dictator Recurring characters in the series include:
  • Dorothy Gale , a girl from Kansas The Tin Woodman (Nick Chopper), an enchanted mechanical man and Emperor of the Winkies The Scarecrow , a living man made of straw and King of the Emerald City The Wizard , the former ruler of Oz, originally Oscar Diggs from Ohio and now a skilled wizard The Cowardly Lion , the King of Beasts Jack Pumpkinhead , a man made out of twigs Tik Tok , a super-intelligent robot The Patchwork Girl , a living doll The Shaggy Man , another human from "the real world" The Nome King , the sinister ruler of an underground empire Glinda , a "good witch" and the benevolent ruler of the Gillikins
An interesting side note was the fact, stated in

a critical list with discussions
Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by L. Frank Baum
This is a brief discussion of L. Frank Baum and, of course, of some books by L. Frank Baum.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Baum; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Baum tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Baum worthy; in sum, to help you rank Baum (and the works by Baum listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.
